Facebook is rolling out an update to its Paper app for iPhone users bringing a better photo sharing experience to the alternative News Feed app.

Starting with version 1.2.5, Paper will now support the new Favorites album from the Photos app introduced with iOS 8. This means you can easily find and post photos that you’ve favorited with the heart icon in Photos when sharing with Paper. The photo browser also makes finding photos and videos from your Camera Roll easier by organizing them chronologically.

Facebook also says the new version of Paper speeds up overall performance with faster responsiveness. Version 1.2.5 is the first update to Paper since last October when Facebook added iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus optimization. The alternative Facebook app for iPhone users launched nearly a year ago bringing a full screen layout and news reader features to the social network.

Apple’s quarterly profit set new world record for any company, says Standard & Poor’s

- 9to5mac.com

Apple didn’t just set a new record for the company when it beat every forecast in the Q1 results announced yesterday, it set a new world record for the most profitable quarter of any company in history, says credit ratings giant Standard & Poor’s. Its net profit of $18B far exceeded the previous record of $15.9B, set by oil company ExxonMobil back in 2012.

As TechCrunch noted, the number becomes a bit easier to grasp when you express it as a profit of $8.3M per hour. While revenue, profit and iPhone sales all exceeded even analyst expectations, the analysts were right about one key thing …

It had been predicted that high sales of the iPhone 6 Plus, together with more people opting for the middle storage tier after Apple doubled capacity to 64GB, would boost margins beyond the 37.5-38.5% forecast by Apple. This was indeed the case, notes the WSJ, averaging selling price rising year-on-year by $50 to $687, enabling Apple to hit a gross margin of 39.9%.

Pushbullet Is a Fantastic App Every Phone Should Have

Pushbullet isn"t new, but since I installed it maybe a year ago, it has sneakily gotten a lot better, especially for Android phones. And as I used to it to text from my browser for the umpteenth time yesterday, it struck me how great it"s really become. So maybe you"ve heard already but let me fire off a reminder: You should download this app.

At its heart, Pushbullet is a dumb simple app with one main purpose: Getting things from your phone to your computer, or from your computer to your phone. Pick up the app for any OS and install one of the extensions for just about any browser, link the two together and suddenly it"s child"s play to move anything from phone to laptop or vice versa. Just share using Pushbullet on your phone, or right-click virtually anything your browser to send it to any device. It"s dumb simple and infinitely better than emailing things to yourself.

Now if you"re an iPhone user, this is where the story ends. But if you"re on Android, it"s only the beginning. (Scratch that: Pushbullet just added complete iOS and Mac support today. Hell yes!)

Fandroids, have you ever looked at one of your hip Apple friends sending messages and texts from their computer while you seethe with envy as they reap one of the handiest benefits of living inside Apple"s walled garden? Pushbullet can"t bring you iMessages but it can bring you super easy browser-texting.

Just pull up the extension in your browser, and Pushbullet will connect to your phone to pull up a list of contacts you can text right there.

One Missouri Lawmaker Wants To Make Apple Pay Way Less Convenient

One Missouri Lawmaker Wants To Make Apple Pay Way Less Convenient

- gizmodo.com

One Missouri Lawmaker Wants To Make Apple Pay Way Less Convenient

Apple Pay survives on convenience. "Don"t worry about getting out your wallet or fishing in your purse. Just point your iPhone 6 at this register thing and be on your way!" Anything that disrupt that simple flow would pretty much doom the technology, such as asking customers for physical IDs every time you buy something for instance.

One Missouri lawmaker is proposing exactly that. This short report from a St. Louis Fox News affiliate, spotted by 9to5Mac, briefly outlines reprsentative Joshua Peters" plan to have customers provide a drivers license for additional identification when paying for something with a phone or tablet. Additionally, cashiers would have to record the numbers or be possibly held liable.

Although the bill was made with possibly good intentions by limiting commercial fraud from stolen smartphones, Apple Pay only works in concert with Touch ID using your fingerprint as a passcode. But I guess just in case your common everyday iPhone stealing criminal is also a world-class biometric hacker, this is a good thing. Not to mention that faking a physical ID would be much, much easier than fooling smartphone fingerprint censors.

Apple Pay has security vulnerabilities sure, but so does every payment system on the planet and introducing physical IDs isn"t going to help. In the end, this is a classic case of facepalm legislation that will likely and hopefully be killed in its infancy. [9to5Mac]

Tim Cook agreed to allow Chinese government to conduct security audits on Apple devices – local media

- 9to5mac.com

Beijing News reports that Tim Cook has agreed to allow China’s State Internet Information Office to carry out security audits of Apple products sold in the country. Cook reportedly made the offer during his meeting with China’s Cyberspace Administration minister Lu Wei in December.

China has long expressed suspicion over the security of Apple products, seemingly resulting from frosty relations with the U.S. Government. A state-run TV station in China described the iPhone as a “national security concern” last July due to its location-tracking capabilities. Apple responded by pointing out that location data is stored on the phone, not on Apple’s servers, and is encrypted …

China was also claimed to have banned government purchasing of Apple products last summer, though this was later explained as merely a temporary administrative matter.

The Chinese government was said to have been behind a phishing attack on iCloud, the government firewall redirecting all iCloud.com traffic to a fake server. This is believed to be one of the topics discussed in a meeting Tim Cook had in October with the Chinese Vice Premier Ma Kai.

No details were given regarding the nature of the security audits; reports state simply that Apple will cooperate with checks by Chinese officials.

China's Newest Apple Store Is A Calligraphy Masterpiece

China"s Newest Apple Store Is A Calligraphy Masterpiece

- gizmodo.com

[embedded content]

I am defiantly not an Apple Store kinda person. I"ve yet to queue up for the latest iPhone, certainly don"t aimlessly browse around during my lunch hour, and buy all my cases off Amazon. But Apple"s latest chunk of Cupertino on foreign soil would make me change all that.

For the opening of its latest store in Hangzhou, Apple drafted in calligrapher Wang Dongling to paint a stunning mural for the front of the store. The artwork is in fact a poem, "Praising West Lake in the Rain", a 2000-year-old work that celebrates the importance of the provincial capital.

The video above is pure Apple — soft stock footage, a story about the delicate balance between new and old, an excessive number of sunsets — but it doesn"t take away from what is honestly a neat idea. I mean heck, any change from two-storey metal and glass staircases is fine by me. [Apple via Gizmodo Australia]

BlackBerry Messenger for iPhone (it’s OK to laugh)

If you can’t beat ‘em, tell the government to force ‘em to let you beat ‘em. That’s the approach BlackBerry CEO John Chen wants to take to mobile software development. Today Chen wrote in a blog post on the BlackBerry website that he believes the issue of net neutrality requires the government to not only promote and protect neutrality not only among wireless and broadband carriers, but also among app and content providers.

Chen argues that it’s pointless to tell Comcast, Time Warner, Verizon, and other carriers that they can’t discriminate against certain data while still allowing applications and content providers to discriminate against certain platforms.

All The Fun Of Disposable Cameras, Without A Trip To the Drugstore

- gizmodo.com

All The Fun Of Disposable Cameras, Without A Trip To the Drugstore

Back before the days of selfie-sticks, or selfies or even the concept of front-facing cameras, humanity had plastic disposable cameras. You"d shoot your 20 photos, take it to the drugstore, rewind the film — yes, film — and walk out with 20 blurry holiday snaps of your own. WhiteAlbum is an app that"s trying to bring that experience back, but without having to pay a visit to Walgreens.

The idea is, you"ll use your smartphone (and the WhiteAlbum iPhone app) to take 24 photos. You only get one go — no trying 17 different angles to get the sun just so, and certainly no XProII to hipster-up that sunset. You get 24 clicks of the shutter button, and once they"re up, all the photos will be mailed to you for $20, anywhere in the world.

It"s a refreshingly different take on most apps, which are all about Getting You Stuff Right Now Without Having To Leave The Couch: WhiteAlbum trades your Instagram likes for a more physical memento you can stick on your wall (or in a dusty shoebox never to be seen again, for that matter). [PetaPixel]

App Developers In Crimea Are Getting Cut Off Thanks To U.S. Sanctions

- gizmodo.com

App Developers In Crimea Are Getting Cut Off Thanks To U.S. Sanctions

When one country annexes another, there"s some things you expect to happen, like airstrikes or strongly-worded letters to the UN. One consequence you probably wouldn"t have predicted is that you"ll no longer be able to spend $0.99 on certain apps.

In a (rather belated) response to the Russian annexation of the Crimea last year, President Obama signed an Executive Order on 19th December listing a new range of sanctions against the Crimea region. The move was meant to put the economic thumbscrews on Putin, but it"s had a rather unexpected result for the little people of the Crimea.

The sanctions prohibit the import or export of any "good, service or technology" from the U.S. to Crimea. Among other things, that means that app developers can"t make iPhone games any more, and Apple has been sending out emails to affected parties informing them. As TechCrunch reports, Crimean developers are banned from publishing apps, and have to stop using any Apple-provided software or tools immediately. Money owed to the developers for app sales has also been frozen in escrow.

Apple isn"t the first tech company to cut off the Crimea, either: Valve has apparently shut down Steam in the region, as well. Thanks to geopolitics and Putin, Crimean kids can"t play Call of Duty any more.

Presumably, however, the sanctions will apply equally to all tech companies, not just Valve and Apple. There"s no indication yet that Google or Microsoft have shut down developers for their app stores — in fact, a Crimean developer interviewed by Russia Beyond The Headlines said that "Crimean developers have no problems with Google".

In the meantime, affected devs are using fairly simple workarounds, like listing a Russian or Ukrainian address. But it"s still a fun (and depressing) reminder of how international posturing can affect even the lowliest Flappy Bird clone. [TechCrunch, Russia Beyond The Headlines]

Review: Truffol Station 5 USB Charger

- 9to5mac.com

We all have a ton of gadgets these days that are charged by USB, from iPhones and iPads to things as diverse as cameras, scanners and GPS units. The challenge can be finding enough USB ports to keep up, which is why I resort to a powered USB hub. It’s plastic and not exactly pretty, hence my interest in a rather beautiful-looking product from Truffol–the company behind the reversible USB cable we looked at last year.

The Truffol Station 5 is not a USB hub: there’s no socket to connect it to a Mac. It’s designed for one purpose only, and that’s to charge up to five USB devices at once. It differs from most other such devices in two ways: form and function …

The form is obvious. This is no cheap piece of plastic you want to hide away out of sight, this is something beautiful enough to look at home sat on your desk next to a Mac. The casing is mostly made from real wood, in a choice of cherry (above) and walnut, machine-milled then hand-polished to give a smooth finish. Beneath the wood is an anodised aluminum chassis, with a thick rubber pad at the bottom to stop it sliding around on your desk.

It measures around 11x6x4cm; I’ve photographed it with my iPhone 6 for scale. The quality of the fit and finish is excellent. Pick it up, and it has a reassuring heft to it. This both looks and feels like a quality piece of kit.

At the front are five USB sockets, which is there the function part comes in: while cheap chargers provide only 1A sockets, the Truffol Station is equipped with three of these plus two beefier 2.4A sockets suitable for charging iPads, power packs, Bluetooth speakers and the like.

Inside, there’s a built-in surge protector to keep your iDevices safe, and the separate power brick accepts anything from 100-220V, making it suitable for use anywhere in the world (with a suitable adapter). At the rear is just a power socket and a power button to toggle power on and off. The button, too, is made from wood.

Report: Apple May Be Creating a Stylus for the Rumored iPad Pro

Apple Insider reports that Apple may be considering its own stylus or iPen or Apple Pen or whatever for the upcoming iPad Pro, or is it the Air Plus? Like I said, it"s a big ole rumor party.

But this rumor happens to come from Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities. Yes, that Ming-Chi Kuo, the guy who"s known as the "world"s most accurate Apple analyst." He has Nostrodamused a couple of Cupertino"s secrets in the past, including Apple Watch release timeframes and specific iPhone 6 specs. Now, he"s focused on iPads, specifically how Apple"s mega iPad may soon have a new fancy stylus accessory.

KGI: Apple likely to sell stylus accessory alongside 12-inch ‘iPad Pro’

- 9to5mac.com

According to a new report by KGI, Apple will soon introduce a stylus accessory for its iPad products, targeted at the expected (but still officially unconfirmed) larger-screened ~12 inch iPad Pro. Both products are quoted for release sometime this year, with KGI most recently quoting a Q2 launch window. The stylus would apparently charge using a Lightning cable.

Although KGI reports tend to be based off of supply-chain sources, which have proven very reliable in the past, Ming-Chi Kuo does not allude to any such indicators for the stylus prediction report. Instead, he highlights a number of patent filings in recent years by Apple on tablet styli and a need to differentiate the upcoming more premium iPad aside from screen size.

Iphone Secrets To Get The Most From Your Device

Are you searching for new iphone apps to your phone?

If your iPhone gets wet, you can dry it with rice. You should of course avoid dropping your iPhone in water. Do not use a hair dryer. Instead, use a paper towel to wipe it. Then, place the phone in a Ziploc bag that is full of rice. After several hours, the rice will have absorbed all of the water.

How To Catch A Freight Train Ride To Freedom

How To Catch A Freight Train Ride To Freedom

Ever wanted to pack it all in, become a hobo and ride the rails? Dusty Blackthorn"s been doing that for the last 16 years. We caught up with the American in Guatemala and asked him how. He shared his best photos too. Don"t be an oog.

I was sitting on the side of a mountain — actually more of a volcano — in the western highlands of Guatemala, pointing a camera at stuff and climbing when a foreigner came into sight. Traveling with a troupe of Kaqchikel pilgrims, but sporting a shockingly white shaved head, backpack and cargo pants, he definitely stood out. I must have too because he walked over and introduced himself.

Dusty was heading south through Central America, hopping freight trains for transportation and ended up here because that"s just where the rails took him. We climbed some rocks, he gave me some advice when my girlfriend got pissed at me, then we had a chat about hitching freight trains.

I don"t know much about doing that, but I have read some Kerouac, London and Krakauer so, in my head at least, running alongside and jumping on one is about as American as apple pie.

How I Shot an Upside-Down Glacier in Antarctica

I travelled to Antarctica in December on vacation with my family. I brought along my camera rig to shoot the glaciers, ice and penguins. We saw thousands of icebergs of course, but only one revealed its gorgeous underside — the 90% "below the surface" you hear so much about.

Icebergs are typically white, like you see in pictures. This one had recently flipped over and had this arresting alien-green color to it. It looked a lot more like a parked spacecraft than a floating iceberg.

How to Stop Data Thieves From Stealing Information Off Your Old Gadgets

- gizmodo.com

How to Stop Data Thieves From Stealing Information Off Your Old Gadgets

Considering our collective thirst to upgrade to the latest shiny gadget, it"s not surprising that consumer electronics generate a nasty amount of waste—some 3.4 million tons of e-waste year. We are device-gobbling monsters who grow strong on the gleaming newness of our machines. But tossing out "old" devices creates an overlooked hazard.

You might think that cracked iPhone 3GS is literal trash, but the private details of your life can be another man"s treasure. If smartphones and computers aren"t properly recycled, the information stashed in our trashed electronics can be enormously valuable for dumpster-diving data thieves in the habit of hawking personal info.

Sure enough, many electronics recycling programs aren"t properly protecting digital detritus, dumping e-waste in startlingly irresponsible ways. Our discarded devices are often exported and siphoned into literal dumps, flooding Ghanian and Chinese landfills with unwiped hard drives. This provides desperate thieves with centralized collection areas to rifle through.

And they have, as Idaho Power Company found out the bad way in 2006, when sensitive corporate data wound up on eBay after an e-waste job gone wrong. The company participated in a hard drive recycling program but failed to scrub the drives before giving them to the salvage vendor. The salvage vendor also neglected to wipe the drives, resulting in hundreds of drives popping up on eBay still chock-full of confidential employee information and proprietary memos.

Then there are data thieves who straight up pose as e-waste companies. Last summer, the Reno police sent out a warning about a Craigslist posting claiming to offer free e-waste recycling that was suspected of siphoning data from people who fell for the scam. "This is a fraudulent post as the people do not have a City permit and will most likely take any computer, laptops or other electronic data collecting devices and extract personal information off of them," wrote police spokesman Tim Broadway.

Even when old electronics get picked up by someone who isn"t a thief, they can expose private information. The face of dumb damning data abandonment is Fabrice Tourre, a former finance ingenuine and grad student who self-identified as "the fabulous Fab."

In 2006, a woman was given a laptop her friend found in the garbage in New York. She didn"t think anything unusual was on the device, although emails from the previous owner—Tourre—kept coming in. Five years later, she saw Tourre"s name on the news as he, then a trader at Goldman Sachs, fought the SEC over mortgage securities. She turned the laptop over to the New York Times, giving the newspaper a huge resource for an expansive, damning report on Tourre.

Whether Tourre had been stupid enough to simply throw his laptop in the garbage without a password and hope for the best is still unknown, but either way, it was fished out. The fabulous Fab eventually paid back $825,000 for defrauding investors, and, though probably for the best justice-wise, the information revealed hurt both Tourre and Goldman Sachs and could"ve been avoided had Tourre not assumed that the garbage was a black hole where secrets can live.

Data thieves or innocent owners of used devices can too often freely rifle through the private information on old electronics, since many people don"t bother to delete everything off unwanted gadgets. But even if you go through the trouble of wiping your drives, it"s not going to stop a savvy data leech from recovering the lost data. There are software programs designed to help thieves extract data even after people have deleted files.

So what to do? Get the hammer out. It"s always smart to return devices to their factory settings, but it"s even more prudent to completely dismantle your electronics before turning them over to e-waste programs. As identity theft expert Robert Siciliano told USA Today, older electronics—like those running Windows XP—often retain data even after attempts to wipe. Security experts advise people to physically smash up hard drives before recycling computers. It"s the only fail-safe way to ensure data security.

But you"ve also got to recycle. New York City just passed a law that made throwing old electronics in the trash illegal, and other cities and states already have e-waste laws in place. As people look to avoid fines (and learn about why e-waste damages the environment) the recycling market is growing, and there are more ways to totally destroy items while still abiding by e-waste recycling laws. There are even things that exist in the world called Certificates of Destruction.

ShredIt, a document destruction company, is dedicated to turning hard drives FUBAR to make them theft-resistant. "We actually shred the hard drives and give them a certificate of destruction for each hard drive we destroy." But then the shredded drives are recycled according to the standards available. "Everything we do is certified, bonded, and insured," ShredIt spokesperson Carl Green told me.

Electronic Recyclers International is another e-waste team that recycles after destruction. It uses live video of the shredding process so people will know that their devices are thoroughly unusable. CEO John Shegerian is insistent that those steps are necessary for truly secure e-waste recycling:

"Transparency is key in e-waste recycling, especially when it comes to destroying data. A recycler"s capabilities and certifications should be obvious. If there are no obvious indicators and accountability measures proving the destruction of data, that"s a huge red flag. All legitimate recyclers will highlight these services."

There are two key certifications to look out for when you"re recycling e-waste to help prevent data theft. The R2 and eStewards verifications mean the programs have been assessed as legitimate. In addition, there are guidelines laid out by the U.S. Department of Defense and the National Institute of Standards and Technology for proper data destruction that e-waste companies can follow to ensure they"re covering their bases. The EPA provides a map of certified e-waste recyclers so you can avoid scammers.

"If your municipality has an e-waste recycling program, ask about its vendor and whether the recycler is certified," Shegerian said. "If you"re participating in an OEM take back program, make sure its transparent about the downstream process of your retired device. If there isn"t obvious information guaranteeing the security of your data, then that"s a major concern."

Like pretty much everything in life, cutting corners and not bothering to check vendors out or take precautions is both way easier than putting in more effort and also the quickest way to turn e-waste recycling into a shitshow and bonanza for data thieves.

LCD Soundsystem: "Dance Yrself Clean"

- gizmodo.com

[embedded content]

Recently, I did a weirdo thing that might seem dumb to the tech-savvy readers of Gizmodo. I dug up the hard drive that held the entirety of my iTunes music collection until age 23, deleted everything but the Music app off my retired (and very cracked) iPhone 4S, and essentially turned it into an iPod.

My actual iPod (Nano, 4G, orange) broke a couple years ago, late enough into the streaming revolution that it didn"t make sense to get a new one. I was too cheap to get a iPhone with more storage or a better data plan, so I just stopped listening to music on the go. I essentially replaced music with podcasts in my life. I got old(er). I stopped downloading music. My hard drive of music got lost in the dusty back corners of my desk.

That"s all to say that when I finally plugged that hard drive back into my computer this weekend, it was like opening a digital time capsule. I waited hours for iTunes to update my music library. (Has iTunes gotten worse? It"s gotten so much worse.) And then, finally, I was faced with all the playlists I made during college.

As terrible as college-era me was in other ways, my taste in music was not terrible. (It is also possible I have only gotten progressively less cool since then, so my music judgments are just entirely invalid. But anyways.) So now I am listening to an entire iPhone iPod full of my old music, and I"m reminded of how awesome LCD Soundsystem"s "Dance Yrself Clean" is. I used to blast this so loud as I walked down the street, shutting out everything but music.

Welcome to Soundtrack, what Gizmodo"s staff is listening to every night.

Ericsson countersues Apple over wireless technology licensing royalties

- 9to5mac.com

In response to Apple taking Ericsson to court over wireless patent licensing, the Swedish telecommunications company has filed a lawsuit in Texas that seeks the court to determine whether its licensing offer to Apple is fair. Ericsson told the court that it has been attempting to reach a new licensing agreement with Apple for over two years, but negotiations have failed to result in a deal. The patents in question are related to wireless LTE technologies that Apple uses in products like the iPhone and iPad.

Apple’s initial lawsuit against Ericsson in a Northern California district court calls for the LTE-related patents to be considered non-essential, allowing for the iPhone maker to continue using the wireless technologies in its products without further payment. If the court finds the patents to be essential, Apple requests that Ericsson only collect royalties based on the cost of the processors using the licensed technology, not the full price of the product being sold.

“We’ve always been willing to pay a fair price to secure the rights to standards essential patents covering technology in our products. Unfortunately, we have not been able to agree with Ericsson on a fair rate for their patents so, as a last resort, we are asking the courts for help,” Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet told Reuters on Tuesday.

Ericsson, the world’s largest provider of mobile network equipment, makes a significant portion of its revenues through licensing its exhaustive patent portfolio to companies like Apple. The company holds over 35,000 patents related to 2G, 3G and 4G wireless technologies. Last year, Samsung struck a deal with Ericsson that saw it pay $650 million and agree to further royalties for years to follow ending a similar licensing dispute.Filed under: AAPL Company, iOS Devices, Tech Industry Tagged: Apple, California, Ericsson, Lawsuit, LTE, patents, Texas, Wireless Visit 9to5Mac to find more special coverage of AAPL Company, iOS Devices, and Apple. What do you think? Apple takes Ericsson to court over LTE patents, claims royalties are too high

Apple has filed a lawsuit against Ericsson over the licensing fees for technology patents related to LTE wireless connectivity, Reuters reported today. According to Apple, the company has not infringed any of the patents in question, which it says are not essential to the LTE networking standard.

Ericsson calculates its royalty fees based on the price of a complete handset rather than only the component that integrates the patented technology.
