Apple for the first time started shipping sapphire from its new plant in Arizona to its suppliers in China ahead of ramping up the operation with more furnaces capable of supplying larger quantities. The news comes from UBS Research’s Q1 preview on GT Advanced Technologies, the company that Apple has partnered with to open a sapphire plant producing the material expected to replace Corning’s Gorilla Glass on the next-generation iPhone display.

Alleged iPhone 6 dummy molds appear online, reflecting thin design seen in previous leaks

- 9to5mac.com

New images from Nowwhereelse.fr show some sort of physical mockup of the alleged ‘iPhone 6′ design we have seen from many sources in the past few days.

The purpose of this mockup model is not clear. At first glance, it seems like some sort of dummy model, that could be used by case manufacturers to validate and refine case designs. This is what the site has to say on the matter, via Google Translate:

Published by a member of a well-known Chinese forum indiscretions cabbage lovers, the three photos that I propose to examine in this article are meant to introduce the physical model of one of the two future iPhone rumored ad with a lot of leaks for several months already. Prototype for reference molding to prop in mobile telephony.

The validity of these models are very sketchy. It is unclear whether this mockup was made because of the other leaks, or the other leaks were inspired by this dummy unit.

Lining up very closely with renders from a week ago, the images clearly show the curved edges and ultra-thin profile of this supposed iPhone 6 casing. Unfortunately, the person responsible for these images did not report measurements so exact details on thinness and size are not known. The previous renders suggested the upcoming device will be just 6mm in thickness.

Judging by eye, though, it seems to approximately resemble a 4.7 inch screen size. The sides are also substantially thinner and clearly depict the elongated pill-shaped volume buttons. Supposed images of these components surfaced on Monday.

Yesterday, an analyst speculated that Apple would favor device slimness over improvements to image stabilization. In these molds, a hole for the camera is filled with a protruding piece. However, it is unclear whether this is done purposefully, to reflect the fact that the final device will have an exposed camera component. The mystery of the absence of the dual-flash reappears here, too.

What Apple’s future of mobile payments on the iPhone could look like

- cultofmac.com

Apple is working on its own mobile payments solution, per multiple reports from places like The Wall Street Journal. Exactly how the company plans to implement such a service remains to be seen.

Tim Cook has made it clear that Touch ID was created with mobile payments in mind, which makes sense when you consider that it’s such a secure form of authentication.

A new concept called EasyPay takes the Apple approach to mobile payments on the iPhone, and it looks great.

Interface designer and app developer Ricardo Del Toro recently shared his ideas behind EasyPay on Dribble. Here’s part of what he had to say:

FreedomPop now supports iPhone 4/5 on its free wireless plans, launches iOS app for free voice & text

- 9to5mac.com

FreedomPop, the carrier offering free and cheap data plans on Sprint’s network, today announced it will start selling the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4 on its free wireless plan offering 200 voice minutes, 500 text messages and 500 MBs of data per month. Previously the plan was only available to select Android devices after launching last year with an outdated HTC device. In addition the company is launching a new iOS app that offers free voice, text, and voicemail to iPhone customers on any carrier:

With the launch of its new iOS app, FreedomPop allows any iPhone user stuck in an existing contract to save hundreds of dollars per year by downgrading their voice plans and leveraging FreedomPop’s free voice and text service directly from their existing phone. Today, any iPhone, iPad or iPod user can download FreedomPop’s new communication app, which provides free calls, texts and voicemail. Customers also have the option to port their existing number to FreedomPop or select a new one. For the new iOS app, visit our page on the iTunes store.

Perhaps the most notable part of the announcement is that FreedomPop will be selling the iPhone 5 directly to customers for just $349 on one of its free no-contract plans. It won’t be selling the iPhone 4, but it will support the device for those that want to bring their own Sprint-compatible iPhone and supports routing your old number over to the service.

Review: Stride 2 jailbreak tweak brings a customizable gesture-based passcode to iOS 7 devices

- 9to5mac.com

If you’ve been around the jailbreak community for a while, it’s possible that you’re familiar with the popular iOS 5/6 gesture-based lock screen tweak Stride. This tweak worked as a lock screen passcode alternative and allowed users to set a custom gesture to unlock an iOS device.

Created by the popular tweak developer Adam Bell, Stride is making a comeback and is fully compatible with iOS 7 devices. This exciting release provides a very similar experience, but has been given a very clean makeover. This results in a beautiful native-like iOS 7 gesture-based lock screen and I just can’t get enough of it.

Review: JBL Pulse portable Bluetooth speaker with LED light show

Review: JBL Pulse portable Bluetooth speaker with LED light show

- 9to5mac.com

We’ve taken a look at a vast array of portable Bluetooth speakers and have found that most include similar features but sound quality and reliability can vary greatly. That’s why we eagerly awaited the arrival of our JBL Pulse, because it dares to be unique in a sea of familiarity. A dazzling display of LEDs encompasses the entire unit, bringing your music to life by dancing along with the beat. We put this new speaker to the test to see if this LED-studded speaker is just a novelty or if it has a lasting impact on the way we enjoy our music…

Overview

The Pulse is much smaller than I imagined it would be. After reviewing the press images and promo videos, I was expecting the speaker to be about the same length as a football, but it’s actually only about 6-inches long. Its diameter is just over 3-inches, which is just small enough that it fits in large cup-holders.

The speakers and LED lights wrap nearly 360-degrees around the unit except for a thin strip that is home to a micro-USB port for charging (cable/wall adapter included) and AUX port to hook up an audio source directly. The speakerless strip is conveniently flattened so the unit can balance on a flat surface. Both the end caps and the port strip are covered in a rubberized black matte finish that seems to hold up well to scratches and bumps.

The speaker is covered by a tight metal mesh that’s thin enough to let the LEDs shine through but also feels solid and protective. All of the buttons reside on one end of the unit, including the power, volume, Bluetooth sync, and LED controls.

Sound Quality/Light Show Impressions

The design and build quality of the speaker is top-notch. In no way does it feel fragile or cheap. I wouldn’t be comfortable bringing it along any extreme adventures, but I wouldn’t think twice about tailgating, camping, or picnicking with it. You definitely do not need to handle it with kid gloves.

As for overall sound quality I would say it’s good. It certainly packs enough “oomph” to fill a small to medium-sized room with great sounding music, but when I tested it outdoors, tailgating at a Jimmy Buffett concert, I found myself wishing it was louder. Although, when the party moved underneath a tent it was plenty loud enough to get everyone moving. No matter the listening environment, I never found the sound to be distorted in any way, but I did wish it had just a bit more punch for bass-heavy songs.

Should Apple ditch the iPod?

For the moment, the Apple doom-mongers have been silenced by another record quarter.

But there’s one area where things are down, and still dropping. It’s the iPod division, and it’s the closest thing Apple has to a dead man walking — with sales of the music player continuing to plummet as more people buy iPhones than ever, and listeners move away from music downloads, toward streaming services like Spotify, Pandora and iTunes Radio.

Should Apple ditch the iconic product line which first signaled Apple’s expansion beyond computers — or is there some way that business can be turned around?

Samsung Calls Out iPhone Camera By Name In New Galaxy S5 Ad

- techcrunch.com

[embedded content]Samsung is throwing shade once again, naming names in its latest Galaxy S5 TV spot. The promo for the new Android flagship calls out the fact that its camera takes pictures at “twice the resolution” of the iPhone 5s, which is sort of true in a barebones, numbers-on-paper kind of way, but not necessarily reflective of the relative merits of the actual experience of using both devices as cameras.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m a fan of the Galaxy S5′s camera, which does indeed boast 16 megapixel resolution. But Apple’s iPhone still has the best mobile camera in the biz, hands down, at least in terms of daily use value. Nokia might have a camera worthy of a compact dedicated digicam in its Lumia 1020, and Samsung’s camera might have some neat tricks like background defocus, but Apple makes the best shooter and software for producing consistently great results with every shutter press, with a minimum of fuss, for pics that look great when shared on the web.

High resolution is terrific for prints – but I can count how often I make prints from my digital photos using no fingers on no hands. Like it or not, the best camera phone these days is the best Instagram phone, and that remains the iPhone, despite improvements in specs by recent challengers. Taking potshots at the competition is fine, but the iPhone’s camera isn’t a weak point to be exploited, especially when you’re having camera issues of your own.

Review: Otterbox Defender protective case for iPad Air

- 9to5mac.com

I don’t generally like to hide away my iDevices inside cases, but there are some environments where this is at least strongly advisable – and the basket of a hot-air balloon is definitely one of those. In anything but still air, a landing tends to involve the basket being dragged across the ground – and much as you try to secure things, there’s always the risk of loose items taking a fall. Which can get expensive when one of those loose items is an iPad Air.

iPads are the perfect navigation device in a hot-air balloon as you need to simultaneously reference three different types of maps. An airspace map, showing the areas you can’t fly into without risking an A380 bearing down on you (followed shortly afterwards by the aviation licensing authority). A land map to show the ground detail you need for navigation and landing purposes. And finally, a map showing Sensitive Areas (SAs) where landowners request that you either don’t land or overfly above a specified altitude (generally 500 or 1000 feet) to avoid disturbing cattle, dogs and so on.

An iPad provides a moving map combining all three types of data in a single view. But with bumpy landings a fact of life, it would be a braver man than I to risk using a naked iPad. I thus decided to look around at the protective cases available, and having been impressed by the Otterbox Defender iPhone case, tried out the version for the iPad Air …

Apple Profiles Apps Used To Create Its ‘Powerful’ New Ad

- techcrunch.com

iphone from apple 1398288718 1923885567 Apple has a new ad out that you may have seen, featuring a track by The Pixies and a whole lot of iPhone users employing mobile software to cover the song. The ad harkens back to earlier Apple ads where people used a variety of software from the App Store to have fun with their devices, and as such represents a pretty strong return to form.I’ll forgive them the obligatory dusk-on-the-desert-young-people-shooting-off-bottle-rockets shot that seems to make its way into most ads aimed at Millennials or younger these days, because the rest of the spot presents people doing stuff with their iPhones that I actually wouldn’t mind emulating. Apple anticipated that, of course, and created a micro-site to go along with the ad that offers a look at and links to each of six apps featured prominently in the video (which Apple officially refers to as a ‘film,’ by the by).

The apps in question are Star Walk, Instant Heart Rate, Word Lens, AmpliTube, Luminair, and Pacific Rim. They cover a wide range of features and functions, including one that you may have thought was exclusive to Samsung’s Galaxy S5 (Instant Heart Rate). Apple’s promotional pushes almost always seem to come with microsites these days, but that’s smart – giving ads an endpoint for further engagement makes a lot of sense when you’re generating buzz and want to do more than just fritter that away.

Apple Releases iOS 7.1.1 With Touch ID Improvements

- techcrunch.com

iphone 3 1398196967 137426198 Apple has released a new update to iOS 7 today, a minor point update with bug fixes and improvements. One such improvement beefs up Touch ID performance, which should mean better recognition of fingerprints registered with your iPhone 5s device. Some users had cited a gradual worsening of the Touch ID sensor’s ability to recognize existing fingerprints, so hopefully this clears that up for those who were having trouble.Apple had previously been reported to have been preparing a software update to improve this so-called “fade” problem, according to AppleInsider, so it isn’t surprising to see it show up. There’s also a bug fix that should make the iOS keyboard more responsive, according to the software’s release notes, as well as a fix for an issue that affects the use of Bluetooth keyboards when the VoiceOver user accessibility feature is enabled.

To update your device, simply check out the Software Update submenu in Setting on your device or plug it into your computer and open iTunes.

- 9to5mac.com

Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to try out a number of Satechi’s USB hubs in my effort to combat my growing need to wire in more stuff to my Mac’s 4 USB ports. While wireless is often more convenient and downright necessary on laptops to have a good experience, I still enjoy the speed and reliability of a wired connection on my desktop setup. To have a completely ergonomic experience and avoid plugging and unplugging things, a USB hub of some sort is definitely needed. The challenge to buying the right hub for your needs is deciphering how each hub differs; it’s not just limited to the number of ports available…

One of Apple’s most famous patents is slide-to-unlock, a method of waking up a touchscreen smartphone that has proven to be one of the most valuable in Apple’s arsenal. Now, Apple is trying to patent a similar system that would use gestures to unlock an iPhone. And if that sounds familiar, it should, because Android already does it.

Bloomberg: iOS 8 Will Have Shazam"s Song Identification Baked In

- gizmodo.com

iphones online 1397741582 1253384844 S

Can"t name that tune? No worry: Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is partnering with Shazam to embed song identification software right into its forthcoming iOS 8.

The news agency reports that two of its sources believe Apple is "planning to unveil a song-discovery feature in an update of its iOS mobile software that will let users identify a song and its artist using an iPhone or iPad." Obviously Shazam has been doing that forever, but it seems that Apple is teaming up with the guys behind the app so that it"s "integrated into the mobile software in the same way that Twitter"s service is currently incorporated, meaning consumers don"t need to separately download it."

The report explains that it"ll integrate with Siri, too—so you"ll be able to ask "what song is playing" to find out what you"re listening to. Bloomberg believes that Apple will show off the addition to iOS at its annual developer conference that starts June 2 in San Francisco.

Elsewhere, the same sources suggest that Apple is planning to roll out iTunes Radio outside the U.S. later this year, and that Apple is mulling whether to release a subscription-music service, too. Indeed, it claims "Apple has built the service internally, yet has held off on releasing it to avoid slowing download sales."

Of course, these rumors might not bear fruit: they might have long been mulled and discarded, or simply struggle to ever make it to the wild. But if there is a grain of truth in them, it looks like iOS 8 could have music as a focus. Let"s wait see. [Bloomberg]

Apple and Shazam planning to team up for music identification feature built into iOS

- 9to5mac.com

Apple and Shazam are teaming up to build a music identification feature natively into iOS, according to a Bloomberg report. The feature will allow users to find the name and artist of a song that’s playing, likely with the option to download the song from the iTunes Store or create an new iTunes Radio station.

Unlike some of Apple’s other music-releated features (such as Podcasts and iTunes U), the system will be built into the OS directly rather than require a separate download. So far there isn’t any confirmation of whether this feature will appear in iOS 8 or a later version, but with WWDC right around the corner, Apple will need to work quickly to secure the deal if the feature is to be announced with the next-gen software update.

Apple agrees to participate in “Smartphone Anti-Theft Voluntary Commitment” program

- 9to5mac.com

Apple has agreed to back a new initiative along with a host of Android manufacturers and all of the major U.S. cellular carriers that would require all smartphones manufactured after July 2015 to come with specific anti-theft features. The program is the latest attempt to prevent theft of smartphones, which some have blamed for increasing crime rates.

To this end, Apple introduced a first-of-its-kind system in iOS 7 that blocks freshly-restored iPhones from being used until the original owner logs in with the Apple ID associated with the device. Today’s agreement between the carriers and handset manufacturers essentially states that all parties will ship this exact type of system on new phones.

Specifically, the required anti-theft measures are broken into four kinds:

-A remote-wipe feature (like the one included with the Find My iPhone service)

-A remote-lock feature (like the PIN code setting included with Find My iPhone)

-A restore-blocking feature that can prevent unauthorized attempts to wipe the phone and use it (like iOS 7′s Activation Lock)

-And the ability to restore the original owner’s data upon recovery of the device (such as from an iCloud or iTunes backup)

As you can see from the points above, Apple’s Find My iPhone and Activation Lock services are already in full compliance with the agreement. These security measures must be included with the phone at the time of purchase, or available for download from the App Store or a similar software market.

The following companies that have agreed to this program, as per the CTIA announcement earlier today:

Apple Inc.; Asurion; AT&T; Google Inc.; HTC America, Inc.; Huawei Device USA;Motorola Mobility LLC; Microsoft Corporation; Nokia, Inc.; Samsung Telecommunications America, L.P.; Sprint Corporation; T-Mobile USA; U.S. Cellular; and Verizon Wireless.

The program is voluntary (for now), though legislators have previously tried to enforce such requirements by law.Filed under: AAPL Company Tagged: Activation Lock, Apple, AT&T, CTIA, HTC, Huawei, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Continue reading more about AAPL Company, Apple, and Samsung at 9to5Mac.What do you think?
