How Far Samsung"s Galaxy S Phones Have Come, in One GIF

- gizmodo.com

How Far Samsung

The evolution of any smartphone is a long, drawn-out process. But when you cram it all down into a four-second GIF, the results are pretty mesmerizing.

This GIF, created by GadgetLove, shows the Samsung Galaxy S circa 2010 to 2015. Of course, it"s fun to see the physical size of any phone slowly extend to the 5+ inch monstrosities we have today (remember when phones were small? lol) But watching a Galaxy phone grow is much more exciting than say, an iPhone. For one, I love seeing the oblong hardware button be knicked and tucked ever-so-slightly through the years and just the evolution of TouchWiz is pretty fun, too.

But my favorite little detail is during the transition from the Galaxy S3 to the Galaxy S4. If you look at the "Internet" icon, South America shifts ever so slightly to the left. Why? Why did they feel the need to fix that one teeny, tiny detail? Was there some huge meeting discussing the change or did some developer fuck up and just not care? Makes you think about all the detailed work and quirks that go into every new smartphone design that you don"t even know. [GadgetLove (hi-res)]

Wired video abuses ultra-protective iPhone cases, two withstand slams, one even survives falling safe

- 9to5mac.com

Most cases will protect your iPhone during regular use, and many can handle accidental drops and a little abuse, but very few can withstand deliberate punishment. An amusing new Battle Damage video from Wired uses abusive tests to crown the “toughest iPhone case ever” from four different ultra-protective models: Griffin’s $50 Survivor, LifeProof’s $80 Fre, Lunatik’s $125 Taktik Extreme, and Otterbox’s $50 Defender. The iPhone 5 units inside the Griffin Survivor and LifeProof Fre don’t make it through the first test, a hard smash of the encased iPhone on a hard floor, but Lunatik’s Extreme and Otterbox’s Defender go onto a second test: attempting to withstand a 50-pound safe while standing in a completely vertical position.

Unless you’re planning to drop a safe on your upright iPhone, the smaller and more affordable Defender seems like a smarter choice. But only Lunatik’s metal-reinforced Extreme survived the safe-dropping test; an iPhone 6 version hasn’t yet been released. Most people will do just fine with regular iPhone cases (or great iPhone battery cases), but if you want something that can protect against Looney Tunes-like antics, check out the video for some nice camera work and screen-shattering fun.Filed under: iOS Devices Tagged: accidental damage, battery cases, battle damage, Damage, Griffin, iPhone, iPhone 5, iPhone 6, LifeProof, lunatik, OtterBox, Protective cases Check out 9to5Mac for more breaking coverage of iOS Devices, iPhone, and iPhone 6.What do you think? AAA road safety campaign shows real videos of teenage car crashes while using smartphones

- 9to5mac.com

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has put online video clips from real car crashes caused by 16-19 year old drivers using smartphones while driving. The videos, which show both the view through the windscreen and a view of the driver, are designed to make real the dangers of distracted driving.

None of the crashes featured in the above clip feature injuries, but almost 3,000 people a year are killed in crashes involving drivers in this age-range, the majority of them caused by the driver being “inattentive or engaged in some other non-driving-related activity.” A further 383,000 people a year are injured.

Researchers at the University of Iowa examined carcam footage from 1,691 crashes involving drivers aged 16-19 to determine the cause. Distracted driving was found to be the cause in 58% of crashes, with 12% of them due to using a phone while driving. For crashes involving the car leaving the road, a full third of crashes were attributed to cellphone use.

UK tests conducted earlier this month suggested that smartwatches are even worse than smartphones for driver distraction.

Instagram’s new Layout app automatically generates photo collages

Instagram today released a new app called Layout that lets users easily stitch together multiple photos by automatically generating layouts to make a collage of sorts.

When you open Layout, we automatically show you previews of custom layouts as you choose photos from your camera roll. To make it easier to find the photos you want, we’ve also added a Faces option that shows you all the photos in your camera roll that feature people.

While the app will suggest custom layouts for your photo collage, you can also customize the photos with editing controls for layout, sizing, flipping, and rotation.

Instagram also highlighted a feature of the app called ‘photo booth’ that will countdown and snap multiple photos that are automatically stitched together into a collage.

This is how you’ll control iPhone music playback with Android Wear

- cultofmac.com

This is how you’ll control iPhone music playback with Android Wear

Google’s official Android Wear app for iOS could be right around the corner if you believe the reports, but one developer has been proving that the two platforms can already be forced to play nicely together without any jailbreaking.

We’ve seen Wear receiving iPhone notifications and taking calls, and in the latest video from Mohammad Abu-Gabreyyeh, we see that watches like the Moto 360 and the LG G Watch R are capable of controlling music playback, too.

Abu-Gabreyyeh, the creator of popular tweaks for both Android and iOS, including the Xposed framework, has been working on making Android Wear compatible with iPhone for a number of weeks.

As you might expect, that’s not an easy feat given that the two aren’t supposed to work together — at least not yet — but thanks to Abu-Gabreyyeh’s custom APK, Wear watches can be made to interact with iOS in much the same way a device like the Pebble does.

It’s still a work in progress for now, which is why Abu-Gabreyyeh isn’t yet making the APK available to the public, but while we’re waiting, here’s another clip that demonstrates Wear controlling music — including volume — on an iPhone.

[embedded content]

Abu-Gabreyyeh has promised to make his APK available at some point, but recent reports have promised that Google is working on an official Wear app for iOS that could be launched at its Google I/O conference in May.

The Most Obscenely Expensive Apps for iOS

If you thought $10 was highway robbery when it comes to apps, this colorful infographic should help put things in perspective.

It"s arguable that a few of the apps listed here are worth their eye-popping price tag—Harrison"s Principles, for instance, is basically a medical textbook for doctors, while IDIA is the veterinarian"s counterpart. But others, like Water Globe, which is literally a $200 set of digital snow globes, will leave you seriously wondering what the human race has come to.

And then you"ve got your reeeally egregious cases like app.Cash, the $1,000 virtual cash register for iPhone. Yes, your money will be safe with this register"s app developer, and once you pair it with your 10 thousand dollar Apple Watch, you won"t be needing to make any additional deposits for a long time.

Review: Elgato’s Game Capture HD60 livestreams your iPad, iPhone, and console games at 1080p/60fps

- 9to5mac.com

Over the past decade, video gaming became social, as voice chat, multi-player matchmaking, and live game streaming enabled gamers to share their experiences with friends and strangers online. Streaming game video was the hardest, requiring so much horsepower that consoles needed computer assistance. Elgato entered the market in 2012 with Game Capture HD, which was designed to record directly from the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Now there’s a more powerful version called Game Capture HD60 ($180), which offers professional-quality full 1080p HD recording support at 60 frames per second, plus one-touch live streaming to uStream, Twitch, and YouTube. It works with iPads, iPhones and iPod touches using Apple’s Lightning to Digital AV Adapter, and Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U and PlayStation 4 game consoles with nothing more than an HDMI cable.

Elgato has years of experience making cutting-edge video recorders: back when Macs weren’t nearly as powerful as they are today, its EyeTV DVRs could record live TV while streaming video to iOS devices. Similarly, Game Capture HD60 lets you simultaneously enjoy lag-free gaming, stream live video to the Internet, and optionally include voice commentary with automatic audio level balancing. It also does all of these things with barely any need for user involvement. And although the price was just a little too high when it debuted last year, it’s now hovering around $150 — a great price given the quality of its video output. Read on for all the details…

Review: TaoTronics’ Bluetooth 4 Car Kit for iPhone adds low-cost speakerphone, music to older cars

- 9to5mac.com

Up until recently, no one complained about the way iPhones sounded through my cars’ Bluetooth speakerphones, but after switching to an iPhone 6 Plus and a Toyota Prius, friends and family told me that ambient noise has been increasing to distracting levels during our phone calls. If it wasn’t for those complaints, I would never have thought to test an alternative such as TaoTronics’ TT-BR03 Bluetooth 4.0 Hands-Free Car Kit ($30, currently $25 on Amazon). Most cars these days include Bluetooth speakerphone and music streaming support, but this inexpensive accessory is here for cars that don’t — and for cars exhibiting weird audio-related bugs with iPhones. Judging from its 4.8/5-Star Amazon reviews across over 130 customers, plenty of people still need solutions like this for one of these reasons.

TT-BR03 combines a wired noise-cancelling microphone and three-button remote control with a car charger, using Bluetooth 4.0 and a 3.5mm audio plug to route your iPhone’s audio into a car’s speakers. If your car doesn’t have a 3.5mm aux-in port, you’re out of luck, because TT-BR03 doesn’t have a built-in speaker. But if you do have an aux port, it provides a very competent speakerphone and music streaming experience at a very low price.

Apple Pay continues its PGA Tour with MasterCard at the Arnold Palmer Invitational golf event

- 9to5mac.com

Apple Pay partner MasterCard used the PGA Tour kickoff in Phoenix earlier this year to promote Apple’s mobile payment service, and today MasterCard announced that Apple Pay will be accepted at the upcoming Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Florida. MasterCard says that almost all vendors at the golf event will accept Apple Pay and other contactless payment options for paying for merchandise and concessions.

MasterCard and the PGA TOUR debuted contactless payment acceptance at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in January, allowing spectators to use mobile payments platforms like Apple Pay for the first time at a TOUR event. At API, merchandise and concession terminals will be contactless enabled, allowing golf fans to make payments using Apple Pay and other NFC-enabled devices and services.

Vendors accepting Apple Pay won’t be exclusive to MasterCard card holders, of course, as the payment service supports Visa and American Express as well, and attendees can also take advantage of the Qkr! with MasterPass app to make donations from their smartphone to the Arnold Palmer Medical Center Foundation from any card.

The competition kicks off tomorrow at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando, Florida with broadcasts on the Golf Channel and NBC.

MasterCard also says cardholders using the payment method at the event including through Apple Pay could receive promotions through the company’s “Priceless Surprises” campaign. MasterCard has previously highlighted the promotion alongside Apple Pay through TV ad spots featuring the MLB World Series and artist Gwen Stefani.

Apple Pay is currently available for use in stores and venues with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus with nearly 150 banks and credit unions active for the mobile payment service. Apple Pay will be available to even more people next month when the Apple Watch, which supports wireless payments, launches on April 24th.Filed under: iOS Tagged: Apple pay, Arnold Palmer Invitational, golf, iPhone 6, iphone 6 plus, MasterCard, mobile payment service, NFC, PGA Tour, Priceless Surprises Check out 9to5Mac for more breaking coverage of iOS, iPhone 6, and iphone 6 plus. What do you think? This Cheap Hack Shows No iPhone PIN Is Really Safe

I"ve always thought of an iPhone passcode as being fairly secure — it"s a 4-digit number, whith a lockout that prevents just mashing buttons until you find the right answer. But apparently, there"s a cheap box that can get hack your security, no matter what.

According to MDSec, there"s a $300 device called an IP Box that brute-forces iPhones over USB. Rather than trying each passcode physically on the screen, it uses USB to enter the passcode. If the attempt is incorrect, the box cuts power to the phone, preventing it from recording the failed passcode attempt, and thereby granting the box unlimited guesses at your passcode.

Each PIN entry takes 40 seconds, which means that bypassing the passcode will take around 4-5 days. That might seem like a long time, but given the wealth of data lurking on your smartphone, it"s probably worth the wait. Just another reminder that the data on your phone is never really truly safe. [MDSec]

If your bank isn’t among the nearly 150 institutions supported, expect the growing list to expand even further across 2015. Earlier this month at Apple’s March event, CEO Tim Cook shared that Apple has signed up 2500 banks to support the mobile payment service.

Apple Pay is currently available for use in apps and in stores with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Apple Pay can also be used in apps with the iPad mini 3 and iPad Air 2. When the Apple Watch launches on April 24th, Apple Pay will be able for iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, and iPhone 5s through the watch for use in stores as well. You can find our running list of merchants and apps that accept Apple Pay here.

Final Apple Watch Companion app for iPhone interface revealed [Gallery]

- 9to5mac.com

Early this year, we posted the first screenshots and details of an early version of the Apple Watch Companion application for the iPhone. Now that the application is bundled into iOS 8.2, developer Hamza Sood has activated the Apple Watch Settings portion and has shared a view of screenshots. As can be seen in the full gallery below, the interface is dark black, like the Activity app for fitness revealed yesterday, and includes all of the functionality we detailed earlier. Some interesting new settings, however, were revealed today, such as one for assigning a left or right wrist to the Watch, Handoff support, Haptic Strength, and volume levels. The Apple Watch will be released on April 24th, with pre-orders beginning on April 10th.

Developer unlocks Activity app inside iOS 8.2, appears when an Apple Watch is paired to iPhone

- 9to5mac.com

Developer Hamza Sood has done some digging inside the public iOS 8.2 build that was distributed to users on Monday. Although the Apple Watch is included by default as stock app (undeletable, whether you like it or not), the OS also includes an Activity app. Although it was previously known that the app existed, Apple has not shared details about what features the app has or even how you installed onto your phone.

Sood claims that the Activity app automatically appears on your Home Screen, once an Apple Watch is paired to the iPhone. After setup of the Activity features on the Watch itself, the app unlocks.

Nokia brings slick HERE mapping app to iPhone with full offline mode, real-time data, and much more

Four million downloads after launching its HERE mapping app for Android devices back in October, Nokia is today bringing HERE to iOS devices. I’ve been playing with the app for a while leading up to launch, and it’s a true Google Maps and Apple Maps competitor…

One of the highlight features of the HERE app for iOS is saved maps, which allows you to essentially put the entire experience directly on your device for times when you don’t have a data connection. The offline mode will even let you search, get directions, and find your own location. Like similar solutions from other mapping apps, you’ll be able to download cities and countries a la carte for offline mode out of the 150 or so maps available offline.

Opinion: Apple’s Spring Forward event signals huge changes ahead for Mac, iPad, Apple TV + Apple itself

Although many people expected that Apple’s Spring Forward event would mostly focus on the Apple Watch, more than half of the event — notably, the first part — covered other topics. Collectively, there were so many interesting developments that their individual significance was somewhat lost, particularly given that long-awaited Watch pricing news wrapped up the event.

That’s why I wanted to reconsider what Spring Forward revealed about some of Apple’s non-Watch products. Some of the announcements signal that big changes are ahead for Apple’s Mac, iPad, and Apple TV product lines, as well as Apple itself. The Best Reason Not to Buy an Apple Watch Yet

- gizmodo.com

The Best Reason Not to Buy an Apple Watch Yet

The Apple Watch is a tantalizing piece of hardware. After years of rumors, you can almost finally slide one onto your body. I"m here to throw a wet blanket on your wrist; almost no one should buy one of these things.

Yesterday"s Apple Watch presentation was an exercise in empty spectacle: A big old show by a company that had nothing to say. The Apple Watch isn"tall that impressive. Definitely not compared to the rumors of an omni-present life-pal that loomed so large before its release. It may get there eventually, but it definitely isn"t amazing yet.

As tech fans we have a tendency to think about successful gadgets in terms of the polished products they become after several iterations. We forget that version 1.0 kind of sucked.

Consider a few examples from Apple"s past:

Released in 2007, the original iPhone was an incomplete revolution. It didn"t have 3G or a front-facing camera. It didn"t have GPS or a gyroscope. Shit, it didn"t even have an App Store!

The original 2010 iPad didn"t have any cameras at all; They didn"t show up until the iPad 2. No Skype with Grandma, no FaceTime from the top of the Empire State Building. Even worse, the iPad 1 had no multitasking at launch. Have fun relaunching an app every time you want to use it. When the original iPad did get multitasking with an iOS update, performance slowed a painful crawl.

The original iPod Touch was missing key features like Bluetooth connectivity, and it didn"t get a camera until 2012.

Today, the MacBook Air is revered as a powerful machine in a tiny package for a very reasonable price. This wasn"t always the case. The little computer"s compact, streamlined design was impressive from the start but he computer didn"t become a legitimate workhorse until Apple upgraded the processors from the cheaper Intel Core Duo processors to the Intel Core i5 chipset in late 2011. And though you could get decent performance from the Air before then, the good configurations ran close to $2000.

So wait!

You should chill out on plans to buy an Apple Watch. Even if future versions of the Apple Watch eventually offer wildly unique and valuable features that range far beyond the power of alternatives like the Pebble and are more than just gimmicks, the first generation version you buy this year won"t ever get there. But if you hold on even one year for version two, it is all but guaranteed to be measurably better in countless ways. Granted, this is always true to some degree, but it"s extra true for first-gen gadgets.

For some people the glee of being the first jabroni to own the hottest gadget will cancel out all of the rational reasons that you shouldn"t buy an Apple Watch. These souls will pay whatever it takes to be the first in line. And I hope they"ve got plenty of cash because they"ll be buying the same thing next year. That or turning green with envy.

USB-C cable gallery, compare to Lightning and Micro-USB, specs and Apple’s future

Lightning vs. USB-C cable from Aukey

We’ve been pouring over Apple’s change to the 8.4mm by 2.6mm USB Type C standard since we got tipped the design of the new MacBook late last year. It is a big change for Apple and puts the future of longstanding technologies like Thunderbolt and MagSafe into questionable status.  Even Lightning seems a whole lot more vulnerable when an adapter that is marginally bigger, but has the whole industry behind it, shows up in Apple’s future flagship laptop.

Some quick, fun facts on USB Type C that make it pretty amazing:

For $10k, Apple Watch Edition gets an extra year of AppleCare warranty coverage

- 9to5mac.com

We now know the 18k gold Apple Watch Edition will start at $10,000 with models ranging up to $17,000, while the aluminum Apple Watch Sport and stainless steel Apple Watch will start at $349 and $549, respectively.

Aside from limited availability and a monumental price difference, the Apple Watch Edition will also include a more premium warranty. For the extra $9,000 or so for the Edition model, Apple is throwing in twice as much hardware repair coverage as the Apple Watch and Apple Watch Sport collections.

Apple hasn’t yet unveiled the price for the Watch’s AppleCare+, the extended warranty for Apple products, but here’s what we know about the warranty so far.

Both the Apple Watch and less expensive Apple Watch Sport include the same complimentary AppleCare warranty coverage.

This includes “one year of hardware repair coverage” and 90 days of support over the phone or online complimentary out of the box. AppleCare+ will be available for purchase, adding “up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage” with a cost and a full two years of hardware coverage and technical support.

The $10,000+ Apple Watch Edition already comes with a two full years of both limited hardware coverage and phone support. That’s one extra year of hardware coverage, and two years rather than 90 days of complimentary technical support. AppleCare+ for the Apple Watch Edition will extend both to a full three years and add the same two accidental damage incidents.
