Apple finally brings two-factor authentication to iCloud website (updated)

- 9to5mac.com

It appears Apple has started rolling out support for two-factor authentication on its iCloud.com website. The feature initially rolled out to the Apple ID management website in the United States and then in several other countries soon after.

Under the new setup on iCloud.com, users can only access Find My iPhone without verifying their identities. Mail, Contacts, and other “apps” require you to enter a passcode that can be texted to any phone number or sent to the Find My iPhone app on properly configured devices.

Apple’s annual Back to School promotion to start tomorrow

Retro Apple Store Back to School display

As we reported two weeks ago, Apple’s annual Back to School promotion will begin tomorrow, according to sources. The program will be similar to last year’s offering, which provided $100 Mac App Store gift cards alongside Mac purchases and $50 cards with iPhone and iPad purchases. Apple will be re-decorating its stores overnight with a new education theme to go along with the new promotion. Earlier today, Apple unveiled upcoming iTunes U updates for the iPad, and the timing seems like anything but a coincidence.

Following Apple’s announcement that it has ceased software development of the Aperture professional photo editing software for Mac and the development of iPhoto on iOS and OS X, Adobe has issued a statement. The digital software company is promoting its Lightroom and Creative Cloud photo editing and management products for the web, iOS, and OS X:

Today, Apple announced they will no longer be developing Aperture in light of their new photography app for OS X. Opinion: Why the new $50 iPod pricing tiers probably won’t make it to Apple’s lucrative iPhones and iPads

- 9to5mac.com

Earlier today Apple made a significant change to the iPod touch lineup. Aside from a few small hardware improvements to the lowest-end model, the company has—for the first time—started to close the price gap between storage tiers.

When the iPod touch first launched, there was a $70 gap between the 8 GB and 16 GB models. Jumping from 16 GB to 32 GB would cost an extra $100. However, with the launch of the second-generation iPod touch, the gap between the lowest two tiers increased to $100, and it’s stayed there ever since.

Until today, that is. Now, for the first time since the debut of the first iPhone in 2007, there is a mere $50 gap between all three capacities of an iOS device. Is this a sign that Apple is ready to give in and drop the ridiculous $100 pricing tiers on future big ticket premium devices when the actual Flash storage and controllers only cost Apple a few bucks? Or will we continue to see a $100 price gap between iPhones when the next-gen model is revealed this fall?

Walmart set to permanently discount iPhone 5s to $99, 5c to $29 tomorrow

- 9to5mac.com

Engadget reports that Walmart is preparing to make significant cuts to its iPhone pricing tomorrow. According to a Walmart spokesman, the iPhone 5s will be available on a two-year contract for only $99, down from the previous price of $149. The iPhone 5c, on the other hand, will be only $29 on a contract, down $20 from the previous $49.

Both of these prices apply to the 16 GB models, but there isn’t any word on the prices for the 32 GB or 64 GB devices, though they will also see cuts. The new prices will reportedly only be available in-store, not online. It doesn’t look like any other Apple products will see similar changes, though the larger iPod touch models did just see a price drop earlier today.Filed under: AAPL Company Tagged: iPhone, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5s, Price, Walmart Visit 9to5Mac to find more special coverage of AAPL Company, iPhone, and iPhone 5s.What do you think? Costco makes up with Apple, starts selling iPhone and iPad online at discounts of up to $120

- 9to5mac.com

It seems Costco has once again started selling specific Apple products several years after it dropped the company’s wares over Apple’s decision to not let the retailer carry the iPad. Not every model, carrier, capacity, or color are represented in Coscto’s stock, and all of the devices are only available online (except for the T-Mobile versions, which aren’t available online at all).

The 16 GB iPhone 5s on AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon will run you only $77.99 through Costco, saving you about $120. As noted above, the T-Mobile model is only available through “select Costco wireless kiosks.” All of the color and carrier combinations are available except for one: the gold iPhone on T-Mobile.

The iPhone offering is rounded out by a a blue AT&T iPhone 5c, also only available in 16 GB, for $99.99.

On the tablet side of things, the 16 GB iPad mini is available on Verizon at $419.99, and the iPad Air (again, only on Verizon) can be yours for $519.99. Like with the iPhone, the 16 GB T-Mobile versions of each iPad model can only be purchased at certain Costco wireless kiosks. Sprint and AT&T iPads are nowhere to be found at the moment.

It doesn’t appear that the company is offering any higher-capacity models of either device at this time, and the iPad color selection seems to be restricted. The only silver iPad for sale is the Verizon iPad Air, while the others are all limited to space grey, including the T-Mobile variant of the Air.Filed under: iOS Devices Tagged: costco, discount, iPad, iPhone For more news on iOS Devices, iPhone, and iPad continue reading at 9to5Mac.What do you think? At this point in time, there’s no official news on Apple’s plans to include Touch ID with the upcoming second-generation iPad Air, but it would definitely make sense.

In the video below, the iPad Air is compared to this rumored “iPad 6″ dummy showing very small changes between the two. At first glance, the dummy appears to be thinner than the current generation iPad Air, but as we’ve seen in the past these dummy units aren’t exactly 100 percent accurate…

iPhone manufacturing partner Foxconn is in the process of hiring 100,000 new workers in order to ramp up iPhone 6 production, according to a new report from Taiwanese Economic Daily. Another iPhone manufacturer, Pegatron, is also said to be ramping up hiring in anticipation of the new smartphone.

Hiring frenzies like this are not uncommon as new iPhone models prepare to enter production, but in the case of Foxconn the figure represents a new record number of jobs.

According to the report, Foxconn is reportedly responsible for producing 70% of iPhone 6 orders. The report claims that the device will enter mass production in July. Leaked dummies have already given us an idea of what the phone will look like, including the LCD for the rumored 5.5-inch model.

Here"s how weather forecasts in the United States work: The National Weather Service attaches devices that measure pressure, temperature and humidity to weather balloons that are launched, twice a day, from 69 locations in the US. This is the way it has been since, well, the 1930s.

Now, the Weather Service is finally getting better data by using sensors already present in hundreds of aircraft as they fly across the country. To get this data, it has entered into a partnership with Southwest Airlines. This, according to Bloomberg, should create a more accurate forecast.

Not only will this benefit hundreds of other industries, better weather predictions could improve flight delays, which currently cost airlines about $8 million a year.

These sensors are less common than you would imagine. Less than 1% of commercial aircraft in the US have them, reports Quartz. But seriously, if Apple can put a goddamn barometer in the next iPhone, how hard can it be to put these sensors in airplanes? [Bloomberg, Quartz]

Automatic 2.0 for iPhone brings new design & fuel gauge support to the smart driving assistant

- 9to5mac.com

Automatic, the smart driving assistant that connects your car to your iPhone, is updating its accompanying iOS app today with a new design and new features. The new design, Automatic says, is meant to be “lighter, faster and more modern”. The gray header, for example, has been replaced with a white field displaying the current and past driving stats collected by the app.

In addition to the refreshed look and feel, Automatic 2.0 for iPhone brings new features to Automatic Link users. With the update, Automatic will offer fuel level information and warnings on supported cards. While this feature only works on supported cars, in many cases it goes beyond dashboard fuel gauges as Automatic can present an estimate of miles possible to be driven before running out of fuel based on previous driving behaviors.

Automatic will gain the ability to send a push notification to your iPhone if you would like to be notified of low fuel levels before your dashboard warns you. Automatic says this notification can be set based on a miles to empty amount or at markers like a quarter tank of fuel.

The company says only about half of cars using Automatic have diagnostic ports that support the fuel features, though, so check the make and model of your car on their website first to know if you should expect support.

Apple has today announced a replacement program for some European iPhone USB adapters. The company says that it has identified that some USB adapters bundled with iPhones (as well as sold separately) may overheat and ‘pose a safety risk’. The adapter shipped with European models of the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s from October 2009 to September 2012.

Affected adapters feature the Model ‘A1300′ designation, found on the bottom of the unit as pictured above. Apple will replace the power adapters for free, at its dedicated replacement portal website. A full country list is below.

iOS 8 builds in the technologies Apple needs for an iWatch

- 9to5mac.com

iOS 8 adds several important enhancements to the iPhone and iPad, such as improved notifications, health-tracking, and a more advanced camera application, but the new operating system’s most significant feature may be the groundwork technologies for a future Apple wearable device that integrates deeply with the iPhone.

No matter if it is called the “iWatch,” “iBand,” “iPod,” or something else entirely, a wrist-worn Apple wearable device will likely be announced in October, and the software it will run will set the scope of its capabilities. Besides the new functionality for the iPhone and iPad, iOS 8 includes many new wireless protocols, applications, and features that open the door to several capabilities for a wearable device.

Let’s take a look at how each major iOS 8 feature plays directly into Apple’s ambitions for a wearable computer, below.

Calvin Harris: Summer

- gizmodo.com

[embedded content]

Not to be totally cliche, but I"ve been listening to Calvin Harris"s song, Summer, pretty much for all of this summer that isn"t even technically here yet. Hey, the track sounds like it should be listened to by a pool or on a rooftop or somewhere as long as the sun is shining and the air is north of 70 degrees.

Calvin Harris, in general, makes songs you just want to get down to. No cares! No worries! It"s actual summer. Kid summer, not adult summer. You have three months off, you don"t have to put that power suit on tomorrow morning, and it"s hot. And people are hot. Party. Just party. Swim in a pool. Shirk your responsibilities. Meet someone. Go to the beach. Dance your way down a street. Crack a fire hydrant. Sing along with your iPhone even though you"re wearing headphones and the street is crawling with people. Wear cheap sunglasses. Lose those cheap sunglasses. Sweat and like it. Wear a tank top. Go out on a Thursday. Drive with the windows down. It"s summer vacation. And yeah, that"s totally cliche. But that"s how this song makes me feel.

Pocket Informant 4.0 released with iBeacon support, redesigned month view, and much more

- 9to5mac.com

The free Pocket Informer app for iPhone and iPad has been updated today with a host of new features, including improved location support, iBeacon compatibility, a revamped month view, and much more.

The new update allows users to accomplish new types location-based tasks, such as automatically activating specific calendar filters based on location. iBeacon support allows more precise location-based reminders and alerts. The app can also edit Apple’s native location-based Reminders.

Improvements to repeated calendar events have also been made, allowing users to create new types of recurring events, and a redesigned month view provides a more complete overview of the weeks ahead. A new travel mode allows users to enter future travel plans so that the app can automatically do time zone conversions based on where the user will be on the date of that event.

Pocket Informant is available for free on the App Store, but many features are locked behind in-app purchases ranging from $.99 to $14.99. The complete list of changes in this update can be found below.

What’s New in Version 4.0

Informant 4.0 is a MAJOR FREE UPGRADE. We’ve added exciting new features that you won’t find in ANY other calendaring app as well as ton of other additions and improvements across the board.

Here some highlights of what’s new:

◉ NEW! TravelAssist™ is completely unique approach to automating Time Zone handling while traveling. Simply tell Informant about your travel plans and after that, all new events scheduled between those dates will automatically default to the proper time zone. Likewise, while you are traveling, all new events scheduled outside your travel dates will default to your “home” time zone (instead of your “current” travel time zone).

◉ NEW! iBeacon Support. If you haven’t heard about iBeacons, check out Apple’s website to learn more. In short, iBeacons allow you to create location notifications at a much more precise location than GPS can give you. Here are a few things Informant can do with iBeacons:

◉ Informant can act as an iBeacon itself! This allows you to set Informant to remind you to do something next time you are near a specific friend, co-worker or family member.

◉ Pre-order hardware Informant iBeacons on our website today! You can place these small, convenient hardware beacons in your car, a room in your house, a conference room, your desk at work or anywhere else where you’d like to have Informant remind you to do something.

◉ LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

◉ Calendar Filters can now be automatically tied to a specific location (including a specific iBeacon)! Create a saved calendar filter for home and one for work. Then set Informant to automatically change between them based on you current location.

◉ Task locations notifications now have a radius that you can now conveniently adjust in the map view

◉ We now support editing Apple Location Reminders directly in Informant

◉ YOU’LL LOVE THE NEW MONTH VIEW

◉ Month View is now a vertically scrolling “Rolling Month View”

◉ Double-tap on a day to slide up a graphical day view

◉ Timed multi-day events now appear similar to “All Day” events in the Month View

◉ iPad now uses the “slide up” detail view instead of popovers when tapping on a day

◉ YOU’LL LOVE ALL THE OTHER VIEWS AS WELL

◉ We added support for iOS 7 Dynamic Text size and we added additional large text size options

◉ Details of events & tasks are now displayed in a convenient popover

◉ Informant now opens the contact card when you tap on a Birthday event

◉ Event conflict detection can be enabled/disabled per calendar

◉ GET HOLIDAY AND OTHER CALENDARS: We’ve partnered with SchedJoules to offer you a huge selection of calendars that you can purchase from their calendar store (integrated into Informant): everything from Name Days, Holidays, Phases of the Moon, Sports Calendars, and more.

◉ SEARCH MORE: Informant now searches the past 15 years and all future Apple Events in addition to all Pocket Informant native events.

◉ PRINT MORE: You can now print individual events, tasks, or any task list that is available in the Task View.

◉ SMART TITLE: Informant now offers to auto-complete Template names or Contacts as you type the title of a new event or task.

◉ NEW RECURRENCE OPTION: You can now create recurring events on the “5th of the month”. Finally.

◉ BACKUPS: Daily backups are now completely automatic!

◉ MUCH MUCH MORE: We have a more complete list of what’s new on our website.

By the way, did we mention this is a FREE upgrade to all of our amazing Informant Premium customers? If you haven’t purchased Informant Premium yet, it’s a great time to upgrade. And if you have – thank you so much for your support and don’t forget to tell your friends about your favorite calendaring app!!

As always, we recommend you back up your data before a major upgrade of any app (Informant will do this for you automatically). In the several months leading up to Apple’s 2014 Worldwide Developers Conference, we reported on several features on tap for iOS 8, the new iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch operating system, and OS X Yosemite. Many of the features we reported on were announced last week: improved messaging, revamped notifications, various user-interface enhancements, indoor mapping, iCloud improvements for end-users and developers, Shazam in Siri, Voice Memos improvements, the redesigned Mac interface, multi-resolution mode for Xcode app testing, and of course, health-tracking integration. But some of the reporting did not become official last week. Namely, the Healthbook name, various improvements to Apple’s controversial mapping software, and a split-screen iPad multitasking mode.

Let’s go through each feature one-by-one.

After trademark dispute, Mexican carriers can no longer use ‘iPhone’ name in ads

- 9to5mac.com

Earlier this year, Apple (sort of) won a trademark lawsuit to Mexican telecommunications company iFone over the use of the phonetically-identical “iPhone” brand. The iFone trademark was originally filed in 2003, and in 2009 the company filed a suit against Apple. In March 2013 the case ended with the decision that Apple had in fact not infringed on the mark.

The logic behind the ruling was based on the difference in the two companies’ markets. While iFone sells telecommunications services, Apple sells smartphones (but not actual telecommunications service). Because of this, Apple would be allowed to continue using the name.

We say Apple only “sort of” won the case here, becuase unfortunately, the Cupertino company’s Mexican carrier partners were caught in the legal crossfire, as demonstrated by a ruling today that placed the burden of the infringement squarely on them [translation].
