BBM makeover will rid Android and iOS of the ugly BB10 interface

- cultofmac.com

iphone from apple 1406734370 844863911

BlackBerry finally gave in and brought its famous BBM messaging service to Android and iOS last year, but it wanted to remind us that it still had a smartphone platform of its own by giving its apps a nasty BlackBerry 10 style user interface. Upcoming BBM updates will change that, however, with a new makeover that brings a more native user experience.

The BlackBerry 10 platform itself isn’t actually all that terrible. In fact, I’ve written a number of pieces praising many aspects of it — one of which listed some BB10 features that I thought Google should bring to Android. But when it comes to visual design, it falls a little short in comparison with Android and iOS.

As a result, BlackBerry’s decision to give BBM a BB10 look on these platforms has never been a particularly popular decision. But fortunately for us, the company recognizes that and it’s going to make some changes.

Speaking at the BlackBerry Security Summit this week, company president John Sims admitted that previous managers believed the BBM experience would be better if it looked the same on every platform. “Our view of that is that’s not the case,” he added — and so BBM is getting a makeover.

Sims said that BBM “needs to be more of a native app experience” on third-party platforms, and so we “can expect to see that manifest itself in our Android and iPhone BBM apps.”

Sims didn’t provide a timeline for the makeover, unfortunately, so we’ll have to wait to hear more from BlackBerry — but it should be worth the wait. The BB10 interface in BBM has never looked right on Android and iOS, so this will surely be good news for those who continue to use BBM on third-party platforms.

Skype says free group video calling coming in the future to more platforms

- 9to5mac.com

Earlier this month, Microsoft-owned Skype rolled out a group video calling feature to Windows tablets. The free video calling allows for calls with up to ten people, and integrates with Skype on the desktop, which has supported group video calling since April.

Today, Skype tells us that the group video calling feature will be coming to all of its mobile platforms in the future, which likely includes iOS and Android:

We’re excited about Skype group video calling and are working to bring it to more of our platforms. In the future, we’ll be enabling group video calling for all our users across more platforms – at no cost

Unfortunately, the company could not yet provide a more specific rollout timeframe. Skype has been rapidly releasing new products over the past several months, with a major redesign of the Skype iPhone app arriving a couple of months ago.

Beats Music iOS app updated w/ customizable recommendations, Sentence history, verified badges, more

- 9to5mac.com

Just as news hit this morning that the European Commission approved Apple’s acquisition of Beats, the Beats Music iOS app just received an update with a number of notable new features.

Included in version 2.2.0 of the app for iPhone and iPad is the ability to customize the app’s “Just for You” recommendations with a feature called Tune Your Taste. From within Settings, Tune Your Taste will allow users to customize things like genre and artists to get more personalized recommendations.

A new “Sentence History” feature lets users view past playlists created using The Sentence feature, and verified badges for profiles puts a red checkmark next to profiles “certified as legit by Beats.” The Sentence is a feature of the app that allows users to create a sentence that includes a location, emotion, genre, and other preferences that in return automatically creates a playlist of music for the situation.

The update also includes other improvements to the player that according to the release notes “make playback more smooth and reliable.”

The updated Beats Music iOS app is available on the App Store now. A full list of what’s new is below:

What’s New in Version 2.2.0

You asked for it, and we listened! In this latest release we’ve added:

● Tune Your Taste — Want to switch up your Just For You recommendations? Change your favorite genres and artists with the Tune Your Taste feature in Settings

● Sentence History — View your most recently played songs from The Sentence

● Verified Badges — That red check mark means the profile is certified as legit by Beats

● Player Improvements — We fixed a ton of bugs to make playback more smooth and reliable

Hilton hotels to let you use your iPhone as your hotel key from next year

- 9to5mac.com

Queuing up at a hotel check-in desk is often the last thing you want to do after a long flight. Starting next year, you’ll be able to bypass the front desk altogether in Hilton hotels, your iPhone serving as as your hotel room key.

We’ve seen the same thing in smaller hotel groups, but Hilton’s adoption of the technology moves it very much into the mainstream. The group told the WSJ that it will begin introducing the new door locks next year, and expects to complete the global roll-out by the end of 2016.

The Hilton app already allows you to check-in electronically, but currently you still need to collect your room key from the front desk – which kind of defeats the object. With the new system, iPhone check-in will send a key code to your phone which can then be used to unlock your door.

Bluetooth-controlled door locks for home are also expected to be a big thing this year, with products on the way from Okidokeys and August.Filed under: AAPL Company Continue reading more about AAPL Company at 9to5Mac.What do you think? Apple Stores unify employee shirts as major customer service enhancements planned

- 9to5mac.com

Apple is taking a small-step to unifying the attire of its U.S.-based Apple Store employees this upcoming week: the black shirts worn by Apple Store Business Team members for several years will be going into retirement, and all Apple Store employees will begin wearing the same, classic blue t-shirts as normally seen on the store sales floors. Is this a move from the handbook of Angela Ahrendts’ fashion background? Probably not. Sources say that the move happened in Europe a few months ago and the change-up is simply to unify the Apple Store teams as one. The business team will continue exist in its current form (for now), so this is mostly just a visual change.

In other news, multiple sources also say that Apple is planning some significant operational changes within its stores to improve customer experience…

Last week, YouTuber Marques Brownlee got his hands on what is claimed to be a sapphire glass panel from Apple’s upcoming iPhone 6. The initial video (found here) put the panel through a variety of torture tests including, knives, keys, and even a flexibility test to show off the panel’s durability. While there were no scientific tests performed to prove the front glass is actually sapphire, the result of each test was very impressive. Well, apparently that wasn’t enough…

New photos of purported Lightning and audio connections for iPhone 6 surface

A user on the MacX forum [translation] claims to have gotten his hands on a part from the upcoming iPhone 6 that features the data and audio connectors, as well as one of the device’s microphones. The source of these photos? According to the poster:

Source is one of my junior high school classmates, he never phones in Shenzhen, the manufacturing industry a few years, I did not ask him where to come

Given the fact that this is from an unknown source, it would be prudent to question the veracity of any claims made regarding these images. That said, there’s also a chance the part could be real. Let’s take a closer look at the second photo:

Problems with Hannover Apple Store reportedly resolved, opening in September

- 9to5mac.com

Humidity and mold problems that delayed the opening of the new Apple Store in Hannover, Germany, have reportedly been resolved, and the store is now expected to open in September, reports ifun, citing several sources involved in the project.

The store had originally seemed close to completion in March, but humidity in the building reportedly led to mold in the fabric of the building, requiring remedial work.

The site ifun reported that employees who had already been hired based on the previous anticipated opening have been informed of the latest developments, and is speculating that Apple may time the opening to coincide with the launch of the iPhone 6, rumored to be on 19th September.

Following with the appointment of retail head Angela Ahrendts, Apple announced an ambitious international expansion program for its retail stores, with around 20 expected to open this year. International stores already opened this year include the first ever Apple Stores in Brazil and Turkey, the fourth store in Switzerland and the eighth store in Japan.

Earlier this month, Apple was granted a European trademark on the design of its retail stores.Filed under: AAPL Company Tagged: Angela Ahrendts, Apple, Apple Retail, Apple retail stores, Apple Store, Apple Store Hannover, Brazil, Hannover, Hanover, iPhone, iPhone 6, retail, Tokyo For more information about AAPL Company, Apple, and iPhone continue reading at 9to5Mac.What do you think? Overcast is a hot new podcast app for the iPhone from Marco Arment

- cultofmac.com

iphone 1405587703 746034

About a month ago, I said on Twitter that I was looking for a new podcast app to try. I’ve been a user of Instacast on iOS and OS X for a long time, but recently the app’s cloud sync has become too unreliable and glitchy.

I got a lot of suggestions, but ended up settling with Apple’s own Podcasts app. It didn’t address several things I wanted out of a podcast client, but it was the most reliable and easy to use option from what I came across.

And now, lo and behold, the most highly-anticipated new podcast app in a long time has come out. Today Marco Arment released Overcast, a simple and yet powerful podcast app for the iPhone. I’ve given it a test run, and although there is plenty of room for improvement, I’m pretty impressed.

Originally announced in September of last year, Overcast has technically been in the works since late 2012. That’s a long time for any app, but it probably had something to do with how busy Marco Arment keeps himself. If you don’t know anything about Arment, you’ve probably heard of some of the stuff he has made. He helped make Tumblr, created Instapaper, launched the first successful Newsstand-only periodical called The Magazine, and is a co-host of the Accidental Tech Podcast.

Like many others, I’ve been eager to see his take on what a podcast client should be. It helps that I’m personally invested in the podcasting world as a co-host of this site’s show, The CultCast.

Review: Overcast for iPhone, the newest contender for the iOS podcast app market

- 9to5mac.com

With Instapaper and The Magazine, Marco Arment effectively invented the read-it-later and independent publishing idioms on iOS. Naturally, competitors followed but Arment was already a ‘front runner’ in the market. With Overcast, Arment is the follower. Overcast joins a whole host of other developers in a segment of the App Store that is already well established. It’s a different set of challenges.

In many respects, Overcast acts like its the only podcast app on the iPhone. I mean this in a good way. There aren’t any gimmicky extras or visual widgets to try and spur interest. This is very much Arment’s take on how a podcast app should look and behave. Read on for our full review …

Apple updates iOS developer statistics, claims 90% adoption rate for iOS 7

- 9to5mac.com

An update to one of Apple’s iOS developer pages today indicates that the latest version of the company’s mobile operating system has reached 90% adoption among users. That’s up about 15% since December of last year, when three quarters of users had upgraded.

The chart doesn’t break down which version of iOS 7 specifically users are running, but it’s safe to assume that the number of devices running iOS 7.1 has increased significantly since it debuted in March.

Apple revealed the next iteration of iOS, version 8.0, is already three betas into testing and is expected to be launched this fall alongside new iPhone hardware.Filed under: AAPL Company Tagged: adoption, iOS 7 For more news on AAPL Company, iOS 7, and adoption continue reading at 9to5Mac.What do you think? Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty is predicting that the iWatch could achieve sales of 30-60 million units in its first year as sales growth mimics that of the iPhone or iPad, reports Fortune.

While some analysts point to modest sales of existing smartwatches as evidence that the iWatch is likely to be a relatively minor new category for Apple, Huberty believes that they are using the wrong measure.

According to the note, issues with the in-cell touch panel and coloring of the device could push the launch of the device back to a post-October date, possibly as late as next year:

Chinese clone-makers already have functional ‘iPhone 6′ knockoffs for sale

NowhereElse.fr has posted some pretty amusing pictures today of working iPhone 6 clones from China. These devices use the rumored specification and schematics of the actual iPhone 6 that we have seen so much over the last few months, but obviously use off-the-shelf internals and don’t run iOS.

Although unconfirmed what knockoff OS these devices are running, it is most likely a skinned version of Android with a custom launcher that imitates the appearance of iOS 7. The Google Play store is already full of iOS 7 Home Screen and app clones.

Apple paid out over $3 billion to small businesses last year through SupplierPay program

Apple’s operations chief said today that the company paid out over $3 billion to small businesses that supplied Apple with parts for its products in 2013. That money was split up between around 7,000 different suppliers as part of the SupplierPay program started by the White House.

SupplierPay is an extension of a federal program called QuickPay that required the government to issue payments to small business partners within 15 days of billing in an attempt to promote economic growth. With SupplierPay, the program is extended (optionally) to private businesses like Apple.

Will Apple have iWatches ready to hit the shelves when it announces the wearable at its rumored event in October? Probably not.

Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, who is undoubtedly the most accurate Apple analyst on the planet, is saying that Apple won’t begin mass production of the iWatch until November. He has also lowered his sales projections considerably because of “complications” Apple has to deal with concerning new materials like sapphire.

Earlier this year, Kuo predicted that the iWatch would be released alongside a bunch of other new Apple hardware in the fall. That’s still the case by most accounts, but the timing seems to still be in limbo as Apple works out kinks in the manufacturing process.

According to Kuo, the iWatch will indeed have a slightly curved AMOLED display with a sapphire protective coating. It’s already been rumored that sapphire will be in the iWatch along with the iPhone 6, so that’s no surprise. A recent scratch test with an iPhone 6 display panel showed that sapphire is basically indestructible, which is what you want on your wrist.

The new TaskRabbit wants to be like Uber for everything

With Uber or Lyft, you can summon a car to pick you up with a tap on your iPhone. TaskRabbit makes it that easy to find someone to do your grocery shopping or even stand in line all day for the new iPhone.

Until today, TaskRabbit has operated on an auction-like bidding system for handling tasks. Not only is TaskRabbit killing that model, but it’s releasing a redesigned app with automatic Client and Tasker pairing, one-click hiring, and its own messaging platform.

After today’s changes, TaskRabbit has become a blend of two things. It’s a more evolved, mobile-friendly version of the jobs section of Craigslist, and it’s applying the on-demand aspect of Uber to just about any kind of errand or odd-job you could hire someone to do.
