Latest iPhone 6 concept based on Japanese sketches looks more persuasive

- 9to5mac.com

Martin Hajek has been busy this week: after iPhoneclub commissioned him to create concept images of an iPod Nano-inspired design of the iPhone 6, French site Nowhereelse asked him to use the Japanese sketches mentioned in that piece to create something far closer to the existing iPhone 5s design.

With many of our commentators criticizing the square corners of the previous concept, this latest one returns us to the rounded corners we know and love. More controversially, perhaps, we also see a return to the glass back. More images below the fold …

BlackBerry wins injunction against Ryan Seacrest’s iPhone keyboard in patent dispute

- 9to5mac.com

The Typo iPhone case has been blocked from sale by BlackBerry, according to a report from Reuters. The smartphone maker sued over the design of the case earlier this year, saying that it infringed on several of the company’s patents and its “iconic” keyboard design. The case is designed to add a BlackBerry-like keyboard to the iPhone 5 and 5s.

The injunction blocks the sale of the Typo, which is made by a company co-founded by TV personality Ryan Seacrest. A San Fransisco federal judge ruled that BlackBerry had established a “likelihood” that the Typo case infringed on its patents, while the case maker was unable to prove that it had not.

SAN FRANCISCO — The New York Times is launching a new iPhone app on April 2nd in the App Store. Called NYT Now, the app will aggregate news from the Times as well as other publications. All stories will be handpicked by a 10-person team of Times editors and complied in daily reports.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because the Yahoo News Digest app is based around the same model. The difference with NYT Now is that it’s a paid service with the full backing of one of the most influential papers in the world.

Unlike most news aggregators that rely on computer algorithms to surface content, everything in NYT Now will be curated by an editorial staff. There will be morning and afternoon collections of stories, and the Times tells me you’ll know what you’ve missed when you come back to the app throughout the day.

But has Apple really missed out on virtual-reality?

In fact, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that Apple has been investigating this area for the better part of a decade: well before Oculus Rift appeared on Kickstarter.

Twitter Improves Search And Discovery In Latest App Update

- cultofmac.com

iphone tips 1395842547 1622021889

Twitter rolled out a new version of their Android and iOS apps today, improving on search, discovery, and notifications. In both apps, search has become increasingly easier thanks to spelling suggestions and related searches in search results. Username autocomplete in search has also been added, making finding someone extremely fast and less cumbersome. iPhone users will enjoy additional search improvements with a tap of the search box in Discover allowing them to see their most recent queries, as well as the ability to go directly to someone’s profile when searching for a username in Connect.

Using the Discover tab, Android and iOS users will be able to see Activity such as which Tweets are favorited or retweeted by the people they follow and which accounts those people follow or add to lists. Users can now tap on stories to see Tweets about a particular trend or news article, from which they can read, reply, retweet or favorite related Tweets.

Last but not least, Twitter has added push notifications for interactions such as when your Tweets have been retweeted, favorited, or when you have new followers. It’s up to you how “notified” you’d like to be and can change the setting at any time.

The official Twitter app for Android has remained my favorite Twitter client and I’ll have to take these improvements for a spin before deciding whether or not they are welcomed changes. iOS users can sound off in the comments to let us know how these changes have affected their experience with the app and whether or not Twitter should have left well enough alone.

Apple Sells A Whopping Half-Billion iPhones In Less Than 7 Years

- cultofmac.com

Selling a half-billion of anything is impressive, especially when you can do it in less than seven years. That’s exactly what Apple has managed to do with the iPhone.

Apple had sold 472 million iPhones in total at the end of 2013, and given analysts estimates of 38-42 million units sold this current quarter, the 500 million milestone has most certainly been reached.

As noted by Forbes, we won’t know for a fact that 500 million units have been sold until Apple’s Q2 2014 earnings come out next month. A record 51 million iPhones were sold during the last holiday quarter, and Apple has managed to sell more iPhones each year since the original model launched in 2007.

Here’s a chart, via CNBC, that shows the consistent rise in iPhone sales each year:

Someone is happy with iPhone 5c sales: Pegatron posts a 22 percent rise in earnings

- 9to5mac.com

Photo: Associated Press

Pegatron, Apple’s main supplier for the iPhone 5c, has reported 22 percent year-on-year earnings growth, citing mobile products as the main source of the increase. KGI Securities analyst Angela Hsiang told the WSJ that Apple provides 40 percent of the company’s business.

Pegatron has long been a secondary iPhone supplier, but was last year given the lead in production of the iPhone 5c, which it manufactures along with the iPad Mini. The company did not provide any breakdown in earnings between the two products.

Although the earnings increase is a big rise, the company’s operating margin is testament to the tough deals Apple strikes with its suppliers: Pegatron’s operating margin increased from 1.6 percent to 1.9 percent.

Pegatron is expected to share production of the iPhone 6 with Apple’s lead supplier Foxconn.

Starbucks releases iOS 7-friendly iPhone app with a few new tricks

- 9to5mac.com

We’ve already seen Starbucks show off a new way to pay and tip your barista in the long-awaited update to its iPhone app it previously announced, and today it is finally available and features a brand new design for iOS 7 when buying your latte.

Previously, the Starbucks app featured a number of various tabs on the bottom navigation bar, but the updated version has been dramatically simplified to focus on three main sections under the headers Pay, Stores, and Gift.

Reward member profiles, messages, and Pick of the Week content is now featured in a clean view with the app’s new tip feature as well.

The update also comes with a new icon to represent the refreshed design of the app.

However, the update does remove customized drink saving within the app. Starbucks advises you screenshot the view of your customized drink to save it if you use this feature.

Apple will announce 4M more iPhone sales than supply chain data suggests, says Morgan Stanley

- 9to5mac.com

Photo: digitaltrends.com

Predictions of disappointing Q2 iPhone sales could be unduly pessimistic, says Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty. She expects Apple to announce that it shipped 42M iPhones in the first quarter of the year (Apple’s fiscal Q2), rather than the 38M suggested by supply chain analysis, reports Business Insider. This would represent year-on-year growth of more than 4.5M handsets.

Huberty says that the supply chain may work in overdrive during the holiday quarter to generate extra product, and then ease back in the March quarter, thus giving an unreliable read out on sales.

Huberty bases her estimate on a method which sounds eccentric but has an excellent track-record …

Huberty’s numbers are pulled from the AlphaWise Smartphone Tracker, which uses analysis of web searches. While this sounds bizarre, the tracker has proven more accurate that the Wall Street consensus estimates for three out of the last four quarters.

Apple seeds new OS X 10.9.3 beta & iTunes 11.1.6 beta to employees

- 9to5mac.com

Following its latest seed of OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 beta (build 13D17) to developers, Apple has just pushed out a newer pre-release version of the 10.9.3 beta to employees alongside a pre-release version of iTunes 11.1.6 beta.

The new pre-release of OS X 10.9.3 (build 13D19) is available to employees and doesn’t introduce any major changes since the latest beta build seeded to developers. The last beta release asked developers to focus on testing graphics and audio drivers.

iTunes 11.1.6 brings fixes for the latest 10.9.3 builds and “restores the ability to sync contacts and calendar information to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from your Mac running OS X 10.9.3.” The ability to sync contacts and calendar data to an iOS device from a Mac was removed previously (to many complaints) but remained possible through iCloud syncing.

The final release of 10.9.3 could bring at least one new notable feature for users: support for driving 4K displays at Retina resolution and 60Hz output from 2013 MacBook Pros.Filed under: AAPL Company, Mac Tagged: 10.9.3, beta, calendar, contact, employees, iTunes 11.1.6, Mac, mavericks, OS X, release, Seed, sync Continue reading more about AAPL Company, Mac, and OS X at 9to5Mac.What do you think? iPhone 5c not a hit in China either, would a rumored 8GB model help?

- 9to5mac.com

The South China Morning Post is reporting that the iPhone 5c, created by Apple to target growth markets like China, has hit only a 2 percent share of all iOS devices after four months, in contrast to the iPhone 5s with a 12 percent share and the original iPhone 5 with around 15 percent …

The bulk of the iOS market in China is still made up of older devices that have been imported through grey channels, but the 5c was expected to prove popular among those looking for a new iPhone compatible with China Mobile’s network. However, data from China’s largest app analytics company suggests that most buyers have been willing to pay the premium for the 5s.

While Apple doesn’t release breakdowns of iPhone sales by model, it’s widely believed that 5c sales were significantly below the company’s expectations, with Tim Cook stating that “the mix was something very different than we thought” – though the fact that it has seemingly driven up sales of the 5s means that it may, ironically, have been a good move.

A separate rumor suggests that Apple is launching an 8GB model of the iPhone 5c tomorrow – in Germany, of all places. The rumor says that it will be available on the O2 network, and an Engadget reader sent in apparent confirmation in the form of a packaging detail:

‘Asphaleia’ Jailbreak Tweak Empowers Touch ID To Lock Any App

Most of the apps on my iPhone that I would want password protected already are, but what happens when I want an added layer of security? That’s where Asphaleia comes in, a new jailbreak tweak from the same designer behind the Auxo multitasking switcher for iOS 6.

Not only does Asphaleia let you use Touch ID on the iPhone 5s to secure any app, but it adds other important security options to iOS with a level of polish that is unprecedented for a jailbreak tweak of its kind.

While Asphaleia is probably a little overboard in terms of catering to the security paranoia some of us deal with, it’s a good example of improvements Apple could make to Touch ID in the future.

Once you install Asphaleia from Cydia, its preferences are added within the Settings app. The goal of the tweak is to give you more options for using Touch ID while also staying out of the way, which it happens to achieve quite nicely.

Why Aren’t People Freaking Out About iBeacon?

- cultofmac.com

iphone online 1394919270 273528750

The new iOS 7.1, which Apple launched this week, contained massively improved iBeacon functionality.

Among these improvements is that Apple has cancelled an element of user permission. Once you’ve installed a store’s app — say, for example, Apple’s own Apple store app — that store can put messages on your lock screen even if the app isn’t running!

I think it’s a real improvement. But I’m surprised privacy fans aren’t freaking out.

I interviewed Doug Thompson this week on my show, Tech News Today, who very clearly explained what iBeacon is and how Apple changed it. (Thompson is blogs on the BEEKn blog, which is focused on beacon technologies, design and development.) If you want a quick primer on what iBeacon is and how it’s been upgraded, I recommend my interview with him.

In a nutshell, the improvements to iBeacon fall into two categories. The first is in the area of general performance. Overall responsiveness for iBeacon is much better than before, according to developers who have tried it.

The second is in the area of permissions.

It’s a bi-product of the fact that the public doesn’t understand the magnitude of how iBeacon and beacon technology will change human culture that the techno-panic crowd isn’t freaking out about the update.

In the past, iBeacon was opt-in. Now, it’s opt-out. In the previous system, iBeacon-enabled stores, stadiums and museus were required to ask permission of the user for iBeacon access to their phones. Now, they no longer need that permission. Apple has already granted permission to the stores to access your iPhone.

You do have to install an app, though. For example, let’s say your local mall installs an iBeacon system for directions to stores, promotions, coupons and other information. Your iPhone won’t be affected by their iBeacon system unless you install the mall’s app. But once you do install the app, the app no longer needs to be running in order for the iBeacon system to interact with your phone.

So with the mall’s app not running at all, you’ll still get messages on your lock screen from the mall’s iBeacon system.

This is a huge shift for Apple. In the past, according to Thompson, an app had to be running in order to throw up messages onto the lock screen. Apple appears to be making an exception for iBeacon apps.

If you signed up for the mall’s system because you wanted to get discounts from the Gap. And later, the Gap goes out of business and is replaced by Victoria’s Secret, which also uses the mall’s iBeacon system for promotions, you’re now going to get underwear ads on your lock screen without granting any permission or even running the app.

Don’t get your panties in a bunch, though. Uninstalling the app, or re-setting the location permissions or shutting off Bluetooth will each opt you out of the mall’s iBeacon system.

You should also know that iBeacon beacons don’t actually track you or collect data from your iPhone. They can only transmit information TO your phone. They provide data about location to your iBeacon-supporting app, tell the app where you are with vastly higher precision than, say GPS or cell-tower triangulation can, and they can do it indoors. Any reporting of location, any transmission of data, any downloading of data happens through your phone’s WiFi or mobile broadband connection, controlled by the app and governed by the permissions you’ve granted.

What’s great about the new iBeacon, and it’s opt-out approach is that it should drive a lot more adoption toward iBeacon. In the past, any prospective retailer or app developer might have sifted through the details of iBeacon and found the prospect of getting people to use it daunting.

And ask yourself: How often have you, an Apple fan devoted enough to read Cult of Mac, use Apple’s iBeacon app when you’ve gone into the local Apple store. If you’re like the majority, you’ve never tried it. If you’re like one minority, you tried it once and never did again. The percentage of Apple store users who turn it on each time they go in almost certainly rounds to zero.

Under the 7.1 release, though, anyone who has installed the Apple store app will now get pinged when they go in. If Apple pings with useful or compelling information, the user will launch the app and participate.

In other words, making iBeacon opt-out for the users who have installed the app is a minimum requirement for it to have a prayer of being useful to stores and app developers.

I think the upgrade to iBeacon, and specifically the conversion of notifications from opt in to opt out is a great one. But I’m frankly surprised that privacy fans, the sort of people who falsely believed the old iBeacon was already a privacy violation, aren’t having fits about this new feature.

Google drops its Drive storage pricing significantly, puts pressure on Apple to improve iCloud prices

- 9to5mac.com

Google has just announced some new price plans for its Google Drive service. The new plans start at $1.99 for 100 GB (down from $4.99), $10 for 1 TB (down from $50) and 10 TB for $99.99. This storage is shared across Drive, Gmail and Google+ Photos.

It should be noted that Google bills customers monthly. Even so, these new price points make Apple’s iCloud storage offerings look awful in terms of value for money.

For iCloud storage, Apple currently charges $20 yearly for 15 GB, $50 yearly for 25 GB and $100 yearly for 55 GB (lumping in the free 5 gigabytes Apple gives to every user). Rather amusingly, Apple’s options do not even allow users to perform a 1:1 backup of their 64 GB and 128 GB devices — the top iCloud tier totals 55 GB of storage.

Whatever way you cut it, Apple’s prices are exorbitant in comparison to Google’s. Doing some basic arithmetic, for one gigabyte of cloud storage over a year, Google charges you 24 cents. Meanwhile, Apple charges you 1.8 dollars. This means Apple’s current rates are 7.5x more expensive than Google’s.

Get into AAPL in April, suggests analyst, anticipating soft Q2 numbers before new products kick in

- 9to5mac.com

Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair has suggested that Apple’s share price could be temporarily depressed by disappointing Q2 results in March before climbing by as much as 20 percent in response to new products in the fall, reports Barrons.

This gap between what is actually happening at Apple and investor sentiment is providing an opportunity for investors. We believe this opportunity should be taken advantage of before Apple’s next array of products hit the market, though the best time to own the stock may be in April after we get the March quarter/June guide behind us.

Blair cites several factors for expecting the stock to take a hit in March when Apple reports its earnings for its Q2 fiscal year (Q1 calendar year). Among them are the general slowdown in the saturated high-end smartphone market, continued soft demand for the iPhone 5c, overly-optimistic market forecasts for China Mobile sales and a reduction in the number of people upgrading their iPhone as they wait for the rumored larger-screen phone(s) in the fall.

The longer-term outlook is, however, excellent, believes Blair. He expects Touch ID to be rolled out across all iPhones and iPads in readiness for the launch of a mobile payment solution, and he thinks the expected larger iPhone 6 will sell well, especially in Asia.

In terms of completely new products, Blair is predicting the launch of the iWatch in September and a 12-inch display device he expects to see unveiled at WWDC, whether it is the much-rumored iPad Pro or a new 12-inch MacBook Air.

As ever, make your own decisions where investments are concerned …

Developers overwhelmingly liked the iOS 7.1 changes – how about you? [Poll]

- 9to5mac.com

Back in January, when Apple released the third beta of iOS 7.1 to developers, we asked them what they thought of a whole bunch of specific changes, and whether they preferred the iOS 7 or 7.1 versions. Developers overwhelmingly favored the changes.

You can see below how developers voted on the specific elements. We’re asking you just to give an overall thumbs-up or down to the revamped user-interface …

There were some clear no-brainers, where iOS 7.1 either added functionality or made it clearer what was going on. Examples of additional functionality included the ability to switch auto-HDR on or off for photos, choose to have wallpaper motion on or off, and add a car display to the possible restrictions in settings. Clarity was improved in things like confirmation that there have been no missed notifications and showing when auto-flash was on in the camera.

Review: Mophie’s new ‘Space Pack’ battery case is like Dropbox without the cloud and twice the power

- 9to5mac.com

For the past few weeks, I’ve been testing out Mophie’s new ‘Space Pack’ battery case with included storage that it showed off earlier this year at CES. While I’ve never used a case on my iPhone for longer than a few days, I do run out of battery more often than I’d like, and Mophie’s promise of extra storage built into the hardware sparked my interest. (Oh, and I do think the name is cool and clever…) I really wanted to try out the Space Pack just to prove what I expected: You can’t possibly add more storage to an iPhone in a way that isn’t gimmicky and a poor experience. Admittedly, my expectations were far from what Mophie has been able to accomplish; considering the limitations designed into iOS software and iPhone hardware, the Mophie Space Pack is a very interesting and useful accessory…

Having local storage built directly into the case is the real advantage of the Mophie Space Pack. Because there is no cloud service to manage your files and the storage is located right in the hardware, the Space Pack interacts with media and files exactly like music, photos, and videos synced to your device.

Content is managed through Mophie’s Space app (free on the App Store) which is surprisingly well polished. It really does feel like using a cloud storage app like Dropbox to interact with your media without the requirement for a data connection with the lag of downloading and caching content.

The Space app includes access to music, movies, photos, a camera for photos and videos, documents, and more. It’s very well crafted for iOS 7 and unique enough from the stock media apps. Although you can’t take a photo or video and save it directly to the Space Pack, the photo and video viewer can suck in your photos from your existing Camera Roll moving the data from your iPhone to the extra storage. This allows you to clear your Camera Roll and capture more photos and videos.
