iPhone bugs: Alarms not working in 2011?

One of our Australian forum members, TrAJik let us know that his iPhone alarm failed to wake him up this morning, January 1, 2011 (Australia time) and doing a quick look around the web it seems like he is not alone.
The iPhone had trouble with repeating alarms back during the change to Standard Time so this could be the same bug rearing its ugly head again.
UPDATE: According to comments below, this affects **ONE TIME ALARMS* rather than recurring ones, so the opposite fix should work:

2010 in review: Rise of iOS

Here, in no particular order, are some of the top stories we saw in 2010. The year was packed with Apple announcements, some planned and one unplanned. The real standout this year was iOS coming into its own. This year's WWDC was all about iOS, for example. The Apple TV now runs iOS. iOS 4.2 breathed new life into the already-new iPad, another major story of the year (a wildly successful one at that).

Even OS X 10.7 "Lion" has some iOS-inspired elements from what little we've seen. But it's

Ten ways I'll use Apple products to have more fun in 2011

With just a few hours to go in 2010, I'm thinking about 2011 already. This year, I'm not really making any resolutions, since they are made to be broken. Instead, I've written a list of things that I can do using my Apple products to make my life even more enjoyable than it already is. When you get to be my age (over a half-century old), you want to "grab for all the gusto you can get." Since I'm never away from an Apple product (well, almost never -- I don't use my iPhone in the shower), I

MacBook Pro appears on Amazon's 2010 bestseller list

The iPhone and the iPad both made eBay's "top-shopped" list for the year, but neither of those devices are sold on Amazon, so they weren't to be found on the big online retailer's annual list of bestselling items. The Kindle was, of course -- it's Amazon's own e-reader, and it was both the bestselling and most wished-for item on the site in the Electronics category.

But while Apple's iOS devices didn't make the list, there was one major Apple item that did. In the Computers category, the

Top 10 iPhone and iPad stories of 2010

Top 10 iPhone and iPad stories of 2010 is a headline about headlines that should come with a spoiler warning. The iPhone in 2010 wasn’t just topping headlines for color defects and faulty phone connections. Apple’s smartphone also had a seedy underbelly over the past 12 months, filled with robberies, muggings, murder, and assault. Numerous criminals tried to get away with iPhone-related schemes this year, but were often foiled thanks to the handset’s capabilities, such as GPS, Wi-Fi, and video

Rumored iPad 2 case pictures leaking out of Asia

A steady stream of purported iPad 2 cases continues to flow out of Asia. Similar to earlier leaks, this latest case to hit the rumor mill suggests the iPad 2 will have a rear-facing camera and a slimmer, possibly more angular design than the first generation iPad. This aesthetic change may be akin to the overhaul made to the iPod touch. The latest generation iPod touch dropped the rounded feel of its predecessors and replaced it with a thinner, sharp-edged design.

Angry Birds creators: Apple still does mobile apps best

He says that Android's issue isn't so much about device fragmentation as it is "ecosystem fragmentation" -- by spreading itself out so much, Google's smartphone OS has "so many different shops, so

Are tethered Jailbreaks worth the hassle?

Right now iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads running iOS 4.2.1 can only be Jailbroken via the “tethered” method which means they need to be plugged into your Windows or Mac PC and rebooted via a program, redsn0w. Not just to Jailbreak them, mind you, but anytime you need to reboot your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. Forget whether you should Jailbreak or not, tethered Jailbreaks require so many extra steps, do the benefits still make up for the hassle?

Princeton and iOS DHCP still not getting along

It seems that every time Apple squashes one DHCP bug in iOS, another one pops up.
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a system of automatically assigning IP addresses on a network, which mostly happens behind the scenes and without users noticing anything about it. Without an IP address, a device such as an iPhone, iPad, or any sort of computer cannot access the network.
DHCP uses a "lease" system where a computer can use a specific IP address for a certain length of time. In contrast

The difficulty comes from the fact that simply dialing someone's extension immediately after the main line number will not work. The internal phone system of the company you are calling will not recognize the extension

While this tweak is activated you can also interact with your icons by grabbing them and throwing them against each other. You even have the option of being able to

Alleged Steve Jobs email: MobileMe to get a lot better

MacRumors is reporting on an email, which it believes to be authentic, that one of its readers received from Steve Jobs. The reader sent the email to Jobs after the frustrations over his MobileMe experiences mounted. The reader told Jobs that while he's a huge fan of Apple and "wants to stay inside the Apple ecosystem," MobileMe is making it hard to do so.
The reader goes on to tell Jobs that MobileMe is almost "unusable" and cites "unreliable/unpredictable syncing" and "creating duplicate

Smartphones and tablets to eclipse PC sales in 18 months?

IDC analysts have estimated that smartphone and tablet sales will soon surpass worldwide PC sales with help of the Apple iPhone and iPad.

18 months from now, combined smartphone and tablet sales will eclipse the PC, it claims, with both categories hovering in the mid-400 million range. [...] overall it represents a shift from the open-ended, flexible, and powerful PC to the narrow, task-specific, app-driven nature of the iOS and Android kind.

Carcassone app going universal, gets higher price to match

Carcassone, the iOS version of the European board game, has quickly become an App Store favorite after its release, and now iPad owners can get in on the fun. The app is going universal, so it will not only run on both devices natively, but have a completely enhanced UI for the bigger machine, letting you explore all of the colorful roads and meeples in full scale.

Because the app will now work on both devices, the price is being raised, from $ 4.99 to $ 9.99. But as I understand it, if

Swarm Light is an $180k LED chandelier controlled by an iPhone

This thing you see in the video on the next page (and in the picture above) is called the "Swarm Light." It's a series of little LEDs hung in sequence along three clusters of grids, lit up in order by a computer to display simulated collective movement, like a swarm of bees. It's very interesting, both as a display for a programmed algorithm, and just as an art project. All together, the display costs $ 180,000 -- no small chunk of change.

If you do watch the video, you can see that the

Two new titles released by Ngmoco, Adventure Bay and Star Wars Imperial Academy

Neil Young and his company Ngmoco are running out of time to get all twenty new freemium products out that were promised earlier this year, but it looks like they're going to make a run at it anyway. Over the past weekend, Ngmoco released two brand new freemium titles on the US App Store. First up is Star Wars Imperial Academy, a first-person shooter Star Wars game developed with THQ that basically plays like a Star Wars-themed skin of Eliminate. Unfortunately, iTunes reviews on this one

Apple Stores now selling iPad gift cards

Apple has begun selling their signature silver gift cards inside "iPad Gift Card" packaging just in time for the holiday rush. iLounge says that although the cards themselves aren't anything different than the ones I normally get from family as Christmas gifts, they can now be used to purchase an iPad. When I bought my current iPhone I tried to use gift cards and wasn't allowed to do so -- Apple mandated that customers had to use a debit or a credit card -- but I guess this is a change in

Google Nexus S once again shows how to counter-program iPhone

Google has just announced the Nexus S, a pure Android 2.3 Gingerbread-powered, Samsung manufactured smartphone aiming to take the Nexus One into generation two and set the standard for a legion of subsequent devices in 2011. Our sibling site, Android Central has got your full Nexus S and Gingerbread coverage, and they’re even giving away a free Nexus S in their Android Forums, so go check that out. What interests me, however, is that like the Nexus One, Nexus S shows that Google is one

AT&T rated worst cellphone provider by Consumer Reports

Remember when Consumer Reports couldn't recommend the iPhone 4? Well, now Consumer Reports has released the results of a satisfaction survey which shows that according to over 50,000 of their readers, AT&T is the lowest-scoring cell-phone carrier in the United States. In fact, AT&T scored a "Worse" rating (a full-black dot for those in the know) in every single category of the survey save for texting. In that category they received a half-black dot ranking, or one lowly step above

TUAW's Daily App: HEXETERA

Here's the deal: based on that screenshot at right, you already want to play this one or you don't. You can probably guess what it is just from that. It's a falling block game, except you match triangular tiles rather than blocks. There are goals you need to meet in order to progress through the levels (or there's an unlimited mode for constant play, as long as you can manage). And there are various power-ups to pick up and carry out as you go through the game. It's pretty straightforward.

Apple expands lawsuit against Motorola

Perhaps the only department at Apple that works longer hours than engineering these days is legal. The most recent legal dust-up in Cupertino has just expanded, as Apple has amended a patent lawsuit against Motorola to include 12 more claims. This particular fracas began in October when Motorola sued Apple, claiming infringement of 18 patents relating to hardware and services.

Apple subsequently counter-sued, claiming that Motorola's Android phones infringed on a number of Apple patents,

Why iPad didn’t ship with iOS 4

It’s been 2 weeks since Apple released iOS 4 (technically iOS 4.2.1) for iPad — almost 5 months after iOS 4 for iPhone and 7 months since iPad was first released with iOS 3.2 — and one of the more extreme criticisms hurtled its way is “why didn’t iPad ship with iOS 4 to begin with?!”

Short answer: because the iPad hardware was ready and iOS 4 wasn’t.

Long answer: keep reading after the break. (You’ve been warned).

New Apple signage confirms White iPhone 4 still slated for Spring 2011

It appears some new promo material going up in Apple stores has a subtle footnote stating the white iPhone 4 will be available Spring 2011. Not huge news, as Apple stated spring availability for iPhone 4 a while back, but seeing it in black and white makes it a bit more believable, considering the amount of push backs we’ve already seen.

Given the 5th iPhone revision will be right around the corner by that point, I don’t see many people jumping for joy. I’m hoping

Point Inside is another worthwhile holiday shopping and travel tool

We recently looked at GateGuru, a handy tool to help you navigate around airports. Now I want to point out another good free travel tool, Point Inside, which combines mall maps and info on nearby stores. A new update also allows you to create a wish list. Select a store, and scan an item that you want on your list. The item will be added, and you can share your list on Facebook.
The app produces nice airport maps with lists of stores, ATMs, location of baggage carousels, and parking locations.

Better yet, if you have a good condition iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G you want to trade in, they’ll give you another $ 75 or $ 125 off respectively. Darren Murph of Engadget does the math on that:

you could walk in today, hand over your 3GS, and walk out with an iPhone 4 for $ 25 (plus activation fees)

iOS 4.2 bugs: iPad Camera Kit no longer supports as many USB devices?

Since the iPad doesn’t have a USB port or SSD card slot (can I say “grrrr!’ again?) I say “used to” because with iOS 4.2 that no longer seems to be the case.

Norwegian Apple reseller suffers break-in, 50 boxes stolen

An Apple reseller in Norway, of all places, suffered a break-in earlier this morning. According to the main local paper, Aftenposten, the thieves stole a BMW, which was then used to back into the store as seen in the wild pictures above. Once the storefront was broken open, 50 boxes were lifted from the property. While the stolen property was not identified, odds are that there were at least a few iPads in there, given that the device was just released in that country.

Golden Axe gets Bluetooth multiplayer, EA titles on sale

Sega sent us a note that Golden Axe for the iPhone has been updated -- the game now offers co-op over Bluetooth, so you and a friend can grab a weapon and get to killing goblins and ogres. And I think the game has finally gotten down to a US 99 cent usual price rather than a special sale, but a buck (or two bucks as the case may be, for two players) is cheap for a few good co-op games of Golden Axe.

Additionally, EA has dropped prices on a few of its App Store titles, including Reckless

iFlash adds a flash to your iPhone or iPod touch

Of course, it kind of takes away from the idea that a mobile phone should be sleek and easy to carry, but I'm guessing that is beside the point. The iFlash is a self-powered flash module that plugs directly into the docking port of your iPhone 3G/3GS or iPod touch and allows owners to take pictures in badly lit areas. It will also work with your iPhone 4 but there's not a lot of point in having two flashes, especially since the extra one hangs off your otherwise thin and lightweight iPhone. As

NimbleBit developer Ian Marsh tweeted a link to a promotional infographic about popular app Pocket Frogs yesterday, and the title has apparently reached a whopping three million downloads in just ten weeks on the App Store. Daily active users have peaked at 350,000, which is a pretty sizable number for an app of this scale (you can also see on the graphic that it's been developed by a team of 2, and less than $ 500 has been spent on marketing the app).
