How to set up a foolproof note-taking system for writers and other nerds (Part 2)

- cultofmac.com

iphone tips 1401570344 1258125128

Welcome to Part 2 of our series on note-taking for writers (or anyone who takes lots of notes). In three posts we’re looking at ways to take notes on paper, on your iPhone or Mac, and collected from the web, and combine them all (optionally) into Evernote for easy browsing and retrieval. In theory you can do all of this just by launching Evernote, but that app is pretty terrible at capturing notes.

Part 1 dealt with paper notes. This part is all about grabbing quick text notes on your iPhone and Mac, and then using Hazel to send them to Evernote. Have fun!

Chrome iOS app gets improved Omnibox, revamped search results page

- 9to5mac.com

Google updated its Chrome app for iPhone and iPad today with a few minor features to make the browsing experience more comfortable. First up is right-to-left Omnibox support for Arabic and Hebrew after adding initial autocomplete support for right-to-left languages in the previous update. The company said the update also brings the ability to “Easily refine your search queries and view more results” thanks to a slightly revamped search results page.

In addition, Google will now let you “see your search term in the omnibox, instead of the long search query URL.” That means when you enter a search query and land on a Google search results page, you’ll no longer see a long, confusing URL in the omnibox but rather just your search term much like in Apple’s Safari iOS app.

What’s New in Version 35.0.1916.38

• Added right-to-left support to the omnibox for Arabic and Hebrew

• See your search term in the omnibox, instead of the long search query URL

• Easily refine your search queries and view more results on the search results page

Microsoft and Skype may have just invented the world’s first real universal translator

- cultofmac.com

apple iphone 1401265948 1858147562

Universal translators are a common trope in science fiction. In The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, they come in the form of the babelfish, a tiny crustacean you jam in your ear. In Farscape, they are bacteria injected into your body. In Star Trek, they take a less squishy form as a wand or tiny computer pinned to your lapel.

In all incarnations, though, a universal communicator is seen as alien and futuristic. But Microsoft wants to change all that. The Washington-based company has just revealed a new real-time speech translation tool that is set to be built right into Skype, and which can translate any foreign language into English in the blink of an eye.

Uber drivers make way more money than you think

- cultofmac.com

cheap iphones 1401235320 1073124140

For those with access to its mobile app, Uber is quickly becoming the preferred method of transportation over traditional taxis.

It’s a lot easier to summon a ride with a tap on your iPhone screen than hailing down a cab on the side of the street. For drivers, Uber is proving to be not only easier, but incredibly lucrative.

UberX drivers working in around 40 hours a week in New York City make an average of $90,766 a year, reports The Washington Post. Drivers in San Francisco make around $74,191.

The average taxi drivers makes about $30,000.

Designed to compete with cheaper alternatives like Lyft, UberX is the startup’s lower-cost service that requires drivers to provide their own vehicles. Uber is obviously doing something right; the company is valued at $17 billion and 20,000 new drivers are joining each month.

One of the key reasons drivers love Uber is that it lets them set their own hours. You work whenever you want, and you don’t have to waste time looking for rides to give.

During an UberX trip I took over this past weekend, I spoke with my driver about why he joined. He said he was a medical student who drove at night and during the weekends to make some extra cash. He had tried driving for Lyft but found Uber to be more organized and responsive to feedback as a company.

So if you’re looking for a new job or just a way to make some more money on the side, Uber might be the way to go.

The note also states that Touch ID sensor shipments will increase by 233% this year, which would certainly make sense if the technology was going to be added to so many new devices. According to the report, these new sensors will be made more durable than the current version through the use of tin:

This jailbreak tweak gives iMessage head, Facebook-style

- cultofmac.com

apple computer 1401143586 288648429

Facebook’s Chat Heads first debuted back in April, 2013 as a central UI element in the new Facebook for Android, the Facebook app on iOS, and the laughably ill-received ‘Facebook phone,’ the HTC First. Just like it sounds, a Chat Head is a bubble-like chat indicator that hovers over everything else until you read the message and then dismiss it by dragging it to the trash.

Some people love Chat Heads as a whimsical alternative to the omnipresent UI indicator. Some people despite it as the perfect example of design excess: a disruptive nagging ‘feature’ that forces a user to go through a tedious interaction every time a message is received in order to dismiss it. However you feel about Chat Heads, though, you can now have them on your iPhone’s default Messaging app… if you have a jailbroken device, that is.

How to set up a foolproof note-taking system for writers and other nerds (Part 1)

- cultofmac.com

iphone 5 1400965318 1964207661

I started writing stories this year – short fiction and a couple of novellas so far – and I’ve found I need to make a lot of notes. The iPhone is pretty great for this, as you’d expect, but not always: Sometimes it’s just not appropriate to tap away on a cellphone, and sometimes you might want to make little drawings, or maybe you just find it easier and faster to pull out a paper notebook or index card.

The biggest advantage of iPhone notes is that they are sync-able and searchable. Paper is neither. But using a combo of apps, old-school paper hacks and an easy-to-maintain “workflow”, I came up with a simple note-taking system that keeps paper and pixels together, both equally searchable, sync-able and usable.

Latest Weibo leak shows supposed 4.7-inch iPhone screen backlight part

- 9to5mac.com

Weibo is continuing to be the source of unverified iPhone 6 leaks. This time, user “顾Gooey” has published some photos that he claims to represent display backlight components for the next-generation iPhone with a 4.7-inch screen. These parts appear similarly structured to the iPhone 5S and 5C version of the backlight component, meaning that the forum poster is either passing off the current-generation part as next-generation or that there is something legitimate about the components. The iPhone 6 is rumored to come in both 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch sizes, and it will run iOS 8, include a more efficient A8 processor, and likely feature a 1704 x 960 display with a sharper pixel density. Regardless, I went searching and realized my calendar did not have major US holidays on it. Here’s how I fixed that oversight.

Your Facebook app is about get a lot smarter at knowing what you’re listening to and watching on TV.

In an upcoming update in the App Store, Facebook will add the ability to automatically tag music and TV shows within a status update. The Shazam-like feature will have to be manually enabled by the user, and links to songs and shows will be attached to statuses in the News Feed. Facebook hopes the feature encourages people to share more, while it’s sure to cause some users to worry about sharing too much.

“When writing a status update – if you choose to turn the feature on – you’ll have the option to use your phone’s microphone to identify what song is playing or what show or movie is on TV,” explains Facebook. “That means if you want to share that you’re listening to your favorite Beyoncé track or watching the season premiere of Game of Thrones, you can do it quickly and easily, without typing.”

Songs will be displayed with 30-second preview links from Spotify. Both music and TV tagging will be limited to users in the U.S, unfortunately. The update will roll out to U.S Facebook users over the next few weeks.

[embedded content]

You’ve already been able to tell Facebook what you’re listening to manually, but now the app will be able to do the heavy lifting on its own. Facebook recently added previewing for status updates in its iOS app, and content sharing suggestions are being shown to some users after sharing.

Facebook says it doesn’t store any audio recordings. What the iPhone’s mic picks up is instantly analyzed and then the data is thrown away.

Facebook isn’t the only one getting interested in Shazam-like audio recognition. Apple is expected to partner with Shazam itself for a music tagging feature in iOS 8, which will be unveiled during the WWDC keynote on June 2nd.

Apple Patents Photo Backgrounds To Help You Remember Who You’re Texting With

- techcrunch.com

cheap iphone 1400185926 1572431247 Apple has a new patent application published by the USPTO (via AppleInsider) that makes it easier to remember who you’re texting. This could help alleviate the incredibly painful SMS fails where you send a message to the wrong person, occasionally with catastrophic results. The system works using contact pictures employed in the background of text conversations as a big, glaring visual cue telling you exactly who’s receiving your communiqué.The system would put the contact picture of the person you’re conversing with in the background of your message window, with your actual conversation overlaid on top. For group chats, the system suggests using multiple contact pictures for the backdrop, either arranged Brady Bunch style in a grid, or in a cycling carousel, or with various visual cues like showing some grayed out and one in color to indicate which one sent the last received message.

If there aren’t any images associated with a contact, the system could employ generic male or female avatars to at least give you some kind of cue. Also, the patent goes on to describe how this might be made available to other, third-party apps via API, too.

Text message fails aren’t as easy to fall into as DM fails, really, but they do still happen and they can still have disastrous effects. Apple’s patent seems like it could mess up the clean UI approach they’re going for, but it also includes provisions to make the images shown more subtle, like opacity changes, instead of just garish full color wallpapers. Like most Apple patents, it’s not likely to make its way to shipping product anytime soon, but it’s another example of the company’s targeted small UX changes in core phone experiences.

Facebook iOS app adds post previews & drafts, tests related content cards

- 9to5mac.com

First available for Android users, Facebook has just released an update to its iOS app that introduces the ability to create drafts of posts, preview posts before publishing and more.

With version 10.0, Facebook users can now create posts even when not connected to the internet or in airplane mode and save the drafts for posting later. As for previews of posts, Facebook notes that you can now “Review what your post will look like and choose whether to remove any suggested links before sharing what you’re reading, watching or listening to.”

The updated app also gets “Improvements to make News Feed load faster, especially on older phones and tablets.”

In addition to the updated Facebook iOS app, TechCrunch reports that Facebook is currently testing Google Now-like related info cards with a select group of users. The cards (pictured below) would be presented to users after posting (pictured below). Facebook described the feature:

iPhone 6 with larger, sharper 1704 x 960 resolution screen in testing

- 9to5mac.com

Apple is preparing to release a new iPhone with a larger screen later this year, and while multiple reports have indicated that the screen will be larger, the exact dimensions of the screen and its resolution have so far been guesswork.

Some industry watchers have speculated that Apple could stretch the iPhone software’s interface and retain the iPhone 5s’s screen resolution of 1136 x 640. This approach would allow all iOS software and App Store apps to function normally on the iPhone 6 without work from developers. The downside of this approach would be that the iPhone 6′s display would fall below Steve Jobs’ somewhat arbitrary 300 pixels per inch definition of ‘Retina’ for a phone.

Just like with the transition to the iPhone 4′s Retina display in 2010 and the transition to the iPhone 5′s taller screen in 2012, Apple is preparing major resolution changes for the iPhone 6 that will require software changes by both Apple and developers, according to people briefed on the specifications of the new device…

Columbia University students create software allowing native iOS apps to run on Android devices

- 9to5mac.com

Photo: Reuters

For some time now, iOS users have cited the quality and quantity of third-party software available for the platform as an important factor in their choice of mobile devices. Over the years Android has amassed its own collection of apps and users have continued butting heads over which system had the better selection.

Now, six Columbia University students have bridged the gap between the two platforms with something called Cider (via The Next Web). Not to be confused with the other Cider software (for OS X), the Android version of Cider essentially fools iOS applications into believing they’re running on an actual iPhone or iPad.

The video below demonstrates the software in action on a Nexus 7. As you can see, iOS applications run side-by-side with Android software as if they were real, native Android apps. Unfortunately the performance seems to be pretty horrible at this point. Aside from the performance issues, there are a few other problems. iOS apps can’t access most hardware, such as the GPS and cellular connection. Apps that rely on these missing functions will have to work without them.

When Apple Damns Your Texts to iMessage Purgatory

- gizmodo.com

iphone 5 1400034876 282244379

I recently switched from an iPhone to Android, and discovered shortly thereafter that my phone number was still associated with iMessage, meaning that any time someone with an iPhone tried texting me, I"d receive nothing, and they"d get a "Delivered" receipt in their Messages app as though everything were working as expected.

I spent the better part of a day trying to fix the problem on my own (mostly because Apple"s support tries to extort $20 from you unless you have a device with an active support plan), and eventually succeeded in getting my phone number removed from my Apple ID.

Great! But not, because it didn"t change anything. I"m still not receiving text messages from anyone with an iPhone.

So I called up Apple tech support again, using Ellen"s new iPhone 5c as my supported device (if she can"t text me, it"s a tech support problem for her, too, I guess). After 10 minutes walking through various steps I"d already taken and others that were completely impractical (Apple Support: "Can you try deleting the contact from your new iPhone and re-adding it?" Me: "I can"t tell everyone I know to delete and re-add me as a contact."), my tech support person told me that I was breaking up, and that she needed to call me back.

I hung up; she called me back, then explained:

This is a problem a lot of people are facing.

The engineering team is working on it but is apparently clueless as to how to fix it.

There are no reliable solutions right now — for some people the standard fixes work immediately; many others are in my boat.

In the meantime, Apple has completely hijacked my text messaging and my phone number portability (portability between devices, not networks). No one can fix this but Apple because it"s a problem at the device level, which means people in my position have no recourse but to wait for Apple to figure out what the problem is. But Apple isn"t offering any public support on the issue that I"ve been able to find (and it"s worth repeating that proper support is behind a $20 paywall for most people who"ve switched devices, who would also be the most commonly affected by this problem).

I thought iMessage was pretty novel when Apple launched it. Providers were charging an absurd mark-up on SMS delivery, and the switch between iMessage and SMS was seamless enough to be almost invisible to the user, save the green vs. blue bubbles, which are in their own way a sort of weird social/status indicator ("omg why doesn"t Nathan have an iPhone?").

But if it breaks, which it apparently has, it means Apple has crippled an entire medium for communication. Most of my friends have iPhones. My phone number hasn"t changed. But my number is now a black hole for text messages.

Apple Patents Wraparound Edge-Mounted iPhone Displays With Virtual Buttons

- techcrunch.com

iphone 5 1400005929 1348434966 Apple has a new patent granted today (spotted by AppleInsider) for a side-mounted wraparound display that could be used to add virtual buttons to the edges of future iPhones in place of physical controls. The display would run the circumference of the device, and offer up virtual versions of current physical controls, including volume up/down, but it would also make it possible for Apple to show a number of other controls and information away from the main screen. Some examples of what could appear on the side display include a slide unlock controller, or some app icons from the home screen or dock. Other options include music playback controls, and both caller ID and message summaries. In specific apps, like the calculator, additional functions may appear on the sides of the device, like the extended formula set for scientific calculator mode.

Analyst: Apple has reached deal with China UnionPay, could include NFC in iPhone 6

Analyst: Apple has reached deal with China UnionPay, could include NFC in iPhone 6

- 9to5mac.com

According to Shanghai Mobile analyst Frank Hill, Apple has reached a deal with mobile payment provider China UnionPay that would enable the next iPhone to make purchases at millions of supported Chinese point-of-sale devices. This would work in conjunction with NFC hardware said to be included in the next iPhone model.

UnionPay works with many of China’s major banks, and is the only domestic mobile payment company operating in the country. Several banks have reportedly been invited by UnionPay to participate in the development of a new system that is compatible with iOS devices.

While rumors of NFC in the iPhone have been relatively rare compared to some previous upgrade cycles, this isn’t the first time this year we’ve seen mentions of the technology finally making its way into Apple’s smartphone. Last month a report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo indicated that we’d see near-field communication in the upcoming device.

Sketchy supplier renders of 4.7-inch iPhone 6 surface online

- 9to5mac.com

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen rumored schematics for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 6, but this time we’re presented with a detailed set of 3D renders. These images are claimed to be the source of design for all of the recent dummy iPhone 6 units that we’ve reported on, and allegedly, from a supplier based on Apple’s design.

We’re a bit skeptical of these renders, as anyone should be when dealing with these types of leaks. These images were originally obtained by the Wei Feng network (via G4Games) from “informed sources.” These alleged 3D schematics include dimensions and look very similar to all of the mockups that we’ve seen in the past.

I’m constantly checking out new photography apps for the iPhone, and like many out there, my favorite remains VSCO Cam. There’s a new contender on the scene that was released this week, and it’s definitely worth trying if you like experimenting beyond VSCO’s filters.

A new video app from the Hipstamatic team also just came out in the App Store, and it has some of the best filters for mobile video I’ve come across.

Litely is made by Cole Rise, a professional photographer with an Instagram feed that will blow your mind. He also created four filters for the official Instagram app: Hudson, Sierra, Sutro and Rise.

Here are some of the shots he has used Litely to edit:

Apple hires lead Lumia camera engineer Ari Partinen, who worked on Nokia’s PureView cameras

- 9to5mac.com

On Twitter, Ari Partinen, a senior camera engineer at Nokia, has confirmed that he is leaving Nokia for Apple. The hire was first spotted by Engadget. Apple’s iPhone cameras are regarded as some of the best in the market, but Nokia’s PureView cameras have also been widely praised, which can produce pictures up to 38 megapixels in size.

The significance of the hire is a bit unclear. Partinen’s current title is ‘Lumia Photography Lead’ and has been in that role for roughly a year. His LinkedIn profile says he specialises in image quality and camera module tuning. Partinen is credited as one of the authors of a paper on PureView’s technology, which captures more megapixels than the target size, in order to improve image quality.

Working in field of mobile imaging. Currently I´m working with image quality characterization and tuning on camera module level. My current position has given me a good understanding of camera component production and quality control on global scale. I have also comprehensive knowledge about Image Quality testing and tuning on ISP level from very successful Nokia 808 PureView and Nokia N8 projects.

GT Advanced provides update on Apple Arizona partnership in latest earnings results

- 9to5mac.com

GT Advanced Technology has given an update on the status of its contract to supply Apple with sapphire displays for the upcoming iPhone 6 displays. According to the information provided with the company’s Q1 2014 financial report, Apple has already made three of four payments to GT Advanced for the sapphire, and GT notes that so far it is on track to meet demand.

Apple struck a deal with GTA last year to manufacture the sapphire displays that are expected to appear in the next-generation iPhone at a new plant in Mesa, Arizona. Earlier this year the plant was outfitted with enough sapphire crystal furnaces to create an estimated 100-200 million displays. At the end of April, Apple started sending its first shipments of sapphire to China, where the new iPhone models will be manufactured. These displays are expected to make their debut in the fall of this year along with two new iPhone models, each sporting a different size sapphire screen.

40,000 pounds of force makes an iPhone 5s crumble like cookies

- cultofmac.com

iphone 5 1399492923 1373979909

Thanks to its gorgeous aluminum construction and Gorilla Glass display, the iPhone 5s is one of the strongest, most robust flagship smartphones money can buy. If you drop it from a reasonable height, there’s a good chance it will remain in one piece — even if it’s not wearing a case.

But Jony Ive’s aluminum is no match for the crushing machine in the video below, which uses 40,000 pounds of force to make a sturdy iPhone 5s crumble like cookies.

The video was created by OnePlus to promote the new OnePlus One, a flagship Android phone that’s priced at just $299. It’s part of the company’s crazy Smash the Past campaign, which encourages people to demolish their existing handsets and make the switch.

[embedded content]

In some ways, the campaign makes sense — particularly with regards to the iPhone. The One has better specifications overall, including a larger 1080p display, and it’s significantly cheaper. But this video seems to suggest the One is better because it’s stronger than its rivals, and that’s not the case.

Nevertheless, there’s something strangely satisfying about seeing something that’s usually so tough get squished like that. I don’t condone it — there are far greater things to do with your old smartphone, and the iPhone’s too good to crush, in my opinion — but I’m somewhat ashamed to admit I enjoyed it anyway.

Seagate expands iPhone/iPad-connected Wireless Plus lineup to include 500GB & 2TB mobile external drives

- 9to5mac.com

Seagate announced today that it is expanding its Wireless Plus external hard drives to include both a larger storage capacity and a more affordable offering as well. Joining the 1TB Seagate Wireless Plus mobile external drive announced last year is a new 500GB drive creating a lower price point and a new 2TB drive doubling the storage capacity in the lineup…

Seagate’s Wireless Plus mobile external drives allow users to access movies, music, TV shows, photos, and other files stored on the drive from an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, or PC without using local storage on the smartphone, tablet, or computer (Seagate has its own app for iOS, Android/Kindle, and Windows Phone). Each drive is decked out with its own built-in battery rated for up to 10 hours of playback and supports streaming HD video to three devices simultaneously.

Each drive can also act as portable Wi-Fi hub to create a wireless network to be shared between up to seven devices. Seagate Wireless Plus drives can sync content automatically with Google Drive and Dropbox.

Both the 500GB and 2TB Wireless Plus drives are currently available for pre-order on Seagate’s web store as well as Amazon. The new 500GB model retails for $149.99 (Amazon Prime) while the new 2 TB model carries four times as much for $199.99 (Amazon Prime). Seagate’s existing 1TB model is currently in stock and available for $178.99 (Amazon Prime).
