Apple constructing outdoor building next to Yerba Buena, likely demo area for Watch event on March 9th

Apple constructing outdoor building next to Yerba Buena, likely demo area for Watch event on March 9th

- 9to5mac.com

We have received images of a white building under construction behind the Yerba Buena Center of the Arts, the venue for Apple’s ‘Spring Forward’ event on March 9th. The tipster said that security guards are patrolling the scene, wearing ‘Apple Security’ shirts, confirming the connection between the building and Apple.

Apple built a similar external structure for the Apple Watch’s original unveiling in September, which acted as a demo hall for the products (iPhone 6 and Apple Watch) that Apple had announced at the event prior. Given the similarities, it is likely that this is the purpose of this new building as well.

It is worth noting, however, that in the past Apple has simply used side rooms inside Yerba Buena for its demo areas. Unlike the Flint Center, previous events show that there is space for indoor demos if Apple wanted to use it.

More images after the break …

The Golden Age of Jailbreaking Is Over + MORE

The Golden Age of Jailbreaking Is Over

- gizmodo.com

The Golden Age of Jailbreaking Is Over

Your smartphone may be as powerful as a computer, but it"s also hobbled. You can only install apps on it from the walled garden of the official app store. Your options are limited to the small, vetted collection of "approved" apps as opposed to the unlimited options available for PCs. That"s where jailbreaking comes in.

Let"s face it — your phone wants to limit your freedom. iOS limits third-party applications, and Android disables them by default. But you can remove these restrictions by using a few creative hacks to root your Android phone, or jailbreak your iDevice. Now you"re free to explore a wide-open (but sometimes dangerous) world of fantastic apps that Apple, Android and their network providers don"t allow. And that"s still true.

But as mobile operating systems grow up, the risks are eclipsing the benefits for the average user. As mobile OSes become more usable, full of all the features you want, jailbreaking has become something that"s largely helpful for power users and developers. Most consumers no longer need to jailbreak their phones just to have a decent experience.

Smartphones have never been a bigger target for malware

In fact, when typical users jailbreak their phones, they may be opening themselves up to problems they can"t handle. According to security firm Sophos, the explosion in smartphone malware followed the same pattern as the explosion of PC malware, but sped the hell up. Smartphones reached higher levels of malware infection in 18 months than PCs achieved in 15 years.

The varieties of phone malware include SMS trojans that text at premium rates without your knowledge, or iOS-centric malware that sniffs for your Apple ID and passwords, and Android apps that use root access to install malicious code. When you leave the walled garden of apps that Google or Apple put in place to prevent malware, you could be opening yourself up to more dangers (admittedly, malware has appeared in app stores too).

Learn How The Iphone Can Work For You

There are good and cons to owning the iphone. The phone can be absolutely mind boggling.

Rice helps to reduce the moisture on your iPhone. You should of course avoid dropping your iPhone in water. Rather than trying to dry out your device with a blow dryer, wipe the outside with an absorbent cloth, and place the phone into a bowl or bag filled with dry rice. Allow the phone to dry overnight or as long as possible.

‘Modern Family’ producers reveal how they filmed an entire episode with iPhones and MacBooks

- 9to5mac.com

Last week it was announced that an upcoming episode of the ABC sitcom Modern Family had been filmed using only iOS devices, and the entire story would play out on the screen of a MacBook. Today the producers of the show provided BuzzFeed with a look at how the episode was shot.

In order to make it look like the actors were actually holding the devices—without actually handing them iPhones, which they would then misplace—the crew decided to have a cameraman manage the phone, while cast members kept one hand on the cameraman’s at all times to create the illusion that the phone was actually in their own hands.

Executive producer Steve Levitan also revealed in the segment that the show has previously worked iPhone footage into its episodes, usually in the absence of an actual TV camera. It seem the best camera really is the one you have with you.

Opinion: Should Apple improve iPhone battery life, or just battery cases?

- 9to5mac.com

As this photo of the original Mophie Juice Pack and Tylt’s Energi for iPhone 6 shows, iPhone battery cases haven’t changed much over the years. They’ve existed for almost as long as iPhones, and remained ubiquitous due to Apple’s continued focus on thinness over longevity. That hasn’t been great for consumers: as 9to5’s Seth Weintraub put it, people are more impacted by their phones’ battery life than an extra 2mm of thinness.

It took until 2014 for Apple to offer one iPhone model — the iPhone 6 Plus — with all-day battery life, though you have to be willing to accept a much larger footprint to get that. By comparison, the smaller and reportedly more popular iPhone 6 improved only around 7% upon the iPhone 5s in run time, so the typical iPhone user isn’t seeing much of an improvement over prior models.

With a variety of alternatives at Apple’s disposal, including some major chip improvements that are just around the corner, we wanted to pose two questions to our readership. Should Apple take a break from slimming down iPhones to focus on improving battery life? Or should it instead focus its efforts on making battery cases better? Read on for our thoughts, and share yours in the comments section below…

Apple said to be considering deal with Japan Display to help finance new factory

- 9to5mac.com

A new report claims that Apple is in talks with Japan Display to help finance an LCD display factory in Ishikawa next year. The exact details of the agreement are still in flux, but Apple is said to be considering an investment of somewhere around 200 billion yen (or just under $1.7 billion).

The factory would churn out the same types of low-temperature polycrystalline silicon displays that are currently used in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Japanese news sources also say the factory could eventually be repurposed to build OLED panels like those found in the Apple Watch—and possibly in future iPhones. The factory’s output wouldn’t be exclusive to Apple’s devices, however, as the deal currently allows JDI to sell its wares to competitors.

Dropbox gets more powerful on iOS 8 with new sharing extension

- 9to5mac.com

Dropbox for iPhone and iPad users is getting a lot more powerful today as the latest version includes a new action extension for iOS 8. This allows you to save information from various apps to Dropbox on iOS without having to open the cloud-syncing app.

For example, you can send photos directly to Dropbox from the iOS Photos app making uploading images to the cloud service much easier than before. You can also use the new action extension to save text files to Dropbox but entries you create in the iOS Notes app. For files you come across on the web like PDFs from websites, the “Open In…” action will now include Dropbox as well creating a more desktop-like experience.

To take advantage of the new action extension for iOS 8, make sure you have the latest version of Dropbox installed, version 3.7, and activate the action extension.

To make the process easy, open an image in the Photos app and tap the share button (an upward arrow) then scroll to the far right of the bottom row of gray actions. Next, tap more (…) and look for “Save to Dropbox” as an activity. Toggle the switch on and drag the action to where you would like to save it.

The iOS 8 Dropbox share extension should now appear in any app that Dropbox supports including Photos, Notes, files in Safari, and more. In addition to the new share extension, Dropbox already supports a number of other iOS 8-specific features including Touch ID authenticating and iCloud Drive.

Please, Apple--Anyone--Fix My Shitty

The last time I was in a nice new car, the in-car display tried to take us to an incorrect address 40 miles away. It took fifteen minutes to enter a new address. It tried to make a call accidentally. The state of the "smart" car is horrendous—like, bad infomercial horrendous—and it"s time for someone to fix it.

Yesterday evening, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple is working on a secret project called Titan to develop "an Apple-branded electric vehicle." Then, this morning, Reuters followed it up with a report saying that Titan is a self-driving car—a software-focused system that will aim to win the autonomous vehicle wars.

Whether or not Apple"s car will be driven by a human or Siri (and whether or not it even makes it to market), one thing is very clear: In-car display technology is a problem that needs to be fixed. It"s not that conventional automakers aren"t building technology into their cars. It"s that they"re doing a horrible job.

Apple hires head of Mercedes-Benz R&D, other auto experts for new secret research lab

- 9to5mac.com

Apple has hired former president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Research & Development Johann Jungwirth to join the company as Director of Mac Systems Engineering. The hire was confirmed by Jungwirth’s LinkedIn page, and first noted by a report in the Financial Times detailing Apple’s recent hires in the automotive industry and secretive new automotive research lab.

The report claims Apple’s automotive hires are for a new research lab where “experienced managers from its iPhone unit, are researching automotive products.”

The Apple research lab was set up late last year, not long after Apple unveiled its forthcoming smart watch and latest iPhones, which suggests that any resulting product may still be years away from release. Apple often investigates a wide range of new product areas, some of which never get released.

The hire follows much speculation on what Apple might have planned in the automotive space. Reports in recent weeks detailed an employee poaching war between Apple and Tesla and unsubstantiated reports that Apple had plans to build vehicles of its own. Apple is of course already quite involved in integrating products into vehicles, primarily through its CarPlay platform and partnerships with the majority of major car companies.

Jungwirth led Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America since March 2009 before joining Apple’s Mac team in September of last year. Doug Field, an Apple VP of Design and later Mac Hardware Engineering, notably left the company in 2013 to join Tesla.

The Financial Times mirrors other recent reports regarding Apple’s recent hires adding that “Sir Jonathan Ive’s team of Apple designers has held regular meetings with automotive executives and creators in recent months, in some cases trying to hire them.” It’s unclear whether Apple is actually pursuing an automotive venture on its own, or hiring experts to help with future Mac-based in-car computer systems.
