Continuing the string of controversy regarding App Store approval in recent weeks, an update pushed through by GoodReader ($4.99, iPhone and iPad) earlier today shows that the company has been forced to remove some significant iCloud Drive features, in order to comply with iCloud Drive usage guidelines and remain in the App Store.

Specifically, the GoodReader update removes the ability to add folders, remove folders or move files around the iCloud Drive storage location. The update notes reference a ‘usage policy’, although it is unclear what document the company is referring to.

T-Mobile CEO predicts Apple Watch will take wearables mainstream in 2015 + MORE

T-Mobile CEO predicts Apple Watch will take wearables mainstream in 2015

- 9to5mac.com

In the months leading up to the launch of the Apple Watch next year, early opinions about the smartwatch have been quite mixed. While some believe that the Apple Watch will be as successful as iconic products released ahead of it, including the iPhone, iPad, iPod and Mac, others are more skeptical about how much of an impact the device will truly have.

While the wearables market is forecasted to become over a $5 billion industry by 2018, it hasn’t reached that point just yet. But T-Mobile CEO John Legere certainly thinks it will sooner than later, predicting that the Apple Watch launch in 2015 will be the turning point in which the wearables market goes from niche to mainstream.

“I love what Jawbone, Fitbit, Samsung, LG, Microsoft and others are doing in the wearables space,” wrote Legere. “But we haven’t begun to see the potential of this category. It’s going to go from $1 to $20 billion in the next few years. And though we won’t see its full impact in 2015, I believe that the Apple Watch will mark the tipping point when wearables go from niche to mainstream.”

Multiple rumors suggest that mass production of the Apple Watch will begin in January, ahead of an “early 2015″ release. Apple CEO Tim Cook recently demoed the Apple Watch for Chinese officials during a U.S. visit and Apple Stores have been recruiting fashion and luxury experts ahead of the smartwatch’s debut.

As far as sales figures are concerned, Morgan Stanley predicts that 10% of users with an iPhone 5 or newer will purchase an Apple Watch, leading to first year sales of around 30 million units. Apple Watch will start at $349, likely for the entry-level Sport edition, while the luxurious gold model will reportedly sell for between $4,000 to $5,000.

In his prediction letter, Legere also mentioned the strides that T-Mobile has made over the past year and reiterated that the company will soon overtake Sprint to become the U.S.’s third-largest wireless carrier. The CEO added that T-Mobile will expand its LTE network in 2015 to cover some 300 million Americans, up from its current 264 million footprint.Filed under: Apple Watch Tagged: 2015, Apple watch, CEO, John Legere, Mainstream, Prediction, T-Mobile, Wearables For more news on T-Mobile, Apple watch, and Apple Watch continue reading at 9to5Mac.What do you think? This Table Protects You From Burning Hot Beverages

- gizmodo.com

[embedded content]What if your dining room table could show you when your coffee or cocoa is too hot to drink? That could be a reality today: hacker Ken Kawamoto shows us how with a technique called thermal projection mapping.

Basically, it"s just a combination of two things we already love: 1.) the FLIR ONE case that turns your iPhone into a thermal camera, and 2.) the projection mapping technique which can turn any surface into an animated CG masterpiece by painting it with pixels. Thermal projection mapping, then, is simply using those pixels to paint surfaces with the amount of heat they give off, as measured by a thermal camera.

The result is way cooler than the explanation, though. You can see how hot something is before you pick it up, without the need to whip out a thermometer or a FLIR-equipped phone. [Ken Kawamoto via Hack A Day]

The Most Popular Christmas Gifts of the Last Decade: Elmo, Apple, Elmo

The Most Popular Christmas Gifts of the Last Decade: Elmo, Apple, Elmo

- gizmodo.com

The Most Popular Christmas Gifts of the Last Decade: Elmo, Apple, Elmo

The most popular Christmas gifts over the past 10 years speak volumes about what people like. Which apparently is Elmo and iPods (but mostly Elmo). But if we look a little closely, it also says a whole lot about just how far tech has progressed. Let"s take a look.

Before we entered into the new Willennium, the internet was still pretty new to us, and shiny gadgets weren"t exactly the big gifts yet. For example in 1998, the big gift was a Furby, based on my entirely unscientific assessment of Amazon sales data, cultural hype, and news reports year by year. In 1999, it was all about Pokemon. And by 2000, it was a Razor scooter. You know, toys in the traditional sense.

In the early 2000s came the switch to electronics, and they"ve reigned supreme since. Except for Elmo. Amazon told Gizmodo that, based on its data, Elmo has been a consistent favorite over the last decade. Remember when the Tickle Me Elmo first came out in "96? People went gaga for that thing. And Mattel (which bought Tyco, the original maker of Tickle Me Elmo) has kept iterating Elmo to keep the toy"s popularity alive.

Perhaps the only products to rival Elmo"s reign have been shiny new Apple products. But let"s trace it back 10 years.

2004: RoboSapien

[embedded content]

I don"t know what we were doing in 2004, but 10 years ago, this was the toy of Christmas. Sure, it was produced by a NASA scientist, but its biggest selling points were pre-programmed dance moves that could sync up with other RoboSapiens and also farts. It sold 1.5 million units between April and December of that year.

2005: Xbox 360

How to Set Up Your New iPhone the Right Way

How to Set Up Your New iPhone the Right Way

You got a new iPhone! Maybe it"s a slightly bigger iPhone 6 or a bigger-still 6 Plus. Either way, what now? Here"s what you need to get started with your new iPhone, whether you"re a first-timer or an iOS pro.

Charging Tip

As with any smartphone, the iPhone"s weakest link is its battery. Treating your Li-ion with respect will not only extend the life and usefulness of your new phone, but also boost its resale value—just in case you decide to dump it back on the market prematurely.

There are a couple of different ways to give your battery the respect it deserves, but it boils down to three main points:

Let your phone get all the way to zero once, when you first get it, to calibrate the battery. From there on out try to keep it north of 50 percent as much as possible.

Top it off whenever you can. Li-ion batteries do well with little bursts of charge now and then, so don"t be afraid to charge in fits and starts whenever you get the chance.

Don"t let it get too hot. The lamest way to murder your battery is by letting it get too warm. So don"t like, leave it near the stove, you dingus.

Mac Starter Pack: unleash your iTunes gift card and upgrade your Mac with these great apps

- 9to5mac.com

Let’s assume you unwrapped a brand new Mac this year (awesome!) or scored a ton of iTunes/iBooks/App Store credit (still awesome!) and you need ideas for awesome apps to buy and check out for your new MacBook or iMac. Tons of new apps have launched on the Mac this year and even more have added new features and remain essential. Below are some of my favorite Mac apps that I’ve used needed from time to time or even use daily and should give you a solid place to start whether your a brand new Mac user or Mac veteran looking to do more with your machine.

If you’re setting up a new Mac, you’ve got access to great Apple apps like Pages, Keynote, and Numbers for productivity and iMovie and GarageBand for your creative endeavors… each included.

If you’re looking to step up your music creation or video editing, though, Apple also offers pro-oriented apps in the Mac App Store: Logic Pro X (review) and MainStage 3, Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Compressor.

Finally, if you’re curious about ebook creation for Apple’s iBookstore, check out iBooks Author. (iPhoto and the pro upgrade Aperture are also available, but both are being replaced by a new Photos app in 2015 with pros likely looking at Adobe’s Lightroom as an alternative solution.)

Now for some third-party essentials:

Airmail 2.0 $9.99 — For many people, Apple’s built-in Mail app on OS X just doesn’t get the job done. While I’m pretty satisfied with Mail on Yosemite, many people, especially Gmail users, prefer third party alternative mail apps. If you’re looking for something with a very customizable user interface, Gmail shortcuts, attachment support for Google Drive, Dropbox, Droplr, and more, then give Airmail 2.0 a spin. Works with iCloud, Gmail, Exchange, IMAP, and POP3 accounts.

Here’s how to watch The Interview on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV

- 9to5mac.com

After much controversy, Sony Pictures released the Seth Rogen comedy The Interview on Google Play and YouTube earlier today. If you’re looking to brave the wrath of North Korea and watch the movie for yourself, there are a number of ways you can do so on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV. Of course, you can also watch on your Mac by heading over to YouTube, Google Play, or Sony’s own dedicated site.

For an iOS device, you’ll want to take a look at the YouTube or Google Play Movies apps. Neither of those apps have the ability to actually rent the movie, so you’ll need to do that from a computer, but once you have you’ll be able to stream it to your mobile devices with no problem.

You can also rent and stream the film to the new YouTube app on the Apple TV, although, as Google notes in a help document on its support site, this will require a third-generation Apple TV.Filed under: AAPL Company Tagged: Sony, the interview Continue reading more about AAPL Company, Sony, and the interview at 9to5Mac.What do you think? Mac Pro monitor review: The best 4K & UHD monitors for Mac

- 9to5mac.com

So Apple didn’t release a 4K (or 5K) standalone Retina display alongside the new 5K iMac, but you can’t hold off any longer on a shiny new display for your Mac Pro. I found myself in the same predicament not too long ago and decided to put a number of displays to the test in recent months. 4K might offer 4x the resolution of your standard 1080p display, but for the short time they’ve been around, they’ve also cost about 4x as much as the alternatives. The good news: There are a few Mac Pro compatible 4K displays (and UHD alternatives) finally starting to hit more reasonable price points just as recent OS X updates fix some issues early adopters first had with the higher resolution displays.

I’ve been testing Mac Pro compatible displays from Dell, Sharp, Samsung, LG, and others that are officially supported by Apple, and put together a list of my thoughts and top picks for those planning on picking up a new Mac Pro this holiday season. Despite my tests being done mostly on a new, stock Mac Pro, these picks stand for Thunderbolt-equipped MacBook users as well.

Who Wouldn't Want This Smart Snowboard for Christmas?

Who Wouldn"t Want This Smart Snowboard for Christmas?

- gizmodo.com

Who Wouldn

YouTube channel Network A is a lover of all things X Games—snowboarding, skateboarding, BMX, you name it. For their video series Every Third Thursday, Signal Snowboards, known for cool and atypical board designs, created the first open source programmable snowboard that can change music depending on the snowboarder"s orientation.

The tinkerers wanted to make something a little more complicated than just slapping lights on a snowboard, mainly because they"d already conquered that challenge. With help from Matt Davis, a musician and programmer, the team began building a snowboard equipped with GPS, an accelerometer, rechargeable battery, and Bluetooth for communication with the required smartphone app.

[embedded content]

Davis first worked on turning an iPhone into a wireless MIDI controller so they could get the sounds mapped with motion just the way they wanted. After that, they embedded all the tech into their own custom board and took it to the slopes. In the video, you can listen to the change in music as the board travels down the slope, grinding on rails, and performing other tricks.

At the five-minute clip"s conclusion, Davis brings up an interesting point: "Where"s the point where the art starts affecting your performance on the mountain? Are you trying to maximize your performance on the run or are you trying to make the coolest music possible? Then it kind of just blends together."

All I know is that I want one. [Hackaday]

Review: iHome’s iBN10 sheds the dock and alarms for a minimalist new four-speaker design

Review: iHome’s iBN10 sheds the dock and alarms for a minimalist new four-speaker design

- 9to5mac.com

I’ve reviewed a lot of iHome clock radios over the past nine years. They weren’t all formulaic, but there was a very clear evolutionary line from the original 2005-vintage, iPod-only iH5 to the iPad-ready iDL95 released last year: take two speakers, stick a clock in the middle, center a dock on the top, then make the enclosure sort of flat but pleasantly curvy. iHome had a winning general concept and look, which it updated annually with small feature, color, and shape tweaks. But its new $120 model iBN10 breaks the mold in several ways.

The dock’s gone, the clock has been glammed up and shifted to the right, and there are four speakers inside, rather than the standard two. iBN10 is also atypically handsome, built and billed as an “executive music system” by discarding the faux metals that iHome’s midrange speakers have become known for, and adding speakerphone functionality. This isn’t iHome’s first Kleenex box-sized speaker, but it’s definitely the most sophisticated.

Are you unsure of how to install or download apps to your iphone?

Rice helps to reduce the moisture on your iPhone. It is fairly common to drop an iPhone and get it wet. Do not use a hair dryer, but wipe the phone with a towel and then place it in a ziploc bag that is filled with rice. Allow the phone to dry overnight or as long as possible.

Review: Master & Dynamic MH40 headphones rival my much-loved B&W P5s

- 9to5mac.com

When I put together my premium headphone gift guide, a commentator suggested that there was one more pair that deserved to make the list: the $399 Master & Dynamic MH40. The visual design had initially led me to assume these were semi-open cans – and thus not ideal for mobile use – but I found this wasn’t the case, and decided to give them a try.

I should say I’m a hard sell with headphones. I may not venture into four-figure professional headphone territory, but I’m prepared to spend a decent chunk of change on something with well above average sound, and my beloved Bowers & Wilkins P5s were the result of much research and listening time. They match superb sound with extremely sleek looks and great comfort. P5s are, for me, the standard against which all other premium headphones get judged, so you’ll understand me drawing comparisons between the two.

The MH40 is aimed at the same market. A similar price, broadly similar looks, same foldable design, same embedded controls and mic for use with phone calls as well as music. The question was: how would they compare … ?

Apple Halts Online Sales in Russia Due to Seesawing Rouble

Apple Halts Online Sales in Russia Due to Seesawing Rouble

- gizmodo.com

iphone 1418821305 863277938

The wildly fluctuating worth of the Russian rouble currency has lead iPhone makers Apple to halt online sales in the country, as the tech giant cannot set stable prices for its wares.

The rouble has dropped in worth 20 per cent this week, despite the treasury"s dramatic decision to raise interest rates a whopping 6.5 per cent to 17%. In the past few hours the rouble hit an all time low, with a dollar worth 79 roubles. It"s settled a little now, sitting at 71 roubles to the dollar at the time of writing.

Russia"s actions in Ukraine have caused the slide, with economists fearing fresh sanctions from the US over Russia"s support of the separatist movement in its neighbouring country. The weak rouble had meant that Apple products were massively more affordable in Russia than in other European territories, leaving Apple out of pocket and plucky importers with iPhone and iPad bargains on their hands.

Will this bother Premier Putin? Probably not — he claims not to have a smartphone as it"d be ringing off the hook. He"s a popular guy. But prime minister Dmitry Medvedev might shed a tear though — he is a big Apple fan, and was personally given an iPhone 4 by Steve Jobs before it had even been officially released. [BBC]

USB wall chargers are commodities, churned out by anonymous factories and sold for low prices everywhere around the world. But chargers that are both safe and fast enough to use with Apple’s products are less common, particularly when they are capable of charging more than one device at a time. RAVPower’s Dual 2.4A USB Wall Charger ($50, currently $13), Bolt 4-Port Desktop USB Charger ($70, currently $17), and Bolt 6-Port Desktop USB Charger ($70, currently $27) have such low street prices that they seem too good to be true. I still remember the original iPhone background. You know. The ridiculously simple shot of Earth. No phone background since has really captured my imagination in the same way since. Aerial Wallpapers, a site that finds great satellite photos and optimizes them for phones, has just changed all of that.

The site is the work of João Paulo Bernardes, who curates open-source images from the likes of Airbus and NASA. He"s got a pretty great eye — there"s everything from great nature shots of ice breaking (my new background), to hi-res shots of cities, fields, and volcanos. If you"re bored of your stock image, and you want something to cheer up your weekend, these are definitely worth a shot. [Tumblr via Kottke]

Google introduces Route 85 web series geared towards iOS developers

- 9to5mac.com

Google may own the world’s most popular mobile operating system in Android, but it wants iPhone and iPad developers to recognize that the company has a lot to offer for them as well. Enter a new web series called Route 85, which will consist of a set of videos uploaded to the Google Developers channel on YouTube to showcase everything from SDKs to code libraries that iOS developers can take advantage of.

Google developer advocate Todd Kerpelman is tasked with leading this new series of videos for iOS developers, beginning with the humorous introduction clip below. While its bread and butter is and always will be Android, Google has a number of iPhone and iPad apps on the App Store, including Google AdSense, Google Analytics, Google Drive, Google Maps, Blogger, Chrome, Gmail, Hangouts, Inbox, Google+ and YouTube.

It might seem perplexing that Google is willing to cater to developers working on another mobile platform, but the search company can benefit from an expanded audience to push its advertising and services to. Additionally, the wide array of apps and services that Google provides for the iPhone and iPad serves as a potential gateway for future converts to Android. Ultimately, it’s a win-win situation for Google.

Apple fast tracks CarPlay hardware development w/ official MFi specs for head units

- 9to5mac.com

Apple’s new CarPlay iOS feature has recently arrived through a limited number of in-dash vehicle entertainment systems and aftermarket products, but Apple has now introduced official guidelines for companies building CarPlay hardware through its Made-for-iPhone/iPad/iPod (MFi) licensing program, according to sources.

Apple confirms in the specs that CarPlay will only be allowed for in-dash units built into vehicles or through aftermarket installations and that rear-seat or other integrations are not yet permitted.

While most current implementations utilize USB to connect to an iPhone, Apple allows use of a Lightning connector via a dock or custom cable solution. In addition, Apple has requirements for audio and noise cancellation features, such as recommending hardware be capable of 24 bit 48kHz audio (but allows 16 bit at a lesser sample rate). It also allows a vehicle to send sensor data to an Apple device including estimate range remaining, engine type, outside temperature, and more.

Other requirements include a display with a minimum 6-inch diagonal display with a minimum resolution of 800 x 480 and 30 Hz refresh rate, and a tactile hardware button for Siri (in some cases located on the steering wheel).

Apple will have all of its CarPlay hardware go through the MFi program, which means the product will require an authentication chip that aims to prevent unofficial products from offering the CarPlay feature.

Since officially introducing CarPlay earlier this year, Apple has worked with mostly  major vehicle manufacturers, and the feature has arrived in select vehicles along with a couple aftermarket options (We reviewed one from Pioneer.) Apple has announced a long list of car manufacturers working to implement the feature, and many have announced it will arrive in upcoming vehicles, but so far only Ferrari has the feature on the road in new vehicles while others stall on firmware updates for previously announced vehicles.

In addition, Apple has also revised specs outlining best practices for user interaction with its Siri Eyes Free feature available in select vehicles.

While we’ve so far only seen CarPlay aftermarket products from Pioneer and Alpine, we could see many others hit the market soon following the introduction of specs for all.
