MobileMount Could Be The Best Stand Available For Your iOS Device, But It Isn’t - cultofmac.com
Born on Kickstarter, the MobileMount is a nifty little tool that allows you to mount almost any smartphone or tablet to a flat surface. Its design is simple; it consists of two suction cups that are held together by a ball and socket joint, so you can angle the stand in almost any direction while it’s mounted.
Both suction cups utilize a ‘turn-to-lock’ mechanism in an effort to ensure it’s super secure, and that your device never becomes unstuck. And because they’re just simple suction cups, you don’t need to remove cases or chargers from your device before you use them with the MobileMount — provided the case you’re

Office Drop Cloud OCR Comes To The Mac - cultofmac.com
Office Drop is kind of like a mission-specific Dropbox. It comes with Mac and iOS clients, and lets you upload and share your various documents between them. However, it has one big stinking extra which could be amazingly useful to some people: It performs automatic OCR (optical character recognition) on your stored documents.
What’s new here is the Mac client, which lets you upload documents to the Office Drop cloud service. This joins the iOS version, making Office Drop a great all-round syncing solution, as well as a neat OCR app.
The heart of Office Drop is this OCR. You use you iPhone or iPad to snap (scan) a photo of a document, clean it up and upload it. Once it

Review: WeatherSnitch 2 is a sleek, feature-packed weather app for the iPhone - 9to5mac.com
The iPhone comes with a pretty decent weather app, but many people find it to be lacking. Aside from the fact that it only predicts up to seven days of weather, many find its forecasts—which are powered by Yahoo!—to be somewhat inaccurate.
That’s a void that WeatherSnitch 2 is eager to fill. WeatherSnitch’s interface is packed with all the weather-related information you could possibly want, but presented in a neat and orderly way that makes sense.
The interface isn’t the only thing WeatherSnitch does well, though. All of the weather information comes from weather stations owned and monitored by SnitchWare,

Nokia has been alone on the vanguard of worthwhile Windows Phone hardware for a while now. But that's no longer the case. Here's HTC's 8X. And it's got enough firepower to go toe-to-toe with anything on Android or iOS.
What Is It?
An HTC phone built for Windows Phone 8.
Who Is It For?
Anyone who wants a Windows Phone, but doesn't feel up to the larger Nokia Lumia 920.

The 8X is a little thicker than the Galaxy S III, but its curved-in edges make it feel thinner than it is. It's so solid, it feels like an iPad 2 coated in soft-touch paint and shrunk to 4.3 inches.

Mu-Mu Cases Wrap iPhone 5 In Gorgeously-Crafted Wood - cultofmac.com
These gorgeous wooden iPhone 5 cases come from the U.K, and look like they’d cost you an absolute fortune. Amazingly, for something hand-crafted and exquisitely designed, they cost just £35, or $56. Sure, it ain’t cheap, but neither is it crazy.
The cases, previously available for the iPhone 4, have been elongated and slimmed down for your new iPhone’s pleasure. The case comes in two parts which — surprise! — slide together to enclose the rear and sides of the phone within. The case is made from laminated hardwood (plywood) for strength (and beauty, if you’re into plywood, which I most certainly am), and comes with little padded nodules within to

When Microsoft announced the Surface I was shocked. Not shocked because Balmer was doing something gutsy, but shocked because the Surface actually looks cool. Like, it’s probably the coolest looking tablet I’ve ever seen, other than the iPad, and if that crazy Touch Cover keyboard thing actually works well, then holy shit, the future is here.
Even though it’s not made by Apple, I had to try the “Surface with Windows RT” because I wanted to touch the future, and I really thought that maybe Microsoft was going to pull it off and create something that amazed me. After playing with the Surface and comparing it to an iPad though I found

Hyperscope, The High-Tech Low-Fi Can Camera - cultofmac.com
The Hyperscope: Even the name is awseome.
This amazing chunk of technology is – unbelievably – home made. It’s a camera, it is milled Apple-style from a single block of aluminum, and it’s called the Hyperscope. What’s not to love?
Biult by the very able Matt Abelson, the Hyperscope is a “can camera,” a pinhole camera built into an old beer can or similar, only it is clearly way more complicated than an actual beer can with a hole in the side.
If anything, the inside is even more impressive.
The point of the camera is to wrap the film into a curved shape to capture weird-looking, ultra-wide-angle pictures. But rather than just stuff in a roll of film

So many things are made in China: DVD players, handbags, adorable shoes, kitchen gadgets, watches, t-shirts, laptops, and more. Some of them are made in happy, shiny factories. Some are born out of deplorable labor conditions that ruin and cost lives. We usually don't know which.
But it's different with Apple and its widely publicized manufacturing process: From Cupertino, we hear about the meticulous process created to make your perfect iPhone and iPad mini. From China, we hear about how that process involves child laborers, impossible expectations, and brutal management. And we accept it. We didn't used to put up with Chinese

On a dark and stormy night, an employee of your local bookstore strolls into your home, starts tossing books you'd purchased over the last few years into a box, and - despite your protest - takes them all away without saying a word.
Thankfully that's not what happened to Linn Jordet Nygaard. Well, not exactly. The Norwegian woman found herself on the wrong side of bureaucracy, but the outcome was much the same (without as much mud on the carpet): Amazon turned off her Kindle account, blocking her from her own books. And they wouldn't tell her why.
"Two weeks ago my Kindle started showing stripes on the screen and I contacted Amazon support," Nygaard

Apple Store now has Lightning to HDMI and VGA adapters at $49 a pop, souped-up iPad charger - engadget.com We noticed during the iPhone 5 launch that Apple had a big caveat with its Lightning to 30-pin adapter: no video or iPod out support. Now that the new iPads are here with that same connector, the problem's been partially rectified -- for a sum. Namely, you can grab the Lightning to VGA or digital AV (HDMI) adapters for a rather princely $49, though there's no sign of any iPod support yet. If you're still holding out for generic models instead, you may want to rethink that plan, as there's a control chip inside each, and so far only Apple holds the authentication keys. Also, a new $19 12W USB power adapter (which connects

The U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) office, part of the Department of Homeland Security, recently revealed that it will be adopting iOS devices from a variety of service providers for its 17,676 users. It’s a win for Apple in terms of landing a sizeable government client, but also a significant vote of confidence for the overall security of iOS as a mobile platform, given the nature of the agency in question.
Here’s how a justification filing posted to the official Federal Business Opportunities government website describes the usage of these iPhones:

The iPad mini, leaked months before it debuts.
Earlier this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook famously said that Cupertino was going to “double down on secrecy” this year. It hasn’t worked. Apple — once a company known for the surprise “one more thing” — had every single detail of the iPhone 5 leaked to the public before the actual event. Can Apple ever get its secrecy back?
Probably not. A new report talking to a number of Apple employees under the condition of anonymity suggests that while Apple HQ is as secretive of new products as ever, Cupertino can do nothing about leaks that come out of the Asian supply chain.

Japan court rules Apple did not infringe two Samsung patents - engadget.com In the latest scuffle between Apple and Samsung, a Tokyo court has ruled that the iPhone 4 and 4S do not infringe on two of Sammy's patents. According to The Asahi Shimbun, a decision on September 14th found Apple had not violated a patent related to app downloads, as Samsung's method is different. Review: iPhoneography gear series: $15 Easy Macro Cell Lens Band - 9to5mac.com
Photo-editing apps have dominated the App Store ever since Apple’s iPhone launched in 2007, but they especially grabbed ahold of pop culture after famous photographers and photojournalists—such as Damin Winter’s prize-winning Hipstamatic Afghanistan war series and The New York Times’ Instagram summer series—advocated the iPhone as a premiere device for capturing special moments.
Here’s the thing, though: there are plenty of ways to beautifully snap an image or film a video with the iPhone that will contribute to the after-effects of apps. How so? iPhoneography gear.

We've seen evidence of a faster iPad 3 using the Apple A6 processor before and now 9to5Mac is reporting that Apple will announce a "refreshed version" of the full sized, 9.7-inch iPad with Retina Display at next week's event. It looks like we might be getting a new updated iPad sooner than we thought.
This is a little confusing because this new iPad won't be considered an iPad 4 but would be an iPad 3 with "improved internals" and the new lightning adapter. Rumors had pointed towards Apple updating their entire iOS line to include Lightning adapters, so updating the iPad 3 would make sense

iPhone Sales Last Quarter Could Have Exceeded Expectations Thanks To iPhone 5 - cultofmac.com
Guess what! The iPhone’s still a big seller.
The iPhone 5 has been a sell-out since it went on sale on September 21, and it’s still incredibly difficult to get hold of in some markets even a month later. With five million units sold, it’s the fastest-selling iPhone to date, so it’s no surprise one analyst is predicting that iPhone sales could be even better than originally expected.
Based on the number of iPhones Verizon activated last quarter, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster believes that non-iPhone 5 sales could be stronger that anticipated.
The carrier announced on Thursday that it activated 3.1 million iPhones during Q3

One of the biggest controversies surrounding the launch of the iPhone 5 has been the light scratching and chipping that some users have reported witnessing on the device’s coated aluminium backside. Apple’s Marketing Senior Vice President Phil Schiller called the scratching “normal” for aluminium products, as scratching on the coated surface reveals the natural silver color underneath making it more noticeable to users than an all-glass design. There have even been reports that quality control issues related to the scratching have lead to shortages and troubles in Apple’s supply chain.

One is an oldie but a goody, describing a Wii remote style 3D control mechanism that users sensors to determine its position in space, filed in 2006 (the same year as the Wii itself), and the other is a system for detecting, gathering and providing information about unauthorized users of a person’s iPhone or other mobile device.
The security measures are most interesting, and also most likely to produce some kind of tangible results users will see. Apple says in its patent that it could identify users based

Foxconn says it will fire the employees responsible for hiring underage workers.
Foxconn has admitted to finding underage interns as young as 14 working in one of its Chinese plants, where the minimum legal working age is 16. The company, which assembles Apple’s hugely popular iOS devices, has sent all underage workers back to their schools, and it’s now investigating how they were ended up at its plant.
Foxconn didn’t disclose how many underage workers it found at its factory in the eastern city of Yantai, but it did warn that any employee responsible for hiring underage workers will have their contract terminated.

iFixit tears down the new 7th generation iPod nano - 9to5mac.com
Last week we got a look inside the new fifth generation iPod touch thanks to our friends over at iFixit. Today they are taking apart the 7th generation iPod nano that Apple recently unveiled alongside the new iPod touch and iPhone 5 lineups. While it didn’t perform quite as poorly as the iPod touch in terms of repairability, it was still unable to outperform 7 out of 10 repairability score given to iPhone 5. Inside we see the usual suspects including flash memory from Toshiba and a TI touchscreen controller. However, a quick look at the nano’s internals shows a few anonymous, Apple-branded chips as well:

Logitech announces $200 Broadcaster WiFi webcam for iPhone, iPad and Mac (video) - engadget.com After trying (and failing) to surreptitiously shepherd it through the FCC, then seeing it leak out anyway, Logitech has formally outed the HD WiFi Broadcaster webcam. The 720P shooter (not 1080p as we hoped) allows wireless transmission from 50 feet away to any Mac computer, iPhone or iPad, instant broadcasting on Ustream and the ability to toggle between your device or computer's built in camera with a button push. The hard plastic carrying case with a magnetic lid doubles as a stand to elevate the cam, which Logitech says will "play nicely" with apps like iMovie, Final Cut Pro and FaceTime.

Ah, Instagram, iPhone, Hipstamatic—they've all done so well to provide "real" photographers with so much to condemn, scoff at, and look down on. You know what? Get over it.
Journalist and multimedia producer Richard Koci Hernandez, tired of the onslaught of photo-shaming, decided to take a stand with a video-essay and CNN article advocating for the state of modern photography. Hernandez points out the historical amnesia of today's authenticity police, and makes a passioned argument for why people feel compelled to 'dress' their photos in vintage stylings.

Samsung Gets Bigger Payday From Apple’s A6 Processor Production, But Kept Out Of Design - techcrunch.com
Apple and Samsung depend heavily on one another, despite the fact that they’re also at each other’s throats in intellectual property legal disputes around the world. But Apple is looking to reduce Samsung’s role in the manufacturing and design side of its business, in a move that could have greater long-term repercussions for the Korean electronics giant than for the iPhone maker.
The Korea Times reported this weekend that Samsung will no longer be involved in any part of its chip business other than manufacturing, according to a Samsung official who spoke to the publication on condition of anonymity. Previously,

The process is now simpler, as the latest version recognizes your already-installed iOS 6 OS and installs only the necessary jailbreak files, and Cydia is now installed automatically as well -- rather than needing a complex workaround like the last version. If you're willing to put up with the tethering and have an A4-powered iPhone 4, 3GS or gen-4 iPod touch device, the laundry list of how to do it is at the source below

With technology like NFC on the rise, you might think the humble barcode might not be long for this world. As it turns out, that old medium has at least one more trick up its sleeve. Going tactile and operating with sound just might be what it takes to make barcodes cool (again?).
The premise is simple, just like running a stick across a picket fence, running a finger, a pen, or a phone across a series of grooves creates a unique, identifiable snippet of sound, like Morse code for machines. An app can easily convert the different dots and dashes to a data value, similar to the bars and spaces of a

Unfortunately, consuming data while roaming tends to get extremely expensive very quickly. Recently, U.S. carriers have become a lot more reasonable with data plans, but it’s far from perfect. Usually, you pay about $25 for 100 MBs

It involves physically etching a barcode-like pattern onto almost any surface, so it produces sound when something's dragged across it -- a fingernail, for example. A computer is then fed that sound through a microphone, recognizes the waveform and executes a command based on it. US court reverses Apple’s injunction on Samsung Galaxy Nexus - 9to5mac.com
U.S. Judge Lucy Koh granted Apple’s request for a preliminary injunction against Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus smartphone in June, and the decision resulted in the temporary removal of the device from Google Play pending a software fix with Android 4.1. Today, Reuters reported that Apple’s U.S. injunction on the Galaxy Nexus has been reversed. TheNextWeb got its hands on the official order:
Samsung argued, somewhat humiliatingly, that the sales of the Galaxy Nexus were so poor that they didn’t pose a threat to Apple’s iPhone and that the unified search feature was not essential to the success of its device. The appeals court apparently

More than just a case.
While the purple lens flare that sometimes (rarely?) spoils your iPhone 5 photos is completely normal, it can still be somewhat frustrating — especially if you don’t notice it until you upload your photos to iPhoto, by which time it’s too late to take the shot again. But a new iPhone 5 case called the camHoodie promises to “greatly reduce” that purple lens flare and leave your photos looking flawless.
From Illinois-based Fotodiox, the camHoodie is a $24.95 case made from plastic, that uses a special lens cover to reduce the purple lens flare issue that sometimes affects photos taken on the iPhone 5. Essentially, the

Apple Stores to begin stocking iPhone 5 cases later this month - 9to5mac.com
With the help of a lack of an Apple-manufactered iPhone 5 case, Apple’s retail stores have so far lacked any sort of iPhone 5 covers.
However, Apple Stores will begin stocking a slew of third-party cases for the iPhone 5 later this month, according to multiple sources.
Our sources say that Apple is currently scheduled to begin selling these cases the week of October 22nd, but this date could shift depending on supplies from Apple’s case partners.
“Good, now people can stop asking me about iPhone 5 cases,” said one Apple retail store employee who we briefed on the news.

RockMelt social browser comes to the iPad, offers up news stories tailored to your interests - engadget.com Remember RockMelt The "social web browser"? The name doesn't come up often, especially when we talk about conventional browsers like Firefox, Chrome, IE and Safari. Well, rest assured, the startup is still alive and kicking: after releasing an iPhone app earlier this year, it's introducing an iPad version as well. As ever, the browser is built around social networks like Facebook and Twitter, but instead of emphasizing chat and status updates, it's all about using your social network to help curate a newsfeed that matches your interests. T-Mobile to drop ‘iPhone’ references from ‘Bring Your Own Device’ campaigns? - 9to5mac.com.
Right before Apple was set to launch the iPhone 5 in mid-September, the nation’s fourth-largest, iPhone-less carrier T-Mobile prepared an aggressive campaign to capture iPhone users on its network. Coincidentally launched on Sept. 21, T-Mobile promises up to $1,200 in savings over AT&T for unlocked iPhone users. T-Mobile even has a nano SIM just for those making the switch, along with trained T-Mobile salespeople who are able to instruct users on unlocking in-store. They will not physically open the devices, however. This is an unprecedented move—especially for a device that T-Mobile does not officially

Samsung mobile head confirms 4-inch Galaxy S III mini announcement tomorrow - engadget.com It looks like the rumored Samsung Galaxy S III mini is real, and it will make its debut at an event in Frankfurt, Germany tomorrow. Mobile chief JK Shin said that the company believed there was demand "in Europe" for a cut down 4-inch version of the popular smartphone, which would otherwise carry the same specs of the original. That would give the company a high-end smartphone with an iPhone 5-esque form factor for folks who don't want to wedge the original 4.8-inch model into their pockets. Pricing and stateside availability wasn't mentioned, but Shin did say that launching the product in Korea was also "under consideration." Naturally,

Remember how awesome this was?
Sega has announced that arcade classic Crazy Taxi is coming to iOS devices this month. It hasn’t given us a whole lot of information on the game — none at all, in fact — but it’s expected that the title will be a complete port of the original Dreamcast hit, with the original (and awesome!) Offspring soundtrack.
Sega has provided us with a very brief teaser trailer, which — like its blog post — doesn’t give us a great deal of information. But it does promise that the title will be arriving this month on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Tonight—a big technology patent deep-dive by The New York Times (non-paginated), with some super-interesting reporting and lots of Apple sourcing. (Interactive: Three Apple patents that were involved in recent lawsuits and a new version of the patent war map.) Some interesting notes:
Vlingo, which is the engine behind Samsung’s S-Voice Siri competitor, almost went bankrupt defending itself from Nuance. Winning one case cost it $3M and forced it to sell itself to Nuance.
In 2006, Apple settled with Creative over the original iPod MP3 player design.
