One of our Australian forum members, TrAJik let us know that his iPhone alarm failed to wake him up this morning, January 1, 2011 (Australia time) and doing a quick look around the web it seems like he is not alone.
The iPhone had trouble with repeating alarms back during the change to Standard Time so this could be the same bug rearing its ugly head again.
UPDATE: According to comments below, this affects **ONE TIME ALARMS* rather than recurring ones, so the opposite fix should work:

A steady stream of purported iPad 2 cases continues to flow out of Asia. Similar to earlier leaks, this latest case to hit the rumor mill suggests the iPad 2 will have a rear-facing camera and a slimmer, possibly more angular design than the first generation iPad. This aesthetic change may be akin to the overhaul made to the iPod touch. BMW releases two apps for iOS
BMW has released two apps for iOS this week. The first one, based on the Mini brand, is called Mini Connected, and allows you to not only track information about your car, but also access web radio and audio version of Internet feeds, hooked up directly to your car's stereo. And on cars equipped with navigation features, you can even send directions and searches back and forth from your iPhone to the car's systems, and vice-versa.

eBay listed its "Top Shopped" items of 2010 this week and the iPhone 4 rose to the top, beating out classic toys like Barbie and Hot Wheels. iPhone bugs: Blank messages in Mail
If you go to check your email in the iPhone’s Mail app only to see a blank — either literally a blank space between messages or a place-holder that says (No Sender) (No Subject) — you may have this bug. If you do we’ll tell you how to work around it, after the break.

Samsung to show off Galaxy Player iPod touch competitor at CES
Looks like Samsung, makers of the iPhone-like Galaxy S phone series and iPad-like Galaxy Tab tablet series, will be adding the iPod touch-like Galaxy Player to its North American lineup post-CES:

App Review: Parcours.robo is like RoboRally... if you don't like RoboRally
Parcours.robo really, really wants to be RoboRally, the well-received 1994 board game from Magic: The Gathering designer Richard Garfield. A look inside the Foxconn factory
French journalist and photographer Jordan Pouille revisited a Foxconn factory in Longhua, China and reported on factory conditions in the wake of a highly publicized pay raise for its Chinese workers. I have to say, I really like the Yelp app on my iPhone. Of course, I'm in LA where there are plenty of full listings for all kinds of things; I can see how Yelp might not be quite as useful in a less populated area. But when I need to find a new restaurant or where a certain retail place is, I've found myself pulling out Yelp as a location app even more often than the iPhone's built-in Maps application. iOS to support Cherokee language
The Associate Press reports that Apple is working to incorporate Cherokee language support into iOS. Cherokee tribal officials have been begun to worry about the demise of the Cherokee language as the tribe ages and its younger members increasingly use the English language -- and iPhones. However, instead of seeing technology as a threat, three years ago Cherokee tribal leaders opened talks with Apple to include native support for the Cherokee language in iOS.

iPad 2 rumored to have flatter backside, smaller bezel, 'wide-range' speaker
According to Japanese Mac blog MacOtakara, the next-gen iPad will have a flatter backside and smaller bezel compared to the original iPad. The "iPad 2" will also have a larger "wide-ranged speaker" located behind a mesh speaker grille.

Apple Stores merry with FaceTime Santa displays
Adding to the endless Beatles loops and festive iPad snow globes, Apple Stores now have their very own FaceTime Santa in the windows, spreading Christmas cheer to boys, girls, families, elves, and Mrs. Clause alike.

Apple today released version 3.2 of their iPhone Configuration Utility for Mac OS X. If you’re familiar with the utility you likely already know what it does, but for anyone curious:

Visa releases iPhone app with discounts, merchant directory
TechCrunch reports that payment processor Visa has released an iPhone app in the US* that gives shoppers access to some 50 merchants. Visa's new app comes with two services you can use, Offers and Locator.
Offers: Receive merchant discounts and special offers directly on your iPhone. The offers are stored on your iPhone and can be redeemed at physical retail locations, online, or by telephone. You can select your preferences for the types of offers that are sent to your iPhone.

Five men rob Apple Store in Greenwich, CT
Apple Store burglars have struck again, this time in Greenwich, Connecticut. Police say that at least five suspects, seen in the surveillance photo to the right, broke through the front door and helped themselves to a whole bunch of Apple products valued in the tens of thousands of dollars. The store obviously had security cameras in place to record the break-in when it happened, but I wonder if any employees also got to watch the robbery in real-time like this guy who watched on his iPhone as

Over the last couple days we’ve received tons of tips about Verizon adding Apple iOS to their Shop for Smartphones menu (see above). No doubt fueled by recent rumors, the assumption is that it’s a harbinger of the near-legendary Verizon iPhone.

First iAd for iPad features Tron Legacy
The first iPad iAd has been released today and it's for Disney's upcoming film Tron Legacy. The iAd features video from the Tron movie, which leads to an interactive menu. The menu itself is designed to look like a light disc and allows the viewer to navigate to a photo gallery, movie trailer, theater finder, email notifier, story synopsis, and a preview of the movie soundtrack.
An Apple spokesperson told AdAge that the Tron Legacy iAd will be the only iAd to appear on the iPad this year.

Play with your brain: 3 Degrees of Wikipedia
I've been a trivia buff forever, and it seems like my brain has an endless capacity for relatively useless information while it has difficulty remembering important things -- like my name, for instance. With over 3,500,000 articles in the English version of Wikipedia, there's plenty of fodder for gathering information, whether it's real knowledge or just fun trivia.

Analyst report: Why Verizon wants to sell the iPhone
Let's say straight out, this is just the opinion of one analyst, and the opinion is based on sales data assumptions that might or might not be accurate. Still, it's an interesting report, and it might help explain why Verizon, which originally rejected the iPhone, wants it back.

Toshiba Corp is said to be building a large factory in Ishikawa Japan to supply Apple with LCD panels for their popular iPhone, according to Reuters:

Snapstick could use your iPhone to program your television

With the Mac App Store set to launch in January 2011, software developers are excited about the prospect of the success of Apple's mobile App Store crossing over to the desktop market. We've received a blitz of emails from TUAW readers who have been pulling their hair out about an issue that appeared after they upgraded their iPads to iOS 4.2.1.
As described by lots of users in the Apple support forums, Wi-Fi connectivity slowed dramatically after the upgrade. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the slowdown, as it is affecting new and older iPads, people using Apple or third-party Wi-Fi routers, and a number of other variables.

When Apple announced that printing from iOS devices would become reality with the release of iOS 4.2 and AirPrint, a lot of us at TUAW were very excited. This would make iPads and iPhones even more useful. I kept thinking that the ability to tap on my iPhone screen and make a print of a photo would be very cool. Well, the reality of AirPrint is that printing without third-party software running on your Mac or PC is only available on eleven HP printers that are referred to as supporting ePrint.

Danish newspaper protests App Store censorship
According to The Mac Observer, Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet isn't too happy with Apple's App Store policies regarding nudity. In a series of recently published editorials, the newspaper takes issue with Apple banning the Ekstra Bladet iPhone and iPad app because of their Page 9 Girl, a nude photograph of a woman they have been publishing for 34 years. Swarm Light is an $180k LED chandelier controlled by an iPhone
This thing you see in the video on the next page (and in the picture above) is called the "Swarm Light." It's a series of little LEDs hung in sequence along three clusters of grids, lit up in order by a computer to display simulated collective movement, like a swarm of bees. It's very interesting, both as a display for a programmed algorithm, and just as an art project. All together, the display costs $ 180,000 -- no small chunk of change.

Neil Young and his company Ngmoco are running out of time to get all twenty new freemium products out that were promised earlier this year, but it looks like they're going to make a run at it anyway. Over the past weekend, Ngmoco released two brand new freemium titles on the US App Store. Well, now Consumer Reports has released the results of a satisfaction survey which shows that according to over 50,000 of their readers, AT&T is the lowest-scoring cell-phone carrier in the United States. Perhaps the only department at Apple that works longer hours than engineering these days is legal. The most recent legal dust-up in Cupertino has just expanded, as Apple has amended a patent lawsuit against Motorola to include 12 more claims. It’s been 2 weeks since Apple released iOS 4 (technically iOS 4.2.1) for iPad — almost 5 months after iOS 4 for iPhone and 7 months since iPad was first released with iOS 3.2 — and one of the more extreme criticisms hurtled its way is “why didn’t iPad ship with iOS 4 to begin with?!”

It appears some new promo material going up in Apple stores has a subtle footnote stating the white iPhone 4 will be available Spring 2011. Not huge news, as Apple stated spring availability for iPhone 4 a while back, but seeing it in black and white makes it a bit more believable, considering the amount of push backs we’ve already seen.

We recently looked at GateGuru, a handy tool to help you navigate around airports. Now I want to point out another good free travel tool, Point Inside, which combines mall maps and info on nearby stores. A new update also allows you to create a wish list. Select a store, and scan an item that you want on your list. The item will be added, and you can share your list on Facebook.
The app produces nice airport maps with lists of stores, ATMs, location of baggage carousels, and parking locations.

Radio Shack is offering $ 50 in savings on the purchase of a new iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS at their retail locations (i.e. offline only) until December 11. Better yet, if you have a good condition iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G you want to trade in, they’ll give you another $ 75 or $ 125 off respectively. Darren Murph of Engadget does the math on that:

iOS 4.2 bugs: iPad Camera Kit no longer supports as many USB devices?
Since the iPad doesn’t have a USB port or SSD card slot (can I say “grrrr!’ again?) Apple sells a Camera Kit that’s supposed to let you plug in your camera or card and transfer your pictures and video — but also used to work for low power USB keyboards and Skype/VoIP headsets. I say “used to” because with iOS 4.2 that no longer seems to be the case.

Engadget continues to rake in scoop after scoop on the “PlayStation Phone”, which I deliberately place in quotes because it looks like what should be the PSPhone, the next technological marvel from the company that once brought us Walkman, is actually… an Android app.

Norwegian Apple reseller suffers break-in, 50 boxes stolen
An Apple reseller in Norway, of all places, suffered a break-in earlier this morning. According to the main local paper, Aftenposten, the thieves stole a BMW, which was then used to back into the store as seen in the wild pictures above. Once the storefront was broken open, 50 boxes were lifted from the property. While the stolen property was not identified, odds are that there were at least a few iPads in there, given that the device was just released in that country.

Golden Axe gets Bluetooth multiplayer, EA titles on sale
Sega sent us a note that Golden Axe for the iPhone has been updated -- the game now offers co-op over Bluetooth, so you and a friend can grab a weapon and get to killing goblins and ogres. And I think the game has finally gotten down to a US 99 cent usual price rather than a special sale, but a buck (or two bucks as the case may be, for two players) is cheap for a few good co-op games of Golden Axe.

Following up on the announcement made a few weeks ago, UK telecom providers Three, Orange and T-Mobile formally launched their iPad subsidies today. Those of us in the United States are used to having our cellphone prices subsidized by signing contracts, but so far we don't have anyone subsidizing our iPad purchases as well. Pocket Frogs hits 3 million downloads, 350k daily active users
NimbleBit developer Ian Marsh tweeted a link to a promotional infographic about popular app Pocket Frogs yesterday, and the title has apparently reached a whopping three million downloads in just ten weeks on the App Store. Daily active users have peaked at 350,000, which is a pretty sizable number for an app of this scale (you can also see on the graphic that it's been developed by a team of 2, and less than $ 500 has been spent on marketing the app).
