Report: Foxconn Is Building a Display Plant to Make Sapphire Glass

- gizmodo.com

Foxconn is said to be gearing up to produce sapphire glass—the tough screen covering many were expecting to see in the iPhone 6—in a newly purchased plant.

According to Focus Taiwan, the China Economic Weekly reports that Foxconn has signed an agreement to begin building a "display factory" on a site right next to its iPhone assembly lines. What"s more, the reports claim that the main aim is to fabricate the sapphire glass that could toughen the screens of future phones. Cue speculation that the next generation of iPhone will feature a sapphire screen.

Of course, we"ve already heard more than a few rumors about iPhones sporting sapphire glass that ultimately came to nothing, so it may not pay to hold your breath. But if anyone can make a go of slathering the an iPhone in sapphire, it"s probably Foxconn itself. We"ll just have to wait, oh, ten months. [Focus Taiwan via MacRumors]

Twitter is about to get very nosey with its mobile subscribers, and if you’re among the millions of people using the company’s app on your smartphone, you’ll definitely want to listen up. The short-form social media outlet’s new app graph feature will soon start tracking which applications you have installed on your devices. This opt-out feature is being introduced to help the firm insert better ads and recommendations into your timeline.

In a Q&A description of this initiative, Twitter reinforces that it will not collect data from within applications and says that it will notify you when its monitoring feature is active. Not exactly a foreign practice, several existing mobile apps already collect information about their users, however considering Twitter’s massive number of subscribers this new practice might make some folks feel uneasy.

Here’s how to disable this feature:

Bing and Yahoo reportedly aiming to become default iOS search engine as Google’s contract runs out

Last week Mozilla announced that its Firefox browser would be dropping Google as the default search engine in favor of Yahoo. While it’s a good move for Yahoo, it won’t gain the company the exposure that comes with being the default search engine on something more widely used, such as Apple’s Safari browser on iOS devices.

That position has been held by Google since the iPhone’s launch in 2007, but the agreement that made the Mountain View-based company the default site for all of Safari’s searches will expire next year, and The Information reports that Yahoo and Microsoft’s Bing are both vying for the spot.

Apple looking for app engineers to work on virtual reality experiences

- 9to5mac.com

UI concept for VR iPhone case Pinć from Cordon Labs

Apple is hinting at its interest in developing apps for virtual reality experiences and hiring engineers to assist in the efforts. The evidence comes from a new job listing that Apple posted over the weekend seeking app engineers experienced with 3D graphics, virtual reality, and augmented reality.

More specifically, Apple is looking for app developers to build user interfaces and “high performance apps that integrate with Virtual Reality systems for prototyping and user testing.”

The job listing doesn’t provide many other details in terms of what exactly Apple is working on, but it sure sounds a lot like the company is interested in developing virtual reality and or augmented reality experiences of some kind. As for what “virtual reality systems” Apple is referring to, it’s unclear if the company has plans to integrate software with third-party hardware— like the growing number of iPhone accessories for VR experiences— or perhaps its own virtual reality hardware of sorts.

Even more interesting is the fact that an Apple patent popped up last year showing what looks a lot like an Oculus Rift-style headset:

Report: App Store downloads surge to highest ever in October following iPhone 6/6 Plus launch

- 9to5mac.com

According to the latest data from Fiksu, the launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus alongside iOS 8 accounted for a massive increase and an all-time high for app downloads. Specifically, the report points to a 42 percent increase from the previous month among the top 200 free iOS apps tracked by the company. Around 7.8 million downloads for the top 200 free apps accounted for a 42 percent increase over September and a 39 percent increase year-over-year.

“While recent indexes have shown a steady stream of escalating costs, the October index numbers validate another important trend: the increasing importance of apps to consumers,” said Micah Adler, CEO of Fiksu. “Mobile marketers must start thinking strategically about their marketing tactics over the longer term and figure out how to use apps to connect with customers. October’s hindsight should serve as a guide for marketers preparing for impending holiday activity.”

The report points out that many of the app downloads are likely “a result of the tendency of app users to quickly re-download their ‘vital apps’ during upgrades.” The first set of apps users download on their new iPhone 6s are likely to be those they can’t live without, which makes them much more likely to become loyal users of those apps.  The trend underscores the importance of nurturing user loyalty prior to device launches and gift-giving seasons.

Apple to donate portion of Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales to Global Fund to Fight AIDS

- 9to5mac.com

Apple has just announced a significant campaign to support World AIDS Day 2014 as part of its long-running (RED) program. The company will donate to the Global Fund to fight AIDS based on proceeds from its new Apps for (RED) section on the App Store, as well as a portion of online and retail sales made on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Apps for (RED) runs from November 24 through December 7 and consists of 25 apps with exclusive new content, in which all proceeds will go directly to the Global Fund to fight AIDS around the world. Participating apps include GarageBand, Star Walk, Threes, Angry Birds, Clash of Clans, FIFA 15, Clear, Cut The Rope 2 and several more.

Apple will also be providing customers with a (RED)-branded gift card on Black Friday based on the purchase of select products, and donating an undisclosed percentage of each sale. Just three days later, the iPhone maker will be donating an undisclosed portion of every sale made on Cyber Monday through its online and retail stores.

From Apple’s press release about the campaign:

“Apple is a proud supporter of (RED) because we believe the gift of life is the most important gift anyone can give,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “For eight years, our customers have been helping fight AIDS in Africa by funding life-saving treatments which are having a profoundly positive impact. This year we are launching our biggest fundraising push yet with the participation of Apple’s retail and online stores, and some of the brightest minds in the App Store are lending their talents to the effort as well.”

Apple has added a new page to its website to accompany the charitable campaign.

Apple reportedly bundling Beats Music with iOS next year

- 9to5mac.com

According to a new report from the Financial Times, Apple is expected to bundle the Beats Music streaming service with an upcoming version of iOS sometime next year.

Apple will bundle the subscription music service it acquired from Beats into its iOS operating system early next year, instantly making it available on hundreds of millions of iPhones and iPads – and ramping up pressure on Spotify, the market leader in music streaming.

The report comes amid rumors that Apple is planning to rebrand the Beats Music subscription service for a potential relaunch around February.Apple, of course, acquired the Jimmy Iovine and Dr Dre-founded subscription music service alongside the Beats headphones and speaker line earlier this year as part of a $3 billion acquisition.

Since the acquisition officially closed at the end of July, Apple has since promoted the Beats Music app for iPhone and iPad on the App Store through a prompt for new customers alongside its collection of other apps.

The Beats Music service has also been made available as a pre-installed channel on Apple TV since mid-September and it plans to support it through CarPlay eventually.

The payment company today debuted its application for the Pebble smartwatch, which allows users to make purchases at supported locations.

Unlike the Apple Watch and its associated payment system, PayPal’s app doesn’t require a connected smartphone to use. It also doesn’t support NFC-based transactions. Instead, it generates a payment code that can be used to check out and charge an order to a user’s account. In some stores users will also be able to check out simply by checking into the store through the app.

After Three Weeks, Apple Pay Is Already Transforming How We Buy Things

- gizmodo.com

iphone 4 1416177257 1749195437

For years, tech companies like Google and Softcard (formerly known as ISIS) begged with consumers to adopt its NFC-powered payment platform, and for the most part, their pleas went largely unheard. Now that Apple Pay has graced millions of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users with NFC purchasing powers, things are beginning to change. And really, everyone is a winner.

A report by The New York Times details how American consumer practices are slowly changing due to Apple Pay. Whole Foods recorded 150,000 iPhone transactions, Walgreens says NFC payments have doubled since Apple Pay debuted in October (thanks in no part to CurrentC), and McDonald"s says Apple"s payment service already accounts for 50 percent of its tap-to-pay total. Considering the service has only available three weeks on two iPhones compared to the big swath of Android phones, that"s pretty impressive, but as one analyst says, it"s a slow-moving revolution:

Most People Prefer The iPhone 6, But The 6 Plus Is Selling OK, Says Analyst

- techcrunch.com

iphone 4 1416088915 1893926533 Turns out you weren’t the only one that thought the new iPhone 6 Plus is just too big to carry around as a normal phone. A new study suggests [PDF] that the sales of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are largely driven by the 4.7-inch model. However, while forming less of the sales figures, the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus has still captured a sizeable market share in Apple’s sales. On the flip side, these larger phones from Apple may also be less popular with Android users planning to switch to Apple than analysts had predicted.

Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) found that the iPhone 6 accounted for 68 percent of all iPhone sales, while the iPhone 6 Plus took between 23 and 24 percent.

It also found that fewer iPhone buyers came from the Google Android platform in 2014 (12 percent) compared to those who switched from Android to an iPhone in 2013 (23 percent). Previously, the iPhone 5s had attracted customers away from BlackBerry and Windows devices. Now? Not so much – almost certainly down to the wide availability of robust, large Android phones now.

Review: Scosche BoomBottle weatherproof Bluetooth speaker for cyclists

Review: Scosche BoomBottle weatherproof Bluetooth speaker for cyclists

- 9to5mac.com

You can scarcely turn around these days without bumping into a new Bluetooth speaker. We’ve reviewed many of them.

The Scosche BoomBottle manages to set itself apart from the crowd, however, by targeting one specific market: cyclists. The speaker is the same size and shape as a large drinks bottle, so it fits into a standard bicycle bottle cage – and it’s weatherproofed, to survive the elements. I took it for a spin …

Look & feel

The BoomBottle is a ribbed, grey cylinder topped with black speaker grilles at each end. The casing has a smooth, rubbery feel to it, with a little bit of give if you press hard – which Scosche describes as ‘shock-absorbing.’

The speaker is around 8 inches long by a little under three inches in diameter, and fitted well (and snugly) in the bottle cage on my main bike.

There are just three controls, each a decent-sized rubberized black button you can operate with gloved hands. One is a multi-function control I’ll get to in a moment, the others are volume up and down. There’s a single, recessed blue LED beneath the multifunction button.

Sprint announces ‘iPad for Life’ 24-month lease for iPad Air 2 & iPad mini 3

- 9to5mac.com

Sprint today announced it’s now offering an ‘iPad for Life Plan’, much like its similar offering for the iPhone, that allows customers to get an iPad for $0 down and monthly payments over the course of a 24 month lease. The deal is available for the new iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 with monthly payments varying depending on the storage capacity.

Monthly payments for the 16GB models start at $20/month for the iPad Air 2 and $17/month for the iPad mini 3 and go up from there. “With our announcement of the iPad for Life Plan, Sprint is the only wireless carrier giving customers the ability to acquire an iPad Air 2 for only $20 per month or the iPad Mini 3 for only $17 per month with no out-of-pocket costs,” said Tom Roberts, senior vice president Marketing, Sprint. “And, with the iPad for Life Plan, customers can easily upgrade their tablet every two years.”

A breakdown of pricing for the various storage capacities is pictured in the graph above. For the 16GB model, a 24-month lease would work out to $480 before taxes and fees compared to the $629 the device retails for.

Like Sprint’s iPhone for Life plan, when the lease is up iPad users have the option of bringing the device back and leasing another, purchasing it outright, continuing to lease the device month-to-month, or cancelling service. Sprint notes that the iPads can be added to a Sprint Family Share Pack for $10/month per line, but the carrier is waiving that fee for iPads activated as a new line for plans 20GB or higher through December 2015. It’s also offering a new tablet plan for a limited time with 100MB for $10/month.

Sprint recently announced an updated ‘iPhone for Life’ leasing program with a new 12-month lease option that kicks in tomorrow. SanDisk launches Made-for-iPhone ‘iXpand’ USB flash drive w/ integrated Lightning connector

- 9to5mac.com

SanDisk is today launching a new Made-for-iPhone/iPad product called iXpand that integrates a Lightning connector into a traditional USB Flash Drive device. Like similar products that have recently started hitting the market, the iXpand makes it easier to transfer content between iOS devices and computers with standard USB ports by including Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector in addition to a traditional USB plug.

Sure most of us can easily transfer content over the cloud these days, but that doesn’t do much good when internet connections or bandwidth limitations keep us from getting our content when we want it. Think video content on a plane, for example. It’s also ideal for those that want a physical backup of files that can be easily viewed on an iPhone or iPad. I recently reviewed a similar product from Sanyo’s Hyper brand, and like that product the iXpand offers a companion app for streaming and viewing files directly from the connected drive to an iOS device:

- 9to5mac.com

2K games, maker of BioShock and XCOM have released a new “expansion” for the popular XCOM: Enemy Unknown titled Enemy Within. While the company calls the game an “expansion,” the term “sequel” might be more apt for the iPhone version, which functions as a standalone app rather than an add-on to the previous game.

Enemy Within, which was released for PCs exactly one year ago this past Tuesday to high praise from players, builds on the gameplay of Enemy Unknown, but adds several features and updated mechanics, including new enemies, weapons, abilities, and even an expanded story.

XCOM: Enemy Within is available on the App Store for $12.99. In lieu of a change log, the full App Store description, including a detailed list of the new content, in included below:

COM®: Enemy Within is a standalone expansion to the 2012 strategy game of the year XCOM: Enemy Unknown and it’s now available on iOS devices! Enemy Within features the core gameplay of Enemy Unknown plus more exciting content. Check out the new soldiers, abilities, enemies, maps, missions, and multiplayer mode for the fresh new strategy gaming experience!

• New Weapons and Equipment: Give your operatives an extra tactical edge with new projects from your engineering team and the Foundry.

• New Enemy Threats: Adopt new tactics to counter the threats from two new alien types and a deadly new organization known as EXALT.

At this point there are just as many portable chargers on the market as there are iPhone cases and Bluetooth speakers combined. But somehow Ventev has done the impossible by creating a portable charger that manages to improve on the near infinite number of designs that came before it, by adding built-in Lightning and microUSB cables, as well as AC prongs so it can be plugged directly into an outlet.

At $110 when eventually available in March of next year, the Powercell 10000+ is a little on the expensive side when it comes to portable chargers. But it packs a decent-sized 9,000mAh battery powerful enough to charge two devices at once—even a tablet—and has a small percentage display on top indicating how much battery life it"s got left.

US-China trade deal set to reduce manufacturing costs for Apple, aims to cut prices for consumers

- 9to5mac.com

A trade agreement reached between the U.S. and China looks set to reduce Apple’s manufacturing costs by removing import tariffs on components imported into the country.

Apple uses components from a number of countries around the world, notably Korea and Japan, which are imported into China for the assembly of iPhones, iPads and Macs. China currently imposes import tariffs on these components. The new deal would allow companies like Apple, Microsoft and HP to bring components into China free from these charges …

The WSJ reports that while the agreement between the two countries needs to be ratified by the remaining 76 member countries of the Information Technology Agreement, agreement between the U.S. and China was seen as the key step.

Innovative new Type Nine keyboard for iOS 8 takes you way back to 1993

- 9to5mac.com

Gather round, children, and let Grandpa Beasley tell you a story about the olden days. Long before these newfangled iPhones and Androids existed, most people didn’t have full keyboards on their cell phones, unless they were using a BlackBerry (but that’s a story for another time). In order to type out our text messages, we had to use “T9″ keyboards that required you to press the numbers on the dialpad a few times to select each letter individually.

And now, youngin’s, you, too, can experience all of the fun and frustration of ye olde keyboards right on your iPhone. All you have to do is log into the App Store and download one of those fancy “app” things you’re all so keen on. It’s called Type Nine, and it puts a good ol’ fashioned T9 keyboard right on your screen so you can learn to type the way your forefathers did.

Of course, since you kids seem to love your “predictive text” so much, the Type Nine keyboard includes that function, too, meaning you won’t have to wear your fingers out tapping the same key over and over to get the right letter. All of the punctuation marks get their own special page as well, rather than requiring you to mash the 1 key until you accidentally pass the one you’re after and have to go all the way around again.

If you youngsters really want to see what typing on a phone was like back in my day, you’ll need to track down a Moto RAZR. If that’s not an option, you can take the Type Nine keyboard for a try on your iPhone running iOS 8. It’s available on the App Store for $.99. Now scram. Grandpa Beasley needs a nap.Filed under: Apps Tagged: type nine keyboard For more information about Apps and type nine keyboard continue reading at 9to5Mac.What do you think? Netflix now plays in 1080p on your iPhone 6 Plus

- engadget.com

iphone 3 1415754118 1780091504 Did you buy that big, honking iPhone 6 Plus so that you could watch Netflix videos in glorious 1080p? If you did, today"s your lucky day. Netflix has updated its iOS app to make full use of the higher-res screens on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, including...

Netflix updated for iOS 8, adds 1080p video playback for iPhone 6 Plus

- 9to5mac.com

Netflix updated its iPhone and iPad app to version 7.0 today adding optimization for the larger displays on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus introduced in September. The updated version of Netflix shows more content like titles and genres as well as previews of movies and TV shows when browsing for something to watch. In addition to optimizing the Netflix app for iPhone 6 users, Netflix says the new version of its app will now offer video playback in 1080p, full HD, for users with the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus.

The larger iPhone 6 Plus model features a resolution of 1920×1080, the same resolution as 1080p HDTVs, so Netflix users can now enjoy the same experience from the living room on the 5.5-inch iPhone display. (The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 display, however, has a pixel resolution of 1334×750.)

Netflix says its updated iPhone and iPad app also adds full support for iOS 8, the latest version of the iPhone and iPad software also released in September.

Users of Chromecast, Google’s $35 HDMI streaming stick to bring Internet content to HDTVs, should also notice improvements thanks to this update.

Two of the best iPhone car mounts we’ve tried: Fuse Chicken Une Bobine and MONTAR by WinnerGear

- 9to5mac.com

There are a lot of options for mounting your iPhone in your car. I’ve relied on the highly-rated Kensington suction cup windshield car mount for a few years without too much incident. However, I’ve never been too pleased about how it blocks a bit of my driving view and requires a non-elegant wire to go up my dashboard.

Today I’m looking at the Fuse Chicken Une Bobine (pictured above) and MONTAR by WinnerGear…

The $35 Fuse Chicken Une Bobine (which began as a popular Kickstarter) isn’t just a car mount. It is a bendable Lightning cable with super-strong metal reinforcement like what you’d find in a public payphone cord. At one end is a normal USB plug. On the other is a Lightning connector with a mount that fits iPhones of all shapes and sizes. The docking portion has also morphed since Kickstarter for more side to side and back reinforcement. What’s interesting here is that with the cable being pliable but rigid and the lightning cable able to hold the iPhone firmly in place, you can make a great charging car mount out of it.

To be clear, this won’t stay in one place during rapid acceleration and braking, but a quick readjustment during driving is easy and it is nice to be able to bring it close when you need it for navigating and then moving it out of the way when it is playing music from a playlist or charging. I’ve found that it works even better as a passenger seat car mount because it is so easy to manipulate. Keep in mind that the cable isn’t strong enough to keep the iPhone aloft alone, it will need to be leveraged or wrapped around something.
