I gave up on buying FitBits after my second $100 device dropped from my pocket and ended up who knows where. So I was interested in yesterday’s update to the iOS app which lets you track your steps using just the app and the iPhone 5S’s M7 MoCoPro.

But apparently this tracking doesn’t offer the full FitBit kit and caboodle, eliminating the useful functionality of recording individual activities. Thankfully, another app just added these features. It’s called StepTracker, and it’s free.

Tweetbot for iPhone adds support for viewing photos in direct messages

- 9to5mac.com

Tweetbot for iPhone was updated today to add support for viewing photos send via the service’s direct messaging feature. Tweetbot is one of the first third-party apps for iOS to support the photo feature, which was introduced in the official Twitter client earlier this month.

Unfortunately Twitter does not allow third-party clients to send photos in direct messages, so you’ll still have to use the official Twitter app to send them. The update also includes miscellaneous bug fixes.

You can grab Tweetbot for iPhone for $4.99 on the iPhone App Store.

Nokia: ‘HERE’ iOS Maps app removed due to iOS 7 changes that “harm the user experience”

- 9to5mac.com

If you were wondering why Nokia’s HERE maps app for iOS disappeared from the App Store earlier this month, today the company has issued an official statement on the situation. While citing issues with iOS 7 that “harm the user experience,” Nokia unfortunately does not go into detail about specific problems with the development of the app for Apple’s latest version of iOS. It does, however, point users to the official web app, which is essentially the same experience the company wrapped into the iOS app minus many of the bugs users reported with the release of an iOS 7 update. No word on if Nokia will bring back the native app at any point, but for now we get the following statement issued to the TheIndianExpress (via Engadget):

“We have made the decision to remove our HERE Maps app from the Apple App Store because recent changes to iOS 7 harm the user experience. iPhone users can continue to use the mobile web version of HERE Maps under m.here.com., offering them core location needs, such as search, routing, orientation, transit information and more, all completely free of charge.”Filed under: Apps Tagged: app, App Store, HERE, iOS, iOS 7, maps, Nokia, removed, statement For more information about Apps, iOS, and App Store continue reading at 9to5Mac.What do you think? Apple fined $670k by Taiwan Fair Trade Commission over iPhone plan pricing

- 9to5mac.com

The Wall Street Journal reports that Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission has fined Apple approximately US$670,000 for its attempts to influence phone pricing set by distributors and service providers in the region. According to a statement from the commission, Apple was forcing at least three carriers to submit pricing plans for iPhon ahead of offering the devices for sale:

“Through the email correspondence between Apple and these three telecom companies we discovered the companies submit their pricing plans to Apple to be approved or confirmed before the products hit the market,” it said in a statement.

The report adds that Apple could face an additional fine of NT$50 million (around $1.7 million US) if it doesn’t change its current methods of negotiating iPhone pricing plans with carriers:

It found the Cupertino-based company violated article 18 of Taiwan’s Fair Trade Act by telling Taiwan’s three main service providers how much to sell iPhones for. Apple also asked Chunghwa Telecom Co., Far Eastone Telecommunication Co. and Taiwan Mobile Co. to adjust rates.

The U.S. computer company has no right to meddle in companies’ iPhone pricing plans after selling them distribution rights, the commission said. The three carriers can distribute or resell iPhones at their complete discretion after paying Apple for those rights, the commission added.

Apple will have the opportunity to appeal the ruling, but that could leave it subject to the additional $1.7 million in fines if it decides not to comply with the commission’s request.Filed under: AAPL Company, iOS Devices Tagged: carriers, fair trade commission, fine, iPhone, plan, pricing, Taiwan Visit 9to5Mac to find more special coverage of AAPL Company, iOS Devices, and iPhone. What do you think? How to Make the Switch from Android to iOS

- gizmodo.com

iphone 3 1387981904 1531279549 S

Android is a fine OS, but the lure of a new iPhone may be too much to resist. If you"re going to make the switch, you won"t want to leave any scrap of your precious mobile identity in Android"s cold robotic embrace. Here"s how to pack up everything you"ll need to bring to your new life in Apple"s walled garden.

Contacts and Calendars

There are two ways to get your contacts and calendar dates from Android onto iOS. The exact method depends on how you store the info on an Android phone.

If your local data is synchronized online with a Google account:

1. On your iPhone select Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

2. Set up a new "Microsoft Exchange" account (yes, even if you"re trying to import from Gmail).

3. Input your email address and login info. Enter a domain if you have one for an actual ME server; Gmail users can leave it blank.

4. Select "Server," then either input the ME server address or "m.google.com" for Gmail.

5. On the final screen, select what you want to import—Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and/or Reminders—then hit Accept.

If your contact information lives in the Android phone"s local memory:

1. Open the Contacts app on your Android, tap the menu key and select Import/Export.

2. Select the option to "Export to SD Card" (it should save as 00001.vcf by default).

3. Connect the SD card to your PC (either via the phone, through a USB cable, or with a card reader). Copy the .vcf file from the SD card onto your desktop.

4. Log in to your Gmail account and select Contacts from the drop down menu in the upper left corner of the screen. Choose Import from the More Actions menu bar. Select the .vcf file and import it.

5. With your contacts online, you can import them onto the iPhone. Follow the steps above.

All Your Media

You"ve got a couple options here. If you want to just move your photos and videos wholesale from Android to iPhone, iTunes is the way to go:

1. Plug the Android device into your PC and Sync it with Outlook or Exchange.

2. Unplug the Android phone, and connect the iPhone either through a USB or over Wi-Fi. Launch iTunes.

3. Select "Sync with iPhone." Choose what you want imported onto the phone—Applications, Audio content, Bookmarks, Books, Contacts, Calendars, Movies and TV shows, Photos, Notes, Documents (File Sharing apps only), and Ringtones—and then let iTunes do its thing.

If you already keep a lot of your data in the cloud, your best bet is to leave it there. For storage lockers like Evernote, Amazon Cloud Player, and Dropbox, simply download the iOS version of the app. That data should sync automatically.

If you use Google Play, which Apple only partly supports on iOS, you may be out of luck—especially if you don"t want to pay for a service you previously got for free. You can always just manually load music onto your iPhone using iTunes. Download the Spotify app and listen to that while you get organized.

Apps

The biggest sticking point when migrating from one OS to another is reassembling your app collection. You should be able to duplicate many popular Android programs on the App Store—Instagram, Foursquare, Uber, Seamless and the like. But what do you do when you want to re-download your copy of NBA Jam, and EA asks for another five boomshakalakan bucks?

You politely ask them to comp it.

Call or email to their customer service center to explain your position, highlighting the fact that you already paid for the Android version and are simply migrating operating systems. You want to continue using their excellent product, and you don"t want to be stopped by the small matter of a few dollars. If you ask nicely enough, you"ve got a good chance. But don"t be surprised if they scoff at you for requesting a 99-cent handout, since you were able to come up with $200 to spend on that shiny new phone.

Everything You Need to Master Your New Smartphone

- gizmodo.com

iphone 3 1387981905 782080508 S

Welcome to our annual New Smartphone Set Up Guide. Someone thought enough of you to help replace that dumb ol" brick you"ve been lugging around these past few years. Now what?

Getting Started

Out of the box, most smartphones aren"t all that smart. In fact, many can be downright idiotic. Prepping your new pocket ‘puter means some hand-holding, which also means slogging through a checklist of occasionally tedious (but necessary) steps. Don"t worry, we"re here to help. Remember, this device will be your constant companion for the next year or two. So you"ll want to start the relationship off right.

Keep the Battery on Its Toes

Regardless of the specific smartphone you received for the holidays, the weakest link is likely its battery. Treating your Li-ion with respect will not only extend the life and usefulness of your new phone, but also boost its resale value—just in case you decide to dump to back on the market prematurely. Once you know what you"re doing, it"s easy. In short: you want to keep that battery cool and avoid going from 100 to 0 on a regular basis. That does a lot on its own, and if you really want to be careful, there"s more you can do too.

Cydia app for jailbroken devices updated with iOS 7 look and feel

- 9to5mac.com

Jailbreaking may be for those who want the freedom to step outside of what Apple has decided iOS devices should do, but even jailbreakers are not immune to the influence of the company’s design guidelines, it seems.

The Cydia app, which allows users of jailbroken iPhones and iPads to install software not available on the App Store, has been updated with a flat look, bright colors and translucent overlays in line with iOS 7. This follows the surprise release of an iOS 7-compatible untethered jailbreak by the Evasi0n team.

There’s perhaps a small amount of rebellion in the fact that the app’s icon has not yet been updated to an iOS 7 look.

A thank-you for help with the new look was tweeted by @saurik. Video of the new app below the break …

The Craziest Rumors Of 2013 [Roundup]

Apple is by far the most secretive company in tech, so predicting its next move or the specifics of its next big thing is incredibly difficult. No one in Cupertino will leak this kind of information, so analysts and investors are forced to look a little further afield for scraps.

They usually turn to Apple’s supply chain — the people who are in some way involved with the production of its upcoming products. Sometimes this yields successful results, but other times, it results in some pretty crazy rumors.

Like every other year, there have been many memorable ones throughout 2013, so we thought it might be fun to look back at some of them. Here’s our roundup of the craziest Apple rumors from the last 12 months.

Veteran Apple ad man Ken Segall praises holiday ad – says Apple still thinking differently

- 9to5mac.com

Ken Segall, the ad exec behind Apple’s Think Different campaign, and the man who put the i into iMac, has praised Apple’s new holiday ad, saying that it shows Apple is still thinking differently.

This ad is a holiday card from Cupertino. It lines up perfectly with the values Apple has communicated for years. It’s not about technology — it’s about quality of life.

The takeaway is much the same as one gets from the “Designed by Apple in California” ad, but I like it a hundred times more. In that previous effort, Apple simply told us why it is different. This new spot tells an interesting story and lets us draw that conclusion for ourselves. It’s a more artful, more memorable way to make the point.

Once again, Apple demonstrates it’s a different kind of technology company. Most talk about what goes into their phones — Apple shows what we can get out of them …

Segall dismissed critics of the ad, saying that they are missing the point. Sure, the opening seems depressing, with a kid more interested in his iPhone and his family, but that’s the necessary setup for the payoff, which is giving his family a gift that will be remembered forever.

Segall worked closely alongside Steve Jobs for more than a decade, and wrote the book Insanely Simple: The Obsession That Drives Apple’s Success.

Tim Cook tells employees Apple has ‘big plans’ for 2014 that ‘customers are going to love’

- 9to5mac.com

This morning, Apple CEO Tim Cook sent a lengthy memo to employees as a reflection of the soon-ending 2013 and the upcoming year of 2014, according to multiple sources. In the letter, Tim Cook discusses people experiencing Apple products this holiday season, the Apple products launched throughout 2013, and corporate initiatives. “This holiday season, tens of millions of people around the world, from all walks of life, are experiencing Apple products for the first time. Those moments of surprise and delight are magical, and they’re all made possible by your hard work,” Cook says in the beginning of the email.

Cook notes Apple’s new manufacturing process for the Assembled in the USA Mac Pro and calls iOS 7 an “extraordinarily ambitious project.” “We extended our lead in the smartphone market with iPhone 5s; launched iOS 7, an extraordinarily ambitious project; released OS X Mavericks for free to our customers; introduced the iPad Air and the iPad mini with Retina display; and this week began shipping the Mac Pro from a manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas,” Cook told employees. Cook also notes his pride over Apple reaching 50 billion App Store app downloads this year. Apple reached this milestone in approximately five years…

Review: Nike+ FuelBand SE, a smart fitness band that encourages you to get active

- 9to5mac.com

Nike’s fitness band, the FuelBand came out in February of 2012. The Nike+ FuelBand SE, the newest model of the fitness device, was released last month. Since it relies on Bluetooth LE, the Nike+ FuelBand SE is compatible with the iPhone 4S and later, as well as the fifth generation iPod Touch. Bluetooth LE allows the band to automatically connect with the Nike+ FuelBand App. The new FuelBand has been designed to be more accurate and more water-resistant.

I have been using the Nike+ FuelBand SE for a little over a month, going through two defective units (one with a broken clasp, and one with a faulty battery and accelerometer) and finally stuck with the third band (which had a sticky button) for the purpose of this review.

New Shazam Update Means It’s Able To Identify Music And TV Without You Asking

- cultofmac.com

iphones online 1387528311 985999147

Shazam has been a favorite iOS app of mine for years. Have you ever been out and about, heard a song, and wondered what it was? That’s what Shazam is for. It’s always felt like magic to me, and the app’s developers have even added the ability to identify TV shows.

The most recent update to Shazam adds a feature I’m not sure I like, the ability to listen and identify music/TV without the user asking. In the past, you’ve always had to tap the button in the center of the screen, but now an auto switch makes it possible for the app to be listening in the background even when it’s not open or the iPhone is locked.

Turning auto listen on consumes 6-10% of your iPhone’s battery life per hour, according to GigaOm. The app intelligently turns itself off completely after an hour of not being opened. I suppose you could use a feature like this to identify a movie soundtrack or a playlist at your favorite coffee shop. But if you’re watching a movie can’t you just look the soundtrack up yourself?

Shazam’s auto-tagging feature is available now as a free update in the App Store.

Yahoo Weather goes universal, brings same award-winning design to the iPad

At WWDC, Yahoo received an Apple Design Award for Yahoo Weather. This coincided with the unveiling of iOS 7 and its Weather app, which displayed striking similarities to Yahoo’s effort.

With the latest update to the app, Yahoo has brought the same award-winning design to the iPad. The full-bleed imagery from Flickr really shines on a larger display. The layout for iPad is largely a port of the iPhone design with upgraded icons and assets but refinements have been made for the iPad where necessary. For example, forecast information can be much larger because of the additional real-estate.
