South African police take Oscar Pistorius’s iPhone to Apple after failing to crack passcode

- 9to5mac.com

Reeva Steenkamp, shot dead by Oscar Pistorius (photo: India Times)

The International Business Times reports that three detectives investigating the killing of Oscar Pistorius’s girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp have flown to Apple’s HQ in Cupertino to seek assistance in accessing the athlete’s iPhone.

Prosecutors want to access its SMS and WhatsApp messages as evidence for the trial.

South African police have been struggling to gain access to the phone for months, one of several handsets found in the double-amputee athlete’s Pretoria villa on the night he shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Pistorius has claimed that he cannot remember the passcode …

Evidence from a second mobile phone found in the villa reportedly revealed that Pistorius had been accessing pornography on the night of the killing.

[The phone] suggests that he looked at the material while Steenkamp was present in the building, on Valentine’s Day 2013.

The document goes on to state that this evidence paints a picture in “direct contrast to that of a loving couple spending their time together.”

South African police had reportedly asked the FBI to authorise Apple to unlock the phone, but that this has not yet happened, and the matter is now urgent as the murder trial begins on Monday.

Pistorius has admitted shooting Steenkamp through a bathroom door, but says that he did so believing her to be an intruder. Prosecutors will argue that he deliberately shot her following an argument.

The fact that even police were unable to bypass the passcode lock is testament to the security of iPhones, though law enforcement officials would of course have an easier time with an iPhone 5s, simply needing to obtain a court order to use a fingerprint to unlock the phone.

Appellate court overturns conviction, rules use of cell phone maps while driving legal despite ban on texting or talking

- 9to5mac.com

Steven Spriggs, a Fresno man who was ticketed for using his iPhone while driving in January of 2012, won an appeal of his conviction today in a ruling that could potentially impact how drivers are allowed to use their phones while on the road.

Because Spriggs was using his phone’s mapping application when he was pulled over, the court overturned his conviction, stating that maps do not fall under the state ban on texting or talking on a cell phone while driving. Any drivers who were previously ticketed for a similar offense may be able to get their own tickets overturned.Filed under: Tech Industry For more information about Tech Industry continue reading at 9to5Mac.What do you think? Apple explains Touch ID in depth with latest iOS security document

- 9to5mac.com

In the latest release of its iOS Security document spotted by TechCrunch, Apple offers a number of details about the function and processes of the Touch ID fingerprint recognition system offered on its iPhone 5s. The document describes the Secure Enclave, “a coprocessor fabricated in the Apple A7 chip,” which manages safely matching active fingerprints read by Touch ID against registered fingerprints saved by the user. While much of how Touch ID behaves was revealed last fall when the iPhone 5s was introduced and through experience, the white page does list more specifics than have previously been made available…

According to Apple, a single registered fingerprint creates a 1 in 50,000 chance of a successful random match with someone else’s print.

Apple describes the Secure Enclave’s system for safely managing identities while keeping the data separate from the rest of the system through encrypted memory and a hardware random number generator.

Should Apple open the iPhone’s fingerprint sensor to devs in iOS 8? [Poll]

- 9to5mac.com

With Touch ID in the iPhone 5s, Apple wasn’t the first to integrate a fingerprint sensor in a smartphone, but it certainly popularized the feature as other manufacturers race to build similar technology into their next-gen iPhone competitors. HTC is packing in fingerprint sensors in its latest flagship devices and Samsung announced its new Galaxy S5 earlier this week with finger scanning as one of the standout upgrades. The verdict is still out on how Samsung’s tech compares to Touch ID, but it is interesting to see how others are using fingerprint sensors while Apple keeps it closed to developers and offers very limited applications. With Samsung letting app developers access the new S5′s fingerprint scanner for mobile payments and more right out of the gate, should Apple open the fingerprint sensor to devs in iOS 8?

Apple decided that initially Touch ID would be limited to unlocking the device and authorizing App Store and iTunes purchases. Samsung, on the other hand, has just announced an updated SDK that gives developers access to request fingerprint recognition and “Verify whether the fingerprint of the current user matches the fingerprint registered on the device.” That opens up a ton of potential applications for Android app developers and could be a big selling point when consumers compare the iPhone’s fingerprint features to the Galaxy S5.  Samsung will be doing payments with the sensor through PayPal as well as device unlocking and a private mode that keeps certain content hidden until activated with the sensor. HTC has a feature that lets users assign each finger to a different app for quickly launching apps with a touch. Apple’s limited Touch ID functionality is quickly starting to look outdated.

Will Apple open the fingerprint sensor to developers in iOS 8? CEO Tim Cook did all but confirm new functionality is on the way when talking about mobile payments during Apple’s earnings call last month:

The mobile payments area in general is one we’ve been intrigued with. It was one of the thoughts behind Touch ID [...] it’s a big opportunity …

Even with the possibility for mobile payments using Touch ID, which we’ve discussed in the past, the question remains whether Apple will keep it closed to developers to focus on its own mobile payments system, slowly open up new functionality feature by feature, or simply allow devs the opportunity access the hardware freely for any number of use cases in their apps?Filed under: iOS Tagged: developers, fingerprint, Galaxy S5, HTC, iOS 8, iPhone, iPhone 5S, Samsung, scan, SDK, sensor For more news on iPhone, Samsung, and iPhone 5S continue reading at 9to5Mac.What do you think? Sprint MVNO ‘Ting’ will add support for iPhone 5 on its usage based plans next week

- 9to5mac.com

Soon users will be able to activate their unlocked Sprint iPhone 5 on Ting, the Tucows-owned Sprint MVNO offering no-contract wireless service and usage-based billing. Late last year we reported that the company had made a deal with Apple and Sprint to begin supporting iPhones. At the time the bring-your-own-device support was limited to the iPhone 4 and 4S and sources told us iPhone 5 support was held up by Sprint, which doesn’t typically offer popular devices to its smaller carrier partners until they are at least a generation or two behind. Now, with the iPhone 5s & 5c on the market for almost half a year, sources say Sprint and Apple are finally ready to give Ting the go ahead for iPhone 5 support.

Smaller Mobile Virtual Network Operators like Ting often have a hard time getting permission to offer the iPhone, which usually requires minimum purchase requirements from Apple and other stipulations. Ting’s iPhone support was originally not advertised on its website due to its deal with Apple and Sprint that required it to operate in a sort of beta mode until it proved capable of supporting iPhone customers, representing the brand, and properly screening for lost and stolen devices. It’s apparently been able to do that as it now advertises the ability to activate an iPhone 4 or 4s.

While Ting is competing directly with new no-contract wireless services like the Verizon-backed Zact and T-Mobile’s new Uncarrier strategy, it offers users what it sees as more transparent service plan pricing that charges customers based on their usage. Its plans start as low as $3 a month for the lowest tiers of talk time, messaging, and data.

Sources say the iPhone 5 should be officially supported on Ting by next week.Filed under: iOS Tagged: Apple, bring your own device, iPhone 5, MVNO, no-contract, Sprint, support, Ting, usage billing Continue reading more about Apple, iPhone 5, and Sprint at 9to5Mac.What do you think? WWE Network comes to Apple TV with in-app subscriptions as service debuts

- 9to5mac.com

Update: The WWE Apple TV app is now live for users in at least the US and Canada.

Following rumors back and forth regarding the new WWE network launching today, the company has just announced that the service will be available to Apple TV users. WWE confirmed to us in a statement that the Apple TV app will arrive today.

The Apple TV app will provide access to all 12 live WWE Pay-PerView events including WrestleMania, original programming from the network like reality shows and documentaries, as well as 24/7 programming from WWE and a ton of on-demand content.

The update appears to have hit Apple TVs (at least in the US or Canada) with the ability to access the network and purchase subscriptions. The subscription-based WWE network allows users to sign up for service directly within the Apple TV app using an iTunes account. The company notes that subscriptions purchased through Apple TV are “billed as a single charge of $59.99 (plus applicable tax) for the six month subscription period.” The launch of the new channel on Apple TV follows rumors of an Apple partnership that started after the company handed out WWE branded Apple TVs at its launch event last month. There were other reports that claimed the Apple TV launch was being held up by Apple’s request to take a 50% cut of subscriptions, but it appears that report was either inaccurate or the WWE and Apple have been able to work out an agreement since.

The WWE app for iPhone and iPad was also updated today with support for the new network features and more.

Apple has added a ton of new content to the Apple TV in past months with the most recent additions including Redbull TV, Bloomberg TV, Watch ABC, Crackle, and KorTV. We reported previously that Apple is working on a new version of the Apple TV set-top-box that will bring new functionality and likely arrive sometime this year.Filed under: AAPL Company Visit 9to5Mac to find more special coverage of AAPL Company. What do you think? Why Apple's Huge Security Flaw Is So Scary

Why Apple"s Huge Security Flaw Is So Scary

- gizmodo.com

cheap iphones 1393171302 892239794

On Friday, Apple quietly released iOS 7.0.6, explaining in a brief release note that it fixed a bug in which "an attacker with a privileged network position may capture or modify data in sessions protected by SSL/TLS." That"s the understated version. Another way to put it? Update your iPhone right now.

Oh, and by the way, OS X has the same issues—except there"s no fix out yet.

If you understand what that release note meant in full, chances are you were first in line for the iOS update. If it reads like deleted scene from Sneakers, here"s what it means for you and your Apple devices.

What Is SSL?

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, and it"s what helps ensure that communication between your browser and your favorite websites" servers remains private and secure. TLS, or Transport Layer Security, is a more recent protocol that does essentially the same. In brief, SSL/TLS is a cryptographic key that lets a browser and a server know they are who they say they are, a secret digital handshake that keeps your financial information safe when you make an Amazon payment or log into wellsfargo.com.

This all happens in the background; your only direct interaction with SSL/TLS is when you notice the lock icon in your search bar has clamped shut. That means you"ve got a direct, private, secure line.

The Apple bug in question—which, again, has been patched in iOS but not yet in OS X—means that Safari or whatever else can"t actually know for sure if the servers it"s talking to are who they say they are. Which leaves you and everything you transmit over the web vulnerable to a Man in the Middle attack.

What"s a Man in the Middle Attack?

A Man in the Middle Attack, which we"ll call MitM from here for brevity"s sake, is basically high-tech eavesdropping. An MitM attacker intercepts the communication between your browser and a site, monitoring, recording, seeing everything that transpires between you.

As Apple continues development of iWatch, Samsung releases two new second-gen Gear smartwatches

- 9to5mac.com

Over the past year, many signs have emerged that Apple is working an iWatch centered around health and fitness features. The company has made a plethora of hires in the health field recently, and our sources have said that the device is already well into development. Samsung, on the other hand, albeit to incredibly poor reviews, released its Galaxy Gear smartwatch just five months ago. This evening, the Korean company has taken the wraps off of not one, but two new smartwatches: the Gear 2 and the Gear 2 Neo.  The difference between the two models is the lack of a camera on the Gear Neo. As rumored earlier this month, both of the models have ditched Android in favor of Samsung’s Tizen operating system.

According to Samsung, the switch to Tizen will offer many improvements to the end-user. First off, Tizen is much less power intensive, which means battery life has improved to 2-3 days, according to Samsung—much better than the one day life given by the original Gear. Tizen will also offer an ”enriched application ecosystem” to the user.

This New App Wants to Fight Your Parking Tickets For You

- gizmodo.com

smartphone 1393048898 1626944237 S

It"s happened to all of us. You get back to your car after a delicious brunch or productive visit to the bookstore only to find a demonic little slip of paper tucked under your windshield wiper. "But the meter was broken!" you think. "I"m going to contest this!" you say to yourself. No, you"re not.

Contesting parking tickets is a huge pain in the ass. But Fixed plans to make it easier. Unlike the old fashioned way of contesting which requires printing stuff on paper and putting it in a mailbox and other complicated, archaic tasks, Fixed just needs a photo of the ticket and the violation code. With that, Fixed will tell you the general percentage of that type of ticket gets overturned and give you a list of excuses you can pick from. If you decide to contest it, the app just needs a little additional photographic evidence and to digital signature to slap on your letter. That"s it.

S

I know what you"re thinking: How the hell does an iPhone app deal with the courts? The short answer is: It doesn"t. Fixed actually employs a team of lawyers that review each case and take care of the paperwork. If you win, you"ll have to pay Fixed 25 percent of what you would"ve paid for the ticket because this isn"t a charity. Still, that"s it 75 percent less than the cost of sucking it up and paying the fine. But also 25 percent more than doing it yourself.

Fixed will launch next week in San Francisco, where 1.5 million citations are given out every year. Of those, only 5 percent are contested, but of that 5 percent, some 30 percent get overturned. If you"re lazy, this is could be a cheaper option to help you keep it up.

Unless you"re an Android user. No word on when that app is coming out. [CNN]

iTunes Connect update brings modernized look, sales breakdowns by category, region and more

- 9to5mac.com

Sales data redacted.

Apple today updated the Sales and Trends section of iTunes Connect, giving developers more detailed information about the origin of their apps’ sales as well as a modernized visual style.

The new update answers many of the issues developers have raised in recent years about the opaqueness of the App Store sales process. For instance, developers can now separate out sales by territory, platform, of purchase and category. This means that developers can get a better idea of how customers are finding their apps in the store. In the example above, you can see that the app was mainly found through the ‘Games’ category, with exposure in the ‘Entertainment’ category accounting for only a small fraction of total sales.

Opening of first Apple Store in Brazil draws large crowds despite high prices

- 9to5mac.com

Around 1,700 people attended the opening of Apple’s first retail store in Brazil, in the popular Village Mall in a suburb of Rio de Janeiro – despite steep import tariffs meaning prices 80 percent higher than in the USA.

As the LA Times observes, a 16GB iPhone 5s sells for the equivalent of $1,174 in Brazil, compared to $649 in the U.S.

We first told you the store was planned all the way back in 2012, learning the the approximate opening date in October last year. Apple began teasing the opening last month before announcing the opening date.

To avoid the high tariffs imposed on imported goods, Apple has been working with Foxconn since 2011 to set up manufacturing or assembly plants in the country.

This iQi Hack Shows Why Apple Hasn’t Bothered With Wireless Charging

- techcrunch.com

iphone accessories 1392507135 1553586398 iQi is a hardware add-on that brings the tech Apple hasn’t — wireless charging (using the Qi standard) — to your iPhone without the need to put it in a bulky case. Think of it as akin to Bill Gates’ quest for sensation enhancing graphene condoms. Or, er, having some cake and eating it.The slender iQi gizmo is designed to work with soft cases, including Apple’s leather iPhone 5 sleeve, so you don’t have to compromise the overall look of your iPhone just to be able to wirelessly charge it. Although, once this phone-hugging gizmo is installed, there will be a slight bump on your phone’s rear, i.e. where the case has to swell to accommodate its wireless-charge providing passenger.

Visually, this is an all-but imperceptible bump if you’re using Apple’s leather sleeve, but it’s a bit more sticky-outy when paired with some soft plastic cases. The slight swelling does mean the handset won’t now sit entirely flat on a table or other flat surface.

Blackberry Messenger for iOS adds voice calls, one-touch file-sharing and more

- 9to5mac.com

Version 2.0 of BBM for iOS app now allows free voice calls to BBM contacts, as well as a range of other new features that include one-touch file-sharing, Dropbox integration, location-sharing, 50-person BBM groups and interest channels.

Today, we’re excited to be adding those great new features and more to BBM that users on iPhone, Android and BlackBerry** can enjoy. When the update becomes available later today, these new features will give you more ways to chat and share than ever before on BBM.

Voice calling is supported on both wifi and mobile data. Note that while voice calls don’t incur any direct charges, as with other forms of VoIP calling you’ll eat into any data allowance you have.

Full details of the new features from the Blackberry blog below …

BBM Voice

One of the things we’re most excited about is bringing BBM Voice to iPhone and Android users. With BBM Voice you can make free calls* to BBM contacts anywhere in the world using your Wi-Fi® or data connection. When a BBM contact is available for a BBM Voice call you’ll see a green icon in the top right hand corner of your chat. To call them, simply touch the green icon and your call will be connected.

BBM Channels

Channels lets users chat with other BBM users about topics that interest them. Customers can join channels about a range of topics from products, hobbies and sports to entertainment, fashion, cars and more. Channels can be created by brands, businesses and BBM users alike and are a great way to communicate directly and immediately with people who share common interests in the broader BBM community. By posting to their channel, channel owners immediately reach their subscribers with a message that can spark discussions.

Location Sharing powered by Glympse

We’ve all been in situations where we’re running late, meeting up with friends, or trying to find someone at a concert. Location sharing powered by Glympse is a great way to share your live location for a specific amount of time. Choose how long you want to share your location for by setting the timer – when the timer runs out your location is private again. Now you see me…now you don’t!

Pictures, Voice notes, attachments and more

With this new version of BBM there’s more to chat about because you can quickly share a pic, voice note or file with your contacts. Snap a photo or pick one from your gallery; touch and hold to send a voice note; send a calendar event or contact.

Dropbox Integration

With Dropbox built in to BBM, you can send a file from your personal cloud directly to a BBM contact. On the receiving end, save the file directly to your smartphone or add it to your Dropbox account.

New Emoticons

This new release of BBM also includes 100 great new emoticons that you can use to bring some fun to your chats. With so many new emoticons, we’ve decided to dedicate a post to helping you discover them all. Check that out here.

Larger BBM Groups

You’ve been asking for larger BBM Groups and we’ve heard you loud and clear. This new version of BBM now includes 50-person BBM Groups so you can get more of your friends, family or team in on the action.

Thanks, Ade

2014 to be a big year for wearables, with 17M devices expected to be sold

- 9to5mac.com

Market analyst Canalys reports that 1.6M fitness bands and smartwatches combined were sold in the second half of last year, and is predicting that more than 17M devices will be sold this year, driven largely by forecast sales of 8M smartwatches.

Though currently a relatively small market serving fitness enthusiasts, wearable bands represent a massive opportunity in the medical and wellness segment. 2014 will be the year that wearables become a key consumer technology, as the smart band segment is estimated to reach 8 million annual shipments. Canalys estimates that this number will grow to over 23 million units by 2015, and over 45 million by 2017 …

Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty recently forecast that the iWatch could generate $17.5 billion in the first twelve months.

We’ve recently run a series of pieces about what is known about the iWatch project so far. iOS 8 appears to be gearing up for a major focus on fitness and health, presumably with the iWatch in mind. Recent Apple hires include a sleep researcher and physiologists, with a large and high-calibre team believed to be working on the project.

It appears likely that the iWatch is intended as an iPhone accessory rather than a standalone device, with data from it accessed via a new Healthbook app.

Apple’s supplier responsibility report highlights progress on working conditions, boosts focus on environment

- 9to5mac.com

Apple’s eighth annual Supplier Responsibility Progress Report highlights the progress made on reducing child labor and enforcing working hour limits, and shows a significant increase in the environmental standards Apple’s suppliers are expected to meet.

The number of cases of underage workers fell from 106 last year to 11 this year. Compliance with Apple’s requirement of a maximum working week of 60 hours hit 95 percent, with 97 percent meeting the requirement of at least one day off a week. Apple reported that the average working week of a supply chain employee was less than 50 hours …

Apple has also increased the environmental standards it requires suppliers to uphold. Several issues previously considered less serious breaches – such as disposing of hazardous waste at non-approved facilities – have been upgraded to unacceptable violations. Apple increased by 50 percent the number of environmental audits it conducted.

The company confirmed that all of its tantalum suppliers – a key metal used in the manufacture of electronic equipment – have been independently verified to be using so-called conflict-free sources, in contrast to those believed to be funding wars in central Africa. Apple also added a new program designed to reduce water usage by its suppliers.

Could this be our first look at the much larger iPhone 6?

- 9to5mac.com

Sonny Dickson has posted images today which claim to show the casing for the next generation iPhone. The metal shell, which closely resembled both the industrial design of the current iPod touch and iPad Air, appears to be of unibody construction. While it’s impossible to verify the legitimacy of these images at this time, they provide an interesting look at what Apple might be planning.

We’ve been hearing reports that the next iPhone will feature a larger, sapphire crystal display, and these images support those rumors, sporting what looks like much larger casing. The report also hints that the current iPhone 5s may stick around, but be manufactured out of cheaper materials, alongside both 4.7 and 5.5″ iPhone models. But what does that mean for this shell?

Update: We’ve got lots more images in the full gallery below:

Americans officially living in post-PC world, spending more time using mobile apps & web

- 9to5mac.com

According to new data from Nielsen, Americans now spend more time using mobile web and apps on their smartphones than they do online on their PCs, reports Engadget.

That shift toward mobile is affecting how many spend their free time. Americans spent an average of 34 hours per month using mobile apps and browsers in 2013; that’s more time than they spent online with their PCs, which chewed up 27 hours …

TV viewing is also declining, though people still spend more than twice as long watching live TV as accessing the net.

The figures show that almost two-thirds of Americans now own a smartphone, at 65 percent, up from just 44 percent two years ago – with the average American owning four ‘digital devices,’ which include TVs, computers, tablets and smartphones.

Next iPhone reportedly sports a larger screen and sapphire crystal display

Apple is preparing to release not one, but two new versions of the iPhone in September, according to the South China Morning Post. Each version will ship with a larger display than the iPhone 5s, coming in at a whopping 4.7″ and 5.5″, respectively. The displays are said to have a pixel density of 441ppi, much higher than the current 326ppi found in the iPhone 5 and later.

The report also states that both displays will be made from sapphire crystal, which fits with recent reports that Apple is planning to have its latest sapphire plant in Mesa, AZ operational in February for a “critical” product component. The displays will also be flat, not curved, the Post says.

Double debunk: bezel-free iPhones, sapphire iWatch only?

- 9to5mac.com

Two Apple rumors have popped up today originating from the KoreaHerald and Chinese media outlet MyDrivers (via Gforgames) that claim to share new details about upcoming next-generation iPhones. The first report from MyDrivers claims that industry sources from Taiwan say Apple won’t move to sapphire for the next-gen iPhone display. It cites cost and limited production capacity, but claims Apple is prototyping an “iPhone 6” with sapphire display anyway. The biggest problem with this report— apart from the site’s track record— is that Apple recently acquired enough equipment for its new Arizona sapphire plant to produce 100-200 million 5-inch iPhone displays a year. While the report adds that Apple will likely use sapphire for the rumored iWatch display, it’s certainly preparing its Arizona plant to produce much beyond just that product.

Next we have the KoreaHerald report claiming that both Samsung and Apple are working on bezel-less displays and that Apple is prototyping one that includes a fingerprint sensor:

The source said that Samsung’s top rival Apple is also testing a similar prototype sporting a bezel-less screen that features a fingerprint scanner.

Apple of course prototypes various designs before deciding on final specs for a next-generation device. Even if it is prototyping a bezel-less design, with the iPhone likely still around 8 months out, the prototype might never see the light of day. We’ve already had reports from much more reputable publications that Apple is testing displays at 4.7 and 5.7-inches, and then 4.8 to 6-inches in size, and then curved, and that was even before the iPhone 5S shipped. Clearly the company is toying with several ideas, but today’s reports don’t hold much weight in terms of determining what we’ll likely see in the next generation device eight months from now.Filed under: AAPL Company, Tech Industry Visit 9to5Mac to find more special coverage of AAPL Company and Tech Industry. What do you think?
