Adobe VideoBite, a bite-sized video editor for iPhone, now allows titles, photos & music

- 9to5mac.com

Adobe VideoBite, an iOS app designed to make video editing as quick and easy as possible, has been updated to allow titles, photos and music to be added, turning it into a fully-fledged editor while retaining its simple user-interface.

Heartwarming Apple ads aside, I’ve always been rather skeptical of the real-world practicality of video editing on a phone, but I have to confess that VideoBite does make it a very slick process. Trimming clips, for example, involves nothing more than pressing a heart icon at the beginning and end of the bit you want to keep. Adding transitions and music is just as easy, and your finished masterpiece is saved to your camera roll, with exports to Facebook, YouTube and email also supported …

While the app runs on the iPad also, its real strength is making the most of the limited screen size of an iPhone or iPod Touch.

Adobe VideoBite is a free download from iTunes. The only in-app purchase is an optional subscription to the Adobe Reveal video-sharing service.

Apple Patents Sapphire Component Production Method As Manufacturing Facility Ramps Up

- techcrunch.com

smartphones 1391088877 517538878 Apple is moving fast on securing intellectual property related to the making and usage of sapphire glass, filing another patent related to the material recently that has been published by the USPTO today (via AppleInsider). Previously we saw Apple file a patent for a method of attaching sapphire glass display windows to a device, and now its looking to insure that its method for manufacturing and shaping the material into forms usable in gadgets are legally protected. The patent is fairly technical, describing how sapphire can be grown, the collected and polished down into wafers, as well as treated with various coatings including oleophobic coatings (the kind used on the iPhone to prevent fingerprints) and ink masking (presumably to enable printing of logos and other elements on the sapphire). Sapphire is a difficult material to work with in terms of manufacturing electronics, since it’s hardness makes traditional methods of cutting and shaping it more challenging.

Apple’s methods include using lasers to cut the sapphire into usable chunks, and it specifically mentions smartphone displays as one potential application. To get the material to where it needs to be for use in assembling phones and other devices, it describes a means by which it’s grown and then turned into cores which can be sliced into wafers. Those wafers can be sliced using lasers, which is both cleaner and faster than using machine grinding, which could be a clue into how Apple plans to make manufacturing sapphire components at scale cost-efficient.

A new report from 9to5Mac says that Apple is keen on ramping up its sapphire manufacturing plant in Arizona, which it will be running with GT Advanced Technologies as part of a $578 million deal. The facility should be live by February, according to 9to5Mac, and it will aid in producing “a new sub-component of Apple products,” say documents obtained by the blog. An earlier report also said that Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn was already doing test production runs using sapphire glass screens in assembling iPhones.

Apple gearing up for sapphire use on both the IP and the manufacturing front is a pretty safe sign that we’ll see this component feature prominently in future designs. In terms of timing, it’s likely that at this point we’ll have to wait until late this year before anything reaches consumers, but the wheels are turning, and the result could be much more durable devices.

Facebook Paper For iPhone Is More Than Just A Beautiful Newsreader

- cultofmac.com

iphone 3 1391088866 306418442

Facebook today announced a new standalone iPhone app called Paper, and you’ll be pleased to hear it’s nothing like any of the Facebook apps that came before it. Paper’s main focus is to make all the news you’re interested in easy to access it, but it’s much more than just a newsreader; in fact, it does enough to replace the regular Facebook app for more users.

At first glance, Paper looks a lot like Flipboard. You’re greeted by a grid of stories, and you can scroll and flip through them to find the ones you’re interested in. But in addition to bringing you news from traditional stories — like TIME Magazine, The Huffington Post, or the New York Times — it also displays news from your Facebook news feed.

So you can keep track of what’s happening not only within your circle of friends, but also around the world. Paper lets you “like” and comment on stories from your news feed, browse photo albums uploaded by your friends, and watch videos — and you can even use it to upload your own posts.

Paper is customizable, so can tell it what kind of news you’re interested in, and that’s all you’ll see. It’s mainly controlled using some simple gestures, and it has some nifty effects and features, such as the ability to pan across wide photos by tilting your iPhone side to side.

[embedded content]

Paper for iPhone will available to download on Wednesday, February 3. It will initially be available in the U.S. only, and there’s no word on support for other platforms just yet.

Apple aggressively pushing to take Arizona sapphire plant live in February for ‘critical’ product component

Apple aggressively pushing to take Arizona sapphire plant live in February for ‘critical’ product component

- 9to5mac.com

In November of last year, Apple announced that it would be opening up a new manufacturing plant in Mesa, Arizona. Since that time, little information has come out about the plant except that it would be utilized to manufacture sapphire crystal for future Apple devices. The plant will be operated by Apple in tandem with GT Advanced Technologies. Earlier this year, we learned via (now removed) Apple job listings that the plant would involve components for future iPhone and iPod product lines.

Now, analyst Matt Margolis has worked with us to track down documents showing correspondence between U.S. Foreign Trade Zone officials and Apple’s Deputy Director of Global Trade Compliance. The documents were made public today by the Foreign Trade Zones Board. The papers indicate the materials Apple will utilize to manufacture sapphire, share details about Apple’s “aggressive” plan to take the facility live, and provide a description of how the sapphire will be used in future Apple products…

Speculation and circumstantial evidence points toward possibility of Apple using solar in upcoming products

- 9to5mac.com

Image: 1iphone5wallpaper.com

There has long been speculation about Apple incorporating a solar panel into its products, both for environmental reasons and to boost battery-life. There have been Mobile-Solar Apple Jobs that have vanished after discovery, tons of patents, trial rumors and of course the Solar effort/expertise on Apple’s Data Centers and new Campus 2 building. This week, Seeking Alpha has a highly speculative piece by Matt Margolis suggesting that the evidence may be mounting for the iPhone 6 being the product Apple uses to bring the Solar idea to market.

Before we get too far into the speculation, it is worthwhile to note that the surface area of an iPhone would hardly be enough to keep a charge let alone recharge a phone even with the most efficient solar technology in labs today. However, all of the evidence weighed together might make you forget all of that ‘science’…

Popular lyrics site Rap Genius launches new Genius app for iPhone

Just a month after Rap Genius got stung by Google for gaming search engine results, the lyrics and annotation site is delivering its popular service to iOS users with the launch of its first iPhone app.

While it features an optimized view of its annotated lyrics service its known for, it also has a Shazam-like feature for picking out the music playing around you. If you have music saved to your iPhone in the Music app, Rap Genius will pick songs it has lyrics for and present those to you as well. The music discovery feature was a bit hit-or-miss for me and a rather limited number of songs from my Music app appear, but the lyrics service of course works really well for the songs it does have.

Tim Cook: iPhone 5c popular among first-time iPhone buyers, but not as popular as expected

- 9to5mac.com

During today’s earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook noted that the iPhone 5c was the most popular choice among new iPhone users. However, the colorful new lower-end device did not meet the company’s expectations in sales. Despite the fact that iPhone 5s sales came in above Apple’s target, the iPhone category overall significantly missed analysts’ projected sales mark of 55 million units.

It’s likely that Apple misjudged the low-end smartphone market here, believing that users would jump at the chance for a “new” iPhone at a lower price than usual. Smartphone shoppers don’t seem to be taking the bait, instead opting for the more expensive, more “premium” 5s or going elsewhere. It’s hard to say they’re making the wrong call, considering that the iPhone 5c is actually much closer in specs to the previous generation than it is to the latest model, which seems to be more than worth its $100 premium.

Russia’s second largest carrier announces iPhone deal with Apple

Megafon, Russian’s second largest carrier, previously lacked a deal with Apple to purchase iPhones directly from the company since 2009, and relied on other distributors for supplies.

Notably, Apple launched its official online store in Russia last year increasing its presence in the region after historically having difficulties in the region.

KGI predicts Samsung Galaxy S5 specs, including 5.2-inch display and fingerprint sensor

KGI predicts Samsung Galaxy S5 specs, including 5.2-inch display and fingerprint sensor

- 9to5mac.com

KGI Research has issued its predictions for Samsung’s next flagship Galaxy device. The document suggests that the phone will be available in two different configurations. The standard version will come equipped with 2 GB of RAM, a quad-core Qualcomm MS M 8974AC or 8-core Samsung Exynos 5422 processor, 2 GB of RAM, a 2 MP front-facing camera, a 16 MP rear camera, and a massive 5.2-inch full HD AMOLED display.

A second, “prime” configuration will feature an upgraded 8-core Samsung Exynos 5430 processor, a quad-HD AMOLED panel, and 3 GB of memory. The other components will be the same between devices.

The big story here, however, is the inclusion of a fingerprint scanner no doubt designed to rival the Touch ID sensor found in Apple’s iPhone 5s.  The document also indicates that the phone will have “3D gesture support,” which we suspect may point to an expansion of the existing air-gesture system.Filed under: Tech Industry For more information about Tech Industry continue reading at 9to5Mac.What do you think? Apple Is Already Way Ahead In Mobile Payments

Apple Is Already Way Ahead In Mobile Payments

- cultofmac.com

smartphone 1390694647 151401660

Pundits (including me) have been predicting Apple’s entry into the mobile payment space — using a smartphone instead of a credit card to buy stuff in the real world — for years.

It hasn’t been a hard prediction to make. The financial rewards are enormous, and Apple has filed multiple patents around mobile payments over the years.

Now, it’s finally happening. And although Apple hasn’t really started yet, they’re already way, way ahead of just about every other player.

The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, Eddy Cue, “has met with industry executives to discuss Apple’s interest in handling payments for physical goods and services on its devices, according to people familiar with the situation.”

The paper also said that online store boss Jennifer Bailey has been re-assigned to a new role where she’s tasked with growing a payment service at Apple.

The move would pit Apple in direct competition with PayPal, Square, Stripe, Google, Amazon, MasterCard and many others.

In an open letter to Apple shareholders this week, investor Carl Icahn wrote: “Apple could introduce a next generation payments solution.”

Why Apple Is Getting Into the Mobile Payments Racket

Americans alone ran about $2.4 trillion dollars — that’s trillion with a t — through their credit cards in 2012, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Yet credit cards are dumb. They’re insecure, easy to hack or steal. Think of that stack of credit cards in your wallet as separate memory cards for each of your bank accounts — memory cards that you can’t view or do anything with direction because there’s no user interface.

Financial companies may like credit and debit cards because there’s opportunity in their obsolescence. You can’t see your balance on your debit card, so it’s easy to go past the limit. And when you do, Wells Fargo charges you $35. It’s a great business.

Mobile phones are a much better way to pay for things, at least for consumers. Mobile payments can and should be more secure than credit cards, as well as easy to use and powerful because you can use apps to manage the data.

By processing mobile payments data, Apple can skim pennies from many billions of dollars in transactions every year while simultaneously giving iPhone users a better experience around buying stuff.

Apple would be stupid to not get into this business. And they’re not stupid.

Why Apple Is Way Ahead

If they haven’t started yet, how can Apple be way ahead? I’m glad you asked! The fact is that they started long ago and have been working toward this outcome for years.

Here are the mobile payments assets that Apple already has in place:

Your credit card. Apple has on file the current credit cards of most iTunes users. Apple claimed last year to have 575 million registered iTunes users.

Your trust and habit. Of course, lots of companies have your credit card somewhere on file. But only a few have established a trust and familiarity and habit of use. Amazon is probably #1 in this regard, at least in the United States. People one-click order on Amazon like it’s a bodily function. But Apple is way up there, too. Just think about how many individual purchases for digital goods you’ve made through iTunes by simply entering in your password on an iPhone.

More cash registers. In a mobile payments world, the phone is the cash register. Once Apple throws that big switch in Cupertino and enables mobile payments on every iPhone, Apple will suddenly become the world’s largest cash register company. There are more than 300 million iPhones currently in use.

Global reach. Google’s Wallet Card, Coin, Square and Amazon are all essentially US-only services. Apple’s iTunes purchasing is global.

Universal wireless. Apple has built Bluetooth 4.0 (a.k.a. Bluetooth Smart or Bluetooth Low Energy) into every iPhone since the iPhone 4S.

The leading indoor location system. Apple’s Bluetooth 4.0-dependent iBeacon system is spreading like a virus around retail and other locations around the United States. Indoor location will be the platform through which Apple will most likely focus its mobile payments system. Walk into a store. Get a coupon for the item on the shelf you’re standing in front of. Press a button. Now you own it. The receipt is in your email. Have a nice day.

Authentication. Apple’s iPhone 5S phones have fingerprint readers, which will be handy for authenticating purchases in a way that’s better than a signature on a credit card slip.

In fact, the only thing missing from Apple’s mobile payments system is the easiest part — buy-in from the financial companies and point-of-sale platforms that handle payments in retail settings.

It’s an easy sell for Apple: “Hi. We have 300 million customers who could buy things through your system using their iPhones if you sign this agreement. Do you want some of their money or do you want your competitors to get it all?”

Forget about it. Apple is in an incredible position to completely dominate mobile payments in the United States and in other markets around the world.

iPhone users: Get ready to say good-bye to your wallet. It looks like Apple’s mobile payments system is finally going to happen .

While everyone is looking back, the analysts look forward to Monday’s Mac numbers

- 9to5mac.com

While there’s plenty of looking back going on today, Fortune has gathered together analyst forecasts of the Mac numbers we can expect Apple to reveal at its earnings call on Monday. This follows earlier forecasts for iPhone and iPad.

The average prediction is for 13 percent year-on-year growth, predicting that Apple sold 4.6 million Macs in the final quarter of 2013 (Apple’s fiscal Q1). This is slap bang in the middle of the growth predictions for iPads (10 percent) and iPhones (16 percent) …

The pros and independents are remarkably aligned, with just a 50,000 unit difference between their estimates.

If the forecasts are correct, it will be an impressive performance at a time when computers are being eclipsed by tablets. The numbers are also unlikely to include many Mac Pros – while it was technically launched in 2013, it wasn’t actually available until well into this year.

Although the Mac is now the poor relation, well behind both iPhone and iPad in its financial importance, it still accounts for around an eighth of Apple’s revenues.

As ever, if you want to track how well the individual analysts did, Fortune has the full table of their predictions.

Keynote for iOS also gained new transitions, a remote feature for controlling the Mac version, and more.

Keynote for iOS

• New transitions including Droplet and Grid

• Enhanced presenter display options

• Share password-protected documents via iCloud link

• Custom number formats in charts are preserved on import of Keynote ’09 and Microsoft PowerPoint presentations

iDevices top data usage charts, iPhone 5s downloading 41 percent more data than Samsung S4

- 9to5mac.com

While Android devices have the greatest market share, the evidence that iOS users do more with their devices continues to grow. The latest survey by analytics company Arieso found that iDevices took six out of the top ten slots in terms of the amount of data downloaded by 2013 devices. All numbers use the iPhone 3G as their base, and exclude the iPad Air which was launched after the survey ended.

Unsurprisingly, the company found that our appetite for data grows with each generation of device, as they become increasingly capable. iPhone 5s owners, for example, download 19 percent more data than iPhone 5 owners.

But tellingly, iPhone 5s owners download 41 percent more data than the Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung’s current flagship handset (a figure that increases to 54 percent in developing markets). A previous study showed that iPhone users spend more time using their phones than do Android owners.

In a separate analysis by the UK consumer association Which?, the iPhone 5c was found to have the greatest amount of usable storage space after built-in apps were accounted for. Comparing the 16GB models of eight leading smartphones, the 5c was found to leave users with 12.6GB of storage, with the 5s at 12.2GB taking third place behind the Nexus 5. The Samsung Galaxy S4 took bottom place, with just over half of its 16GB space available to the user.

Analysts estimate iPad sales up 10 percent year-on-year, to 25M last quarter

- 9to5mac.com

A couple of days after Fortune did its roundup of analyst estimates of iPhone sales, it has now done the same for the iPad, with the average forecast coming out at 25M sales in the final quarter of last year (Apple fiscal Q1) – up 10 percent from the previous year.

iPads were a more challenging market to forecast, observes Fortune‘s Philip Elmer-Dewitt:

The iPad Air didn’t ship until Nov. 1, missing one third of the quarter; the new iPad Mini (with Retina display) showed up 12 days later and was in short supply all the way through Christmas …

The full story of the success of the new iPad Mini in particular will likely not be known until the end of the next quarter.

A CIRP survey suggested that the new iPads were selling well, with the iPad Air and Retina iPad Mini between them accounting for 57 percent of all iPad sales. Analytics data released a few days after the iPad Air went on sale suggested that early usage was outpacing previous models four-to-one.

If you want to see how the individual analysts did, here’s your cut-out-and-keep guide ready for Apple’s earnings call on Monday. We’ll of course be providing a live blog.

Is the Nest Protect fire alarm giving users false alarms?

- 9to5mac.com

Late last September it was rumored that a smart smoke/carbon monoxide detector would join the now Google-owned Nest line of smart thermostats and was later announced in early October to a great response.

The Nest Protect, which retails for $129 in both a wired and battery powered variant, intelligently interacts with an iPhone app called Nest Home with warnings about low batteries (if applicable) and when alarms are active or about to be active. It also features a handy dismissal gesture for silencing a screaming alarm.

Some users, however, are reporting a number of unprompted false alarms unrelated to cooking or other reasonable instances. One user even reported the alarm stubbornly going off for 30 minutes in the middle of the night with no sign of smoke and ignoring prompts to dismiss the alarm after an apparent glitch in the device…

Several users have echoed a similar experience on a Nest Community support thread reporting cases where the Nest Protect hardware had to be replaced to resolve the issue with startling false alarms. Customers on Amazon have also reported false alarms with Nest Protect hardware.

Such an occurrence could be very inconvenient, especially if the Nest Protect were to warn you of smoke or carbon monoxide presence via its app while you’re away from the home.

After two weeks of using the Protect, just before bed when the system did its nightly self-check, I heard a voice that said something to the extent that the unit had failed and it needed to be replaced. Shortly after the warning, the device started to chirp and I received a notice on my iPhone about the unit failing. It’s pretty easy to silence a false alarm, but the chirp because of a failed device cannot be silenced and it happened right before bed.

For its part, Nest has been readily replacing reportedly defective units for customers after reports of such issues suggesting it could be a hardware related issue (as a software issue would surely exhibit the same behavior), and it’s often expected that first rounds of products offer bugs and kinks. What’s not expected for users is a product designed to remove friction from a classic appliance to add more frustration on its own.

1 of my 4 Nest protect units had a false alarm last night. A little before midnight, all 4 units beeped and loudly announced “There is smoke in the entryway”. The family got out of the house and I tried to find the source of the smoke. There was none. I brought everyone back in, scared, as the alarm continued and attempted to wave the alarm off. No response. I finally got a broom out, just like the commercial and pressed the button. “This alarm cannot be silenced”.

We’ve reached out to Nest for comment on the reports of false alarms experienced by customers and will update if we hear a response.

Could a firmware update resolve the issue for existing users? Have you experienced any false alarms yourself? Kickstarter: Paradock dual-dock concept for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices

- 9to5mac.com

A new Kickstarter campaign launched today to fund the Paradock, a new type of dock that can support multiple devices simultaneously, with or without cases.

The Paradock is made up of four parts. The largest part is the body, which houses everything. Any charging cable can be fed through the bottom of the body to the device, allowing compatibility with just about any mobile device, from iPhones and iPads to a variety of Android devices. The four main parts of the dock are held together magnetically for easy disassembly.

The front of the Paradock rotates to allow for landscape or portrait usage, and the heavy base allows the device to easily disconnect. The front also contains an acoustic amplifier to boost the volume of music and phone calls. There’s also a dual version that has a second dock on top of the body. The second dock is perfect for charging a tablet while your phone occupies the front slot. Like the front dock, the rear dock works with any charging cable.

The Paradock’s creator is looking for $27,000 to fully fund the production of the docks by February 7th.Filed under: AAPL Company Continue reading more about AAPL Company at 9to5Mac.What do you think?
