App Icon Sticky Notes Turn Your Whole World Into iOS You can write a mile long list of reminders on your phone, but you'll still forget them all if it's tucked away in your pocket. That's why sticky notes have yet to be replaced by deviced like the iPhone, and these app icon-themed pads seem like they're rubbing that fact in.
There are six different pads to choose from, loosely based on the icons for iOS's mail, messages, clock, contacts, calendar, and notes apps. And while they're close enough to be recognizable, they're still different enough to dodge a lawsuit from Apple. Eighteen bucks gets you all six, just keep in mind you'll definitely need a stylus to use them.

Apple release Lion/enterprise docs on its training site
Apple has added several whitepapers to its training site. All them address enterprise technologies in Lion. While many of the whitepapers have been available from Apple in the past, two of them appear to be new additions. The first of these details the use of Configuration Profiles to manage Macs running Lion as well as iOS device while the second covers 802.1X networking.
The first new whitepaper, which isn’t dated, is definitely the more interesting of the two. It discusses Mac management as an extension of mobile device management (MDM). As we reported last week, Apple appears to be positioning

Rumor: Apple working on standalone iSight camera?
The New iPad Buyers’ Guide published by iLounge this week included a piece that speculated Apple might be working on a standalone camera product. While the story discussed the possibility of Apple working on a point-and-shoot iSight camera, iLounge clearly labeled it as speculation and simultaneously noted it received a tip claiming Apple is working on the project.
Take special note of pages 152 and 153—“Making the case for a standalone iSight Camera.” I’ll share more on this topic shortly, but for now, I’ll say that this two-page spread very nearly had a different title. We were tipped that this project is actually happening at Apple right now, but we didn’t

$10,000 iPad Prototype Was ‘Most Likely’ Stolen Property, Says eBay Seller Auctioning off Apple prototypes is tricky business. If you're the seller, there's always the chance that Apple will try to shut you down, and ask for the device back. The man who was selling an iPad prototype with two dock connectors suspected this when he posted his eBay auction.

But Apple didn't contact the seller, who spoke with us on the condition of anonymity. In fact, the seller told us he expressly conducted his auction over the Memorial Day weekend because he figured Apple employees would be enjoying

Sorkin is a Hollywood mogul thanks to his numerous successes, including “The Social Network,” “Moneyball,” and “The West Wing,” but the Big Shot warned that his silver-screen version of the best-selling biography is still in its early stages.

It will certainly help keep you cool at work, but if you were hoping to fool your co-workers into thinking you've got the latest and greatest Apple hardware, think again. Not even a toddler would mistake this iPhone 'shaped' compact air conditioner for the real deal.
The on-screen icons barely match the ones in iOS, and it's not even a real LCD display. It's also monstrously thick, so what's the point of trying to impress people if they have to be complete idiots to be fooled? It will, however, definitely keep you cool. We heard rumors several times as far back as the original iPad launch that Apple was working to add a second dock connector. The rumors were supported by several patents that surfaced. They detailed possible advancements Apple could make to its dock

What Apple’s Vibrating Pen Tells Us About the Future of Everything
The site Patently Apple Wednesday posted a detailed analysis of a new Apple patent application for an iPen, a vibrating pen that makes noise.
The application describes a haptic stylus containing a tiny speaker, which is designed to be used on touch screens.
Apple watchers are scratching their heads over this one. Apple is going to sell tablets with pens like the Microsoft Tablet PC, or phones with pens like the Samsung Galaxy Note?
Not exactly.
But the iPen patent does hint at amazing and brilliant things to come — for Apple and the entire PC industry.

Apple Stores rumored carrying Nest thermostats, we play it cool (to exactly 71F) Tony Fadell might have left Apple to make the Nest Learning Thermostat, but it may be the case that Apple hasn't completely left him. If we go by a pair of rumors, Nest's Internet-savvy climate control could soon be in Apple Stores, presumably across the US, for the same $249 as it costs to splurge for one through Nest itself. We're definitely skeptical -- home appliances and automation aren't really Apple's strong suits, and Nest has already declined to comment -- but 9to5 Mac has heard that the thermostats are already in Apple's inventory system. If the reports are at all true, there won't be long to wait before you can buy a smart energy system while

InstaCRT puts all other photo filter apps to shame (video) To hell with Instagram. Seriously. It's not that we don't understand the appeal of the photo filter standard bearer, it's just that it lacks a cleverness and visceral quality that InstaCRT has in spades. See, rather than simply recreate retro effect with some software trickery, InstaCRT actually uses the aging titular tech to achieve its goals. The concept, while clever, is actually pretty simple: you take a photo on your iPhone using the InstaCRT app, it's then uploaded to the developer where all the magic happens. Your image is displayed on a tiny 1-inch CRT (harvested from an old-school VHS camcorder) in the company's office, a picture of your photo is then taken with a

Nonetheless, we're going to publish this anyway, because it's so interesting, and the source has no apparent motivation to make this up - however, he/she does have a reason to remain anonymous (i.e. staying in the good graces of Google and its Android app store staffers). Besides, we have now given the Google Android PR person we contacted about this nearly 24 hours to respond to this developer's specific complaints, after he got back to us

Is Siri a success for Apple?
Oh, Siri...Apple’s little voice-activated personal assistant in iOS can handle questions, give recommendations, and delegate requests, but does it really live up to expectations?
The folks in Cupertino like to roll out advertisements that show Siri capable of compiling individual preferences with personalized results, and even completing basic tasks like finding a nearby restaurant, but the software has met a very mixed reaction since its Beta début on the iPhone 4S in October. People who felt misled by Siri’s functionality depicted in commercials even filed a class action lawsuit Apple earlier this year.

ITC says again that Apple and RIM don't violate Kodak patent Kodak hasn't caught a break lately, and that trend isn't easing up any time soon with a second rejection arriving in its main International Trade Commission (ITC) patent dispute with Apple and RIM. Despite having had its case remanded after a loss last year, Kodak is once more being told that BlackBerrys and iPhones don't violate a patent on previewing photos. The one violation was rendered moot through "obviousness," according to administrative law judge Thomas Pender. It's still an initial ruling, and Kodak is trying to put a positive light on the situation -- it's "pleased" there's still an infringement, even if the patent

Apple Retail Stores Desperately Wanted By Cities
Apparently, Apple retail stores are like catnip (or, something stronger, no doubt) to cities across the US. According to a new report, Apple is courted by cities looking to capture the extra cash of the tragically young and hip urban consumers that Apple Stores bring to area malls everywhere.
New York City is reported to only charge Apple a fraction of the amounts other retail stores or restaurants are charged, while Salt Lake City purportedly offered five years of free rent.
The concept here is simple. Apple Stores are the ultimate in cool, offering higher-end, quality products and retail spaces to an increasing number of consumers with money they can spend. While none of the

Samsung chief says company looking to resolve differences with Apple ahead of court rendezvous, options include cross-licensing deal
The legal battle between Samsung and Apple is nothing new, as the two companies have been duking it out in court for quite sometime. Both companies are ordered to meet with each other to talk out a deal tomorrow. Not surprisingly, Samsung chief JK Shin is looking to resolve the differences between his company and Apple and is looking towards negotiating with them reports Reuters. One of the ways he suggested is a cross-licensing deal: “There is still a big gap in the patent war with Apple but we still have several negotiation options including cross-licensing.”

Samsung's mobile head JK Shin just left Seoul for the mediated discussions saying there were still "several negotiation options" on tap, including the possibility of cross-licensing patents. He warned that there was still a "big gap" between the two sides, and we'd tend to agree -- neither Apple nor Samsung is exactly backing off just yet. Why Ernest Hemingway Would Have Loved the iPad
Remember when people used to say that the iPad was a “content consumption device” useless for real “content creation”?
It’s a weird thing to say about a gadget offering a gazillion content-creation apps, but people said it. People still say it.
Pundits and writers say the iPad sucks for “real work” in general and writing in particular. I have come to believe the opposite: To me, the iPad is the best writing tool I’ve ever used.
And I think Ernest Hemingway would agree.

Apple is currently involved in an outreach program to its new neighbors in its planned ‘Campus 2′ area. This week, a brochure was mailled to residents surrounding the new campus providing new information and inviting feedback in a variety of ways. Although the project seems to be a big win for the city of Cupertino, some residents have voiced some concern about the additional traffic and other changes to the area.

This HP Touchpad Is Your Fire-Sale-Reborn Deal of the Day I'm looking for a replacement for my laptop. It's not broken, just since starting this working-online thing, I've become feeble. I need something light to carry around with me. I'd be more than happy to just leave it all up to my phone, but there's only so much typing I can do on such a tiny screen. I'm in serious need of something now. And that one company's tablet looks great, but isn't it just a little pricey? Yeah. That's right. I'm cheap. It's OK.
Thankfully, the HP TouchPad has managed to make a serious Rocky-like reemergence from a near death. And it keeps coming back for more. This little phoenix is a steal at under $200 with 32GB memory and a whole 9.7" of screen

Server app is Apple's current approach to OS X Server Installs
Apple followed up yesterday’s Mountain Lion Developer Preview update with a new seed of Mountain Lion Server. Unlike some Mount Lion preview updates, which showed up in Software Update on Macs running the previous developer previews, Apple made this update visible in the Apple Developer Center website.
Members of Apple’s developer program can login at the company’s developer site and get a redemption code for the update. That redemption code then offers up the new preview in the Mac App Store.
The difference in approach most likely relates to Apple’s repositioning of OS X Server. Beginning with Lion’s

Editorial: Thin laptops are the new mainstream, but what about battery life? Bandwagons, trains and Tranes. Can't say that these three have a heck of a lot in common in most regards, but one thing's for sure: trying to stop this trio would be a Herculean task. And so it goes with laptops -- once upon a time, it was good enough to have something that resembled a portable tower, but these days, the ability to even see the chassis at all feels like a negative. I exaggerate, of course, but the proverbial race in the laptop world is hardly about price; it's about thinness. Dubbed "Made in New York Digital Map," the service aims to make it easier for folks to see which tech companies are seeking engineers, designers, developers, etc. At the moment there's more than 325 looking for new hires, with over "thousands of jobs" being up for grabs. This Might Explain Why Your iMessages Are F*cked Up Are your special blue iMessages acting up? Do they arrive late, or maybe not at all? It looks like there's a solution—and Apple is to blame.
Brian X. Chen over at the NYT found a solution after his iMessages were vanishing into a void:
A few weeks ago, I was using Apple's iMessage messaging service on the iPhone, making plans to see a movie with a group of friends. Suddenly they stopped replying, and about an hour later I saw them check in at the movie theater on Foursquare.
This could ruin your life, digitally. But then:
The following morning my iPhone exploded with about a dozen messages from my friends discussing when and where they were meeting to see the movie.
Delay.

Two Ways To Delete Videos Directly From Your iPhone
Chances are you’re going to want to get rid of some videos on your iPhone or iPad at some point when you’re not near your trusty Mac at home. Or your laptop. In fact, you might even want to skip the computer and iTunes altogether, and just delete them from your iOS device directly because finding the white connection cord is just too much of a hassle. Today’s tip gives you two ways to do this.
One way to delete videos from your iOS device is to open up the Videos app. Once there, find the video you want to delete from the list and swipe to the left, just like you do to delete or archive email in Mail app. A red Delete button will appear to the right of the video icon.

Apple admits iCloud was hosed for 15 million users this morning, after the fact
After a number of reports and tweets from across the web claiming outages for iCloud mail this morning, Apple has updated its system status page confirming the outage lasted from 08:00-09:30 PDT and impacted approximately 12 percent, or 15 million of iCloud’s 125 million users. Unfortunately Apple’s iCloud Support page wasn’t updated until after service was restored, leaving most users in the dark as to why they couldn’t access Mail and Notes during the outage.

Time Warner Cable's CEO doesn't know what AirPlay is, hates set-top boxes While he might not be the first human to admit unfamiliarity with Apple's AirPlay, he's likely to be one of the most recognizable figures amongst the bunch. In a recent interview, Time Warner Cable's CEO, Glenn Britt, said one of the main challenges faced by digital video was the lack of simple ways to stream internet-based content to television sets. Naturally, that brought up the imminent question about Cupertino's streaming goods, to which he responded by saying "I'm not sure what AirPlay is," also adding that "the current Apple TV, the little thing, the hockey puck, really doesn't do anything to help enable you to get internet material on your TV."

I don't know what disgusts me more: the fact that a useless actor like Kutcher is playing Jobs or that they are milking Jobs figure already or that they got the characterization entirely wrong.
Actually, it's all of the above, but the last part is especially bad. I don't even care that they didn't get Jobs' signature grey New Balances right. Whatever. The really, extremely bad thing here is that you can't bloody put a 1980s Steve Jobs inside his 2000s jeans and black turtleneck uniform.
As Jobs himself would say: that sucks.

Could You Live Without Broadband at Home? (Steve Wozniak Does!) [Wireless]

Could You Live Without Broadband at Home? (Steve Wozniak Does!) Could you live without broadband at home? I don't know if I could, but Apple Co-Founder and Gizmodo hero Steve Wozniak can. That's what he has recently said in Australia talking about his home in Los Gatos, California:
I don't have broadband at my home. I, Steve Wozniak, don't have broadband at my home. I live one kilometre out of the main part of town. Broadband is a monopoly in my town—that means you can get it from a cable company, but I don't have cable.
Following a string of complaints across the globe (notably in Australia and the United Kingdom) regarding Apple’s branding of the 4G-LTE compatible iPads, Apple has tweaked the name of their cellular-connecting iPad in some regions. The new name is simply “iPad WiFi + Cellular,” and this is a shift from the former “iPad WiFi + 4G” branding. All first-generation iPad and iPad 2 models with 3G-data connections were referred to as “iPad WiFi + 3G,” and the 3G model of the 16GB iPad 2 that Apple

Thunderbolt on Windows gets hands-on, lacks Mac's hot-swapping Thunderbolt's 10-gigabit interface is only just making its way to Windows after spending more than a year as a Mac-only feature, so it's not surprising that a lot of questions surround how well the Apple- and Intel-developed connection works for those of a Microsoft persuasion. A thorough test at AnandTech of one of the first motherboards to support the spec on Windows PCs, an Ivy Bridge-ready board from MSI, has shown some positive signs along with a few flies in the high-speed ointment. The good news? Most general storage devices will work as expected with a minimum of fuss, and you can even get some features of Apple's Thunderbolt Display working if you're willing to

iOS' Reminders and Notes Apps Will Likely Appear in iCloud Considering that the Notes and Reminders apps on iOS will soon appear on OS X Mountain Lion, it probably shouldn't come as a huge shock that they'll probably be part of iCloud's suite of web apps. Today, the two utilities have popped up in screens for the beta version of iCloud, which nobody can seem to login to.
Also found was a reference to iOS 6, which probably means we'll be seeing this stuff sooner—ahem, WWDC, ahem—than later. Nothing but news about iPhone. We make sure to comb the web and get it

Does This Mysterious New Apple Icon Point To Future iCloud Developer Tools?Apple's mysterious new iCloud icon
Earlier today we showed you that Apple was working on bringing the iOS Notes and Reminders apps to iCloud.com, and Apple has since removed the evidence from beta.icloud.com. After others have dug around to see what Apple is up to with its iCloud beta URL, an interesting find shows a new iCloud developer icon.
It looks like Apple is working on new iCloud developer tools or at the very least some sort of web portal for devs to access beta iCloud features. Will we see new iCloud features at WWDC this summer?

iCloud beta website reveals plans for Notes and Reminders web apps, affirms iOS 6 beta coming soon
We know that Apple has been busy tweaking their iCloud.com website and testing new features like iOS 5-like notification banners, and now it appears that Apple is expanding the website’s web-application library. If you head to beta.icloud.com, you will see a beta-version of the iCloud.com website that includes new Reminders and Notes applications. Currently, we are unable to login, but we have been able to load the new icon grid. It is hard to tell if these new apps are something Apple trashed for the original iCloud website release or if Apple is planning on bringing them to the site. The 2012 marking on the bottom may support

iCloud.com slip-up shows Notes and Reminders, iOS 6 references Looks like Apple's going to add more than just banner notifications to iCloud.com in the near future: a randomly available beta.icloud.com page has shown Notes and Reminders alongside familiar iCloud fixtures like email and Find My iPhone. If that wasn't enough, some skulking about in the HTML code of the beta page showed for a time that access to the new features requires signing in to the "iOS 6 beta," a fairly strong indicator that a web refresh will go hand-in-hand with a new mobile platform at this year's WWDC. What else is in store will likely have to wait until the developer event next month, but we at least know now that our iPhone's grocery lists will survive

iPad-based POSLavu system saves money and streamlines restaurant management
Over the past two years, we’ve seen the iPad integrated into a number of different workplaces. While most iPad in business stories focus on the freedom that the iPad offers, the story of the iPad and iPod touch in one Brooklyn restaurant illustrates that in addition to freedom and flexibility, adopting Apple’s mobile platform can save you a lot of cold hard cash.
The Brooklyn Taphouse saved thousands of dollars by going with an iPad and iPod touch point of sale system. Rather than adopting one of the major restaurant POS systems, which can run into the tens of thousands of dollars
