Apple Watch to be managed by a dedicated iPhone app, Watch apps are installed from the phone

- 9to5mac.com

As part of an extensive hands-on by Ariel Adams, the piece shines some light on how the Apple Watch is controlled and managed. At the media event, Apple showed a wide variety of watch apps … but did not mention how they get onto the watch itself.

Adams’ post says that users download Apple Watch apps through a central hub app on the iPhone. Rather than having an App Store UI on a tiny watch screen, users install content on the device from their phone. This is similar to how iPods are managed via the iTunes app on a Mac or PC.

Apple Watch users will install an Apple Watch app on their iPhone, which will be used to download apps onto the watch as well as likely manage Apple Watch settings. A user’s iPhone is also used to help with computational demands. Apple cleverly pushes a lot of processor needs to the phone in order to preserve Apple Watch battery life.

Apparently, the phone will also dedicate some of its processing power to handle complicated or computationally-intensive tasks. This means that the Apple Watch battery can be drained as little as possible. For instance, the iPhone may do the deep analysis of incoming health data sending only the results to the Watch, for display. Apple has vaguely suggested that the Apple Watch will have about one day of battery life.

Secret developers launch new notification-focused app called Ping

- 9to5mac.com

The developers behind the controversial Secret social app have launched another piece of iOS software today. The new app is called Ping and its entire purpose is to send you notifications when certain events happen. It’s essentially like an automated version of Yo.

When you first launch Ping, you’ll be presented with a screen that allows you to choose what topics you want to be notified about. This can be anything from weather updates to “pickup lines for Friday night.” After you’ve picked a few topics to subscribe to, you close the app and wait. When there’s a change to one of those topics, you’ll get a push notification.

There’s not really much to the application beyond that. New topics can be pushed over-the-air by the developers, and you’ll be notified when new ones become available (several new ones have been added just since the app launched a few hours ago). The developers say that as you use the application it will learn to adapt to what you like or don’t like based on your usage.

Ping is free on the iOS App Store.Filed under: Apps Tagged: app, iPhone, Ping, secret, software For more news on iPhone, Apps, and app continue reading at 9to5Mac.What do you think? Discuss "Secret developers launch new notification-focused app called Ping" with our community.

HealthKit support added to WebMD, Carrot Fit, Yummly, more

- 9to5mac.com

In addition to FitPort and MyFitnessPal, a few more app updates with HealthKit support have become available on the App Store. These updates allow you to share health and fitness data with Apple’s new Health app on iOS 8 now that Apple has enabled HealthKit with the release of iOS 8.0.2 after issues in iOS 8.0 and iOS 8.0.1.

First up is WebMD for iPhone. Users of the WebMD iPhone app can now allow the health information service’s Healthy Target feature to communicate with data shared with Apple’s health app. The benefit to this is WebMD uses this information to create “actionable insights on your health data”. WebMD’s update was previously available on iOS 8 launch day until Apple pulled HealthKit-enabled apps due to a late-discovered bug.

Carrot Fit is another app affected by the launch day issue, but its back today with full HealthKit integration. The unconventional workout app uses data from Apple’s Health app to monitor workouts, weight, and dieting for monitoring your fitness. This is how Carrot describes Fit’s HealthKit integration:

Thanks to HealthKit, you can run but you can’t hide from CARROT because she can now track fitness activities performed throughout the day — even when you’re not actively using her. She will give amusing feedback when you step on a wifi scale with a HealthKit-compatible app, and threaten you with total annihilation if you’re lagging behind on your daily step goal.

Make CARROT angry, and you will activate her new “calorie shaming” punishment — she will start making jokes about the foods you eat as you enter them into a HealthKit-compatible calorie counter app.

Carrot Fit is available for $2.99 on the App Store, and HealthKit support is a free update for existing customers.

You can also find HealthKit integration with Yummly, a free recipe and grocery shopping list app for iPhone. By integrating with HealthKit, Yummly is able to do two things: share information about meals and nutrition data with Apple’s Health app, and look at data shared with Apple’s Health app from other apps for making smarter recommendations for meals and recipes.

FitStar Personal Trainer, the fitness app loaded with workouts and videos from football star Tony Gonzalez, has also been updated with HealthKit support.

Several more apps with HealthKit support should be rolling out over the next few days as developers can now submit HealthKit-enabled apps. Remember: these updates require iOS 8.0.2 to use HealthKit and Health. Let us know below if you spot any or have any recommendations, and stay tuned for comprehensive list of HealthKit apps as more become available.Filed under: Apps Tagged: Carrot Fit, diet, exercise, fitness, Health, HealthKit, WebMD, Yummly For more information about Apps, Health, and fitness continue reading at 9to5Mac.What do you think? The quality assurance manager responsible for iOS 8.0.1 also oversaw—you guessed it—Apple Maps

- 9to5mac.com

Bloomberg has uncovered details of what went wrong at Apple and who is to blame for the botched release of the iOS 8.0.1 update yesterday, citing sources who point to a quality assurance manager named Josh Williams. According to the report, Williams was also the individual responsible for hunting down any crucial bugs in the iOS 6 Maps software, which debuted to a chorus of negative reviews and bad press.

Williams was reportedly taken off of the Maps team when the bugs became public, but he was left in charge of general iOS bug testing, where he leads a team of over 100 people in making sure that each release is up to snuff. These updates are often in development before new devices even come off the assembly line, but because the quality assurance teams don’t always have access to them, they’re unable to test the software with the new hardware.

Apple publishes new support article with instructions on downgrading from iOS 8.0.1, says update coming soon

- 9to5mac.com

Earlier today Apple released what would quickly be revealed to be an extremely broken update for iOS 8 that resulted in a complete loss of cellular connectivity and Touch ID support on its newest line of iPhones. Now, nearly twelve hours after the update went live, the company has published a new help document for users stranded on the faulty operating system.

The document lists the steps for restoring a device back to iOS 8.0 with links to download the appropriate IPSW file. Interestingly, the page notes that the Health application will stop working, likely due to changes that were made in 8.0.1 and cannot be reverted to work on the older firmware. The notice also points out that it is crucial to back up your device in the iTunes app for Mac or PC rather than to iCloud, as iCloud-based backups will not restore to the older version.

From the iPhone to the iPad, immediate reactions are always mixed on new Apple products, as the public struggles to wrap its head around Cupertino’s next bold idea. And so we hear a lot of warrantless criticism until the product actually lands on shelves.

One refrain we’re hearing a lot from Apple Watch critics is that Jony Ive may have dropped the ball with the Apple Watch design. The problem? To these critics, the Apple Watch’s casing looks shockingly thick.

As it turns out, though, this is largely an optical illusion. The Apple Watch isn’t really any thicker than a Rolex.

Apple: Almost 50% of the iOS devices that visited the App Store Sunday were iOS 8 (9to5Mac readers: 80%)

Apple isn’t bragging on its iOS 8 adoption numbers like it has in years past because it appears uptake has been slightly slower. The reason? The much bigger iOS 8 download doesn’t fit on many people’s devices which are often stuffed to capacity with music, movies, photos and apps.

(Hint: Here’s how to slim some GBs off your iOS 8 device or install or install via iTunes on a Mac/PC which doesn’t require extra space)

Apple’s latest numbers are for Sunday September 21, 2014 and show that from people who visited the App Store on their iOS device, 46% were already on the new iOS 8.  On one hand this number is skewed higher because most of the early adopter nature of frequent App Store visitors but on the other hand many people visit the App Store from older devices that can’t be updated to iOS 8.

Apple’s own numbers show something else slightly troubling. App Store app submissions are being delayed slightly as of iOS 8 launch with only 74% of app updates and 53% of new apps being reviewed. Apple is usually in the high 90% range on iOS as it is with Mac.

As for 9to5mac readers’ iOS adoption, the numbers are much much higher than the general audience as you’d probably expect. This morning, we’re close to 80% iOS 8 adoption. The pie chart from Google Analytics taken at 5:30 am ET is below:

8 Videos of New iPhones Getting Dropped, Soaked, and Torture Tested

- gizmodo.com

[embedded content]

You knew it was coming. Videos of people torturing the newest rash of iPhones are starting to emerge online, including one by SquareTrade, which shows the new iPhones being tortured in every way imaginable. So how did Apple"s latest crop hold up? Surprisingly well, with a few caveats.

Though SquareTrade"s video is clearly motivated by its business—namely, selling warranties for your new iPhone—it"s still a lot of fun to watch. In the video, both phones are put through a series of tests: First, a "slide test" to show how well the phones could endure when skidding across plastic or wood (pretty well, with very few scratches). Then, a dunk tank, where each phone survived several seconds underwater (though audio playing cut out before returning after 30 seconds).

Then, the real doozy: The drop test. Each phone endured half a dozen drops from the height you"d hold it while standing (roughly four feet). The iPhone 6 survived with only a few dings, while the 6 Plus had a structural problem in which the screen actually detached from the aluminum body. Overall, though, the SquareTrade team described these phones as Apple"s "most durable yet."

Several other torture test videos have popped up online too, naturally. Here"s a sad, sad test of an iPhone 6 being dropped in a full sink:

While PhoneBuff"s drop test is slightly less scientific, but gives us a good look at exactly how scuffed and dented the bodies of the new phones get when dropped:

iphone tips and tricks 1411354899 1391964387

Earlier this week, I stumbled upon a story that made me double take. Apple had apparently approved a 4k video capture app for iOS 7 for the bargain price of $1000.

By stitching together 4K images at 24 frames per second, the app provided one of the only ways to get 4K content out of your iPhone 5s. This high-res video also stored information at 72MB per second, meaning you"d better make room on your phone if you wanted to capture video at all. Also, it only currently works for iOS 7 so upgrading to Apple"s new software would cost you your $1000 prize. In the end, is it worth it? No, probably not. But then again, what apps are out there that are worth shelling out top dollar?

A few pieces of mobile software that stretch into triple digits can be worth it. Take for instance, the $100 knfbReader app that can take text from a photo and read it out loud as speech. This app has life-changing applications for the blind, its intended demographic. According to Reuters, the app is the result of a decades long partnership with the National Federation of the Blind and Ray Kurzweil, director of engineering at Google.

The most money I"ve ever dropped on one app was $10 and even that was because I had an iTunes gift card. (What can I say? I"m cheap.) However, my experience with TapeACall Pro has been well worth it, especially since I spend a lot of time on over-the-phone interviews. But are there expensive apps out there that are worth it but are locked behind a scary monetary commit? A crappy free app is easy enough to delete, but a crappy paid app is the worst. Last week Android extended its app return policy to two hours, so even if you do get stuck with a pricey-yet-craptacular app, you can still get your money back.

So now I"m feel a little more adventurous. What have been your favorites and what have been your horror stories? It"s time I investigated the pricier side of smartphone software.

iOS 8 How-to: Take a time-lapse video

- 9to5mac.com

New in iOS 8 you have the ability to record time-lapse photography right from the Camera app. Time-lapse photography is a type of photography that happens when the frame rate is lower than what is used to view the sequence. When the photo is played at normal speed, time looks to be faster. However, not everything would make a great time-lapse subject. Good time-lapse subjects include cloudscapes, celestial motion, plants growing, cars driving on a busy intersection and of crowds. In this how-to I will discuss how to make a time-lapse photographs.

First iPhone 6 Buyer Does an Accidental Drop-Test on TV

- gizmodo.com

iphone 4 1411110112 739387148

It"s iPhone 6 launch day, which of course means that YouTube will be full of drop tests by lunch time. But the very first buyer, coming out of the iPhone store in Perth, decided to beat them all to it.

[embedded content]

According to the local news reporter, "Jack" was so excited to get his shiny new iPhone 6 out of the packaging and into his sweaty paws that it got dropped onto the sidewalk — thankfully, not shattering the screen in the process. Although it might not have the quite the same scientific spirit-level precision as some drop-tests, it does bring a kind of rushed amateurism and unforced emotion to the drop-test genre that I think has been missing thus far. iPhone 6 lines have gotten absolutely nuts in the build up for tomorrow launch, but people in Australia are already heading home with the very first iPhone 6 units, but the first person to buy one in Perth almost had to go back in for another.

Moments after a young boy named Jack Cooksey left the Perth Apple Store with one of the first iPhone 6 unit’s ever sold in the world, he was swarmed by local news aiming to get the first look of the bigger than big display in his hands. Struggling to release his prize from its pristine white tomb, Jack’s excitement shook the box open as cameras watched the iPhone 6 slip out and slam onto the concrete.

Jailbreak tweak developer releases three new iOS 8 widgets for monitoring your calendar, weather, and more

- 9to5mac.com

In March we reported on a new jailbreak tweak called ProWidgets that introduced a whole suite of widgets to the iOS 7 Notification Center. With today’s release of iOS 8, Avanio Labs, the company created by Alan Yip, has released several native widgets for the new operating system. These new add-ons will help you keep track of your calendar and to-do list, monitor the weather, and perform a ton of useful actions on the text stored in your clipboard.

The first of these is Agenda+, which you can see in the screenshots above. Agenda+ combines a list view of your calendar events with a summary of your iOS Reminders. iOS typically breaks these two up into separate widgets, with the Calendar widget showing a full timeline of your day (which can take up a lot of space depending on how many events you have and how late in the day they are).

iOS 8 Now Available, But Plan To Be Patient

- techcrunch.com

iphone 1410987796 1139209060 Apple’s iOS 8 mobile operating system is now rolling out to devices eligible for the update. It’s available both over-the-air, and by plugging your device into iTunes for a wired update, but don’t panic if you can’t see it right away, or if you’re having trouble actually downloading the software: Apple typically stages the rollout of big updates like this one to ease the strain, and there’s going to be tremendous demand on their servers for tat least the next several hours. To prepare for your iOS 8 update, you should definitely plug in and back up, using iCloud if that’s your preferred method, or by syncing to your computer. It might be a good idea to do both if you’re extremely paranoid about losing your data. I’m partial to the “clean slate” approach, where you start fresh and reinstall only the apps you find you need.

For a wireless update, navigate to ‘Settings,’ then ‘General’ and then ‘Software Update,’ and if it’s available to your device, it should load and prompt you to install. If you don’t have somewhere close to a full charge, plug in before you begin the process.

Other tips for a smooth update include paying attention to the prompts once the update installs and you’re taking through the setup process for the new iOS 8 features. One will ask you if you want to Upgrade to iCloud Drive, and this is a crucial one: it will make it so that your existing cross-platform iCloud data syncing will only work if all your devices are either on iOS 8 or OS X Yosemite. Yosemite isn’t yet available, so this could break syncing between iOS and Mac apps that share data, like task management app Clear.

iOS 8 brings a lot of new features, so expect your favorite apps to be updating throughout the day to add compatibility with the new software, and possibly introduce Extensions that work with the sharing menu of other apps, and with Notification Center. Also, my advice is to go nuts with the various third-party keyboards available – this is a new freedom afforded iOS users, so you may as well take a look around.

Court throws out $368 million judgement against Apple in VirnetX patent lawsuit

- 9to5mac.com

Recode reports that a federal appeals court today threw out a previous ruling granting VirnetX Holding Corp $368.2 million in damages in its long-running patent lawsuit against Apple:

Apple had appealed a November 2012 jury finding that it infringed VirnetX’s patents for virtual private network, or VPN, technology through the FaceTime feature on its iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad products, as well as on its Mac computers… While agreeing that some patents were infringed, the appeals court said the verdict was tainted by incorrect jury instructions from the trial judge on how to calculate damages, and that the error was not harmless.

The case previously resulted in Apple changing the behaviour of its VPN On Demand feature in iOS after it lost the initial patent case to VirnetX.

The case isn’t over yet, however, as both companies will return to U.S. District Court in Tyler, Texas work out what damages Apple will ultimately be on the hook for. VirnetX shares were down significantly today following the news. Filed under: AAPL Company Check out 9to5Mac for more breaking coverage of AAPL Company. What do you think? PayPal takes a swipe at Apple Pay security over iCloud celebrity photo leaks

- 9to5mac.com

PayPal appears to be calling out Apple and its newly announced mobile payment service Apple Pay with an ad appearing in The New York Times print edition (via Pando Daily) indirectly reminding people of last month’s disastrous iCloud photo leak when a list of celebrities found their personal photos an intimate situations published on the web. The ad reads “We the people want our money safer than our selfies,” but PayPal isn’t without its own security issue in the past.

Apple already has over 500 million iTunes account with most having credit cards, the company says, and iCloud features like iCloud Keychain manage and utilize credit card data for auto-completing credit card information.

Starting next month, Apple will handle mobile payments in physical retailers and venues for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users, though, with Apple Pay. Apple says it never sees data about the transaction, though, which is secured using a combination of NFC, the iPhone’s secure enclave, and Touch ID fingerprint reader.
